Recap / Total Drama: "Haute Camp-Ture"

Go To

The show gives the final five a day off and takes a look at what the eliminated players are up to at the five-star resort they've been sent to post-elimination.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny:
    • Lindsay found Gwen's prank on Heather back in "Not Quite Famous" to be hilarious.
    • Noah found the fact that Leshawna locked Heather in the fridge back in "If You Can't Take The Heat... " to be funny, and that he'd vote for her to win if it came to that.
  • Answer Cut: Izzy wonders if, like her, sharks simply have the urge to bite something, we then cut to a shark (having a seaweed mud wrap with Beth) shrugging, not denying Izzy's claim.
  • Argument of Contradictions: Noah denies that anything eventful happened to him during his brief time on the Island, but Izzy brings up him kissing Cody's ear. After Noah and Izzy get into a "Did not/Did too" argument, Trent breaks the tie in Izzy's favor.
Noah: Did I get anything out of this experience? No. It was completely and totally uneventful.
Izzy: (pops up out of the water) He kissed a guy!
    Noah: (agitated) No, I didn't!
    Izzy: Yes, you did!
    Noah: Didn't!
    Izzy: ♪ Di-iiiiiiiiid! ♪
    Noah: Did! Not!
    Izzy: (singing) Did-did-did-did-did-did-did-did!
Trent: Ahem! Uh, I can break this tie. He totally did!
(a Flashback Cut of said incident is shown)
    Noah: I have no comment.
  • Artifact Title: The episode was originally called "Haute Camp-ture" note , and it was to feature a fashion photo shoot challenge. This idea was scrapped in favor of a "look in on the losers" story called "After the Dock of Shame". Some networks aired the episode with the original title, which doesn't fit the replacement story, and the episode is still widely known by that now-misleading original title.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: After getting hit with a coconut, Courtney bemoans the Misplaced Vegetation and complains, "If you're going to drop props on my head, can you at least make them geographically correct?!" She's immediately buried in snow, which is followed by a sled and an Eskimo.
  • Blah, Blah, Blah: Izzy doesn't care for Trent's defense that Heather tricked him into a kiss. She mocks him with a semi-Non Sequitur rant while talking with her right hand: "Yeah right, that's what they all say. My lips did what they wanted. My lips have a mind of their own. Blah blah blah blah! Fishcakes! Blah blah blah! I'm a liar! Blah blah blah!" Trent's more weirded out than offended.
  • Blatant Lies: A two-for with Noah.
    • He claims that he was a team player, although his complete lack of team spirit in "Dodgebrawl" is the reason why he was the third camper ousted.
    • He claims that nothing eventful happened to him in his short time on Total Drama Island. However, Izzy begs to differ, bringing up the ear-kissing incident with Cody, with Trent and video footage backing her up.
  • Bowdlerise: In the original version, when Courtney is beating Harold with the lamppost, Trent says, "Poor sucker." In the American version, he instead says, "Little guy."
  • Breather Episode: This episode takes a break from the fierce competition between Owen, Duncan, Gwen, Leshawna and Heather to focus on the eliminated contestants' stay at Casa De Losers, with there being little competition until the very end, when the eliminated contestants accidentally get Leshawna eliminated.
  • Brutal Honesty: Lindsay tells Courtney that even if Harold hadn't cheated her out of the game she would have just lost eventually anyway because nobody really liked her.
  • Call-Back: As a Breather Episode, the eliminated campers reflect on their performance in prior episodes.
  • Coconut Meets Cranium: A coconut hits Courtney in the head mid-rant, which prompts her to complain to the camera that coconuts aren't geographically correct props for the area of Muskoka. She gets what she wants a second later when in order a large pile of snow, a sledge, and a Native Canadian fall on top of her.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Lindsay's comments on Duncan:
Lindsay: Anyone who treats deer or trees badly, is not a friend to deer or trees.
  • Dumbass Has a Point:
    • Lindsay points out to Courtney that while she may not be "hated" by the rest of the contestants in the same way that Heather is, no one (except for Duncan, who has a crush on her) really likes her that much—so even if Harold hadn't done what he didnote , Courtney probably would've just been voted off in a later episode. Courtney's further offended when she realizes that the rest of the contestants really don't care about what happened to her, further enforcing what Lindsay said about them really not liking her all that much.
      • Later when Courtney finally finds Harold and starts laying into him, Lindsay remarks, "Glad she wasn't my CIT."
    • Sadie asks how Heather got to the finals if none of the contestants even like her. (Eva's answer is "Because she's a conniving, back-stabbing witch, that's why!")
  • Embarrassingly Painful Sunburn: Cody aims to use his time at Playa Des Losers to get a tan to make himself more attractive to women. He foregoes sunscreen to make the most of every ray of sunshine coming his way and of course ends up not with a tan, but a pink, full-body, majorly painful sunburn.
  • Everyone Can See It: Courtney talks about her crush on Duncan and how she doesn't want anyone to find out, only for everyone else to tease her about how obvious it was (with Noah pointing out that Courtney looks at Duncan the same way [Noah's] dog looks at a steak).
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Ezekiel, of all people argues to just give Courtney a break after her rant, only for Courtney to bang him on the head with her lamp post.
    • Courtney thought that Heather reading Gwen's diary in front of the entire viewing world was "uncalled for."
    • Trent slipping Harold some food. He agrees with Ezekiel that the guy's a traitor, but he says he shouldn't have to starve.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Ezekiel gives us a taste of his rapper persona that we'll see in the Action special.
    • Courtney mentions filing a lawsuit against the show for wrongful termination.
  • Funny Background Event: While Chris is introducing the episode and talking about giving the Final Five a day off, the Final Five are behind him having anything but a good day off. Leshawna runs out of her cabin to puke, Heather and Gwen flee for their lives from a bear, Owen has leeches all over him from swimming in the lake, and Duncan fishes Owen's swimwear right off of him.
  • Gilded Cage: The destination for anyone eliminated from TDI is a five-star luxury resort with all of the amenities, which is a few steps up from the Camp Wawanakwa. It doesn't fully lessen the sting of losing out on $100k, though.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Eva says she's been going to anger management and gotten a somewhat better grip on her issues, but it flares up when the subject of Heather comes up.
  • Hated by All:
    • Even when there's already a Broken Base In-Universe about who should win, everyone, with no exception, wants Heather voted off.
    • Downplayed in Courtney's case, who's not as hated as by other contestants as Heather is. However, with the exception of Duncan (who has a crush on her), none of the other contestants really like her and no one really cares that Harold had rigged the votes to get her kicked off the show. She's genuinely shocked when she finds this out from Lindsay, saying, "That is so not true! Everyone likes me! I used to be a CIT!"
  • Ignored Epiphany: Courtney is genuinely surprised to hear from Lindsay that the other campers didn't really like her. However, rather than take stock of this, she insists that, of course, everyone likes her and that she was a CIT.
  • Kidnapping Bird of Prey: While DJ and his pet bunny are relaxing in the sun, an eagle flies by and snatches up the critter. For whatever reason, the bird lets go off the bunny several meters further, which causes it to fall on the barbecue. It escapes with only an Ash Face.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Harold rigging votes against Courtney is revealed to have bitten him in the ass hard as she has been nonstop hunting him down after getting voted off in the very next episode. When she finds him in this episode, she beats him with a lamp post and wrapped it around him.
  • Loophole Abuse: Katie and Sadie are dumb enough to vote to eliminate Leshawna (as they thought it'd be fun to have her around), but since it's unlikely many others would do similarly, Chris exploits how anyone simply saying her name counts as a vote. Even the parrot counts (Twice!), despite Trent's protest.
  • Misplaced Vegetation: Courtney questions why there are palm trees in Muskoka when a coconut falls on her head. The production crew responds to her complaints that the least they can do is make their props geographically correct by dumping a pile of snow, a sled, and a Native Canadian on her.
  • Never My Fault: Downplayed. Eva is enraged about Heather's manipulations getting her voted off, which she has a right to be mad about; however, she doesn't acknowledge that it was ultimately her own inability to control her temper that got her voted off both times. The first time, she blew up after finding out her MP3 player had disappeared and destroyed both cabins while assuming one of her teammates must have stolen it; the second time, she made it very clear that she wanted to kill her former teammates who voted her off last time, which made everyone decide to vote for her again.
  • No Sympathy:
    • After Courtney finally finds Harold and lays into him, Trent and Lindsay observe this and resume sunbathing.
    • Literally no one cares about Courtney's wrongful termination from the show.
      • In the case of the contestants who got eliminated before Courtney (such as Eva and Noah), they tell her stuff along the lines of "don't know, don't care" and tell her that she should just get over it at this point.
      • Lindsay (who was eliminated after Courtney was) points out that Courtney was never really all that popular with the rest of the contestants to begin with and figures that she probably would've been voted eventually.
  • Non-Indicative Title: The story has nothing to do with fashion in any way.
  • Not in Front of the Parrot!: That's part of the reason why Leshawna was eliminated unanimously.
Parrot: Squak! Polly want a Leshawna!
  • Not So Stoic: The snarky and sarcastic Noah clearly gets defensive when Izzy brings up him accidently kissing Cody's ear in "The Big Sleep".
  • Offhand Backhand: As Lindsay goes around asking people if they are Tyler, one she asks is Eva. Eva is eating steaks at the time and in no mood to deal with such a question, so after a beat, she grabs a steak and slaps it backwards into the other girl's face. It temporarily knocks her out.
  • Oh, Crap!: The expression on Leshawna's face over being eliminated.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Noah kissing Cody's ear in his sleep. The way Noah angrily replies to Izzy for bringing it up suggests he gets reminded of it a lot.
  • Pet the Dog: Whoever arranged for the eliminated contestants to stay at a five-star hotel, especially considering all the awful things that happened to them during the competition.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the French phrase "haute couture".
  • Putting the Pee in Pool: Izzy outright announces she's putting an end to a conversation in the pool because she has to pee. To the horror of everyone she was talking to, she doesn't get out of the pool. They call her out on how gross she's being and she argues it's okay because the water is chlorinated.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Courtney hasn't taken learning about what Harold did well. It is implied that being sent to the resort allowed Courtney to see Chris's recap of the episode she was booted off and was therefore aware of Harold rigging the votes. Guess what she's been doing ever since Harold was voted off shortly afterwards...
  • Running Gag: Ezekiel tries to get closer to Bridgette, but gets caught in the process.
  • Super-Strength: Courtney first displays hers here, ripping out a lamp post and hunting Harold with it.
  • Stunned Silence: Leshawna is unable to process this after being unexpectedly and unwittingly eliminated. She keeps her shocked expression all the way to the resort.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Katie and Sadie accidentally start the process that (accidentally) gets Leshawna eliminated.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Leshawna pukes in the intro of the episode.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: This episode reveals where all of the contestants go after elimination and what they have been up to since then.
  • Wimp Fight: Courtney accidentally votes off Leshawna just by saying her name. Harold accuses her of doing it on purpose to get back at him. He pushes her, they weakly slap each other, and they both tumble into the pool.
  • Witch with a Capital "B": How Eva describes Heather.
  • Worthy Opponent: Courtney considers Heather to be one to her.
