Recap / Total Drama: "Anything Yukon Do, I Can Do Better"

Go To

The contestants must complete a challenge in the freezing Yukon territory. Team Chris Is Really Really Really Really Hot secure their first win, and Team Victory is sent to the elimination room (yet again).

Tropes:

  • A Crack in the Ice: Owen causes one on the ice bridge that Team Chris has to cross, almost letting them fall if it wasn't for Tyler.
  • Accidental Kiss: Alejandro orchestrates an accidental kiss between himself and Bridgette when they're hopping from ice floe to ice floe. Bridgette trips and falls on top of him, resulting in a kiss that gives Alejandro more influence on her. Later, under the guise of another kiss he gets Bridgette's tongue stuck to a pole, which leads to her elimination.
  • Badass Boast: Alejandro gives one after Bridgette's elimination.
Alejandro: Bridgette was expendable. They all are. Some will prove to be more challenging than others, but one by one, they'll all go down.
  • Bears Are Bad News: A Polar Bear comes close to eating Owen and Cody on an ice float.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Bridgette with her Tongue on the Flagpole, after being cued up for a song.
  • Break the Cutie: Poor Bridgette is manipulated by Alejandro into cheating on her boyfriend, gets her tongue stuck on a pole as a result, is ridiculed for kissing a pole, receives NO HELP from ANYONE, gets the blame for costing her team the challenge, and finally suffers one of the most cruelest and most humiliating eliminations ever.
  • The Cameo: Ezekiel is briefly seen when there are mice jumping out of the out-of-control Jet.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Izzy says that their "radio" was stolen, when inside a box of radioactive material.
  • Comical Nap Drool: Heather enjoys a solid nap in first class with an sleep mask and some drool slipping out of her mouth.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Chris admits that they probably should have detached Bridgette's tongue from the pole before throwing her off the plane. As a result, her parachute gets tangled up with the pole.
  • Frozen Body Fluids: During the sled-pulling challenge, DJ starts crying because the snow and ice from Yukon remind him of his mother's freezer. Because of the cold, his tears froze and he couldn't see anything, leading him to push a baby seal off a cliff. Despite not seeing anything, he still managed to cross the finish line first, but his team still lost because they left Bridgette behind.
  • "Good Luck" Gesture: While the Total Drama Jumbo Jet is seemingly at risk of crashing, Lindsay keeps her fingers crossed for that not to happen.
  • Hand Gagging: Chris puts his hand over Sierra's mouth when she reveals she's been interviewing people from his past and readies herself to spill more of his secrets in.
  • Hanging by the Fingers: The entirety of Team CIRRRRH and a loaded sledge crash through an ice bridge. All that saves them are Tyler's unusually strong fingers that grab hold of the nearby cliff's edge and the rope attached to him that the others hold onto. One by one, the rest of the team climbs back up over Tyler and let him deal with the sledge on his own.
  • High-Five Left Hanging: Team CIRRRRH wins the challenge. Izzy and Noah celebrate it with a high-five, but when Owen tries to do one with Alejandro, who doesn't like him, the latter pointedly walks away.
  • Karma Houdini: Leshawna suggests that in order to save time during the bobsled challenge that any of Team Victory's members who don't make it to the bobsled head straight for the finish line so that they don't have to keep stopping at any of the checkpoints. When they ultimately lose the challenge due to Bridgette never making it to the finish line (as her tongue was stuck to one of the checkpoints), not only is it never pointed out that they lost due to Leshawna's idea but Bridgette's the one that gets eliminated while the former isn't even in the bottom 2. Even worse, not only does Lindsay wait at a checkpoint instead of the finish line (which also doesn't get pointed out), but Leshawna herself says they're going to pick up Bridgette and then go to the finish line, meaning she ignores her own strategy. But of course, that too goes unmentioned.
  • Kick the Dog: Seeing Bridgette with her Tongue on the Flagpole, Chris decides now would be an excellent time for a song.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • When Heather says they're overdue for a rewards challenge, Noah points out there has to be at some point because there aren't enough contestants to fill out an entire season. Chris says they found that teams work harder in elimination challenges than they do during reward ones, so he says any challenge could result in elimination.
    • When Bridgette is cued up to sing, an irritated Heather admits she had thought Chris had forgotten about this aspect. Chris says that's not gonna happen because this is his favorite part.
  • Major Injury Under Reaction: Izzy doesn't seem too bothered about being exposed to a high dosage of radioactive material.
  • Nature Tinkling: Owen relieves himself in an icy river, partly because he has to, partly to warm up a little. He has to go again shortly after, but his team reaches the finish line before he's forced to look for another river.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Downplayed, but it's never shown how Gwen got out of the cracking ice block and then got to the check point.
  • Plot Hole: There's no reason for Bridgette's tongue to still be stuck to the pole even after the challenge is over other than to ensure that she didn't expose Alejandro to everyone.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Before departing, Bridgette tried to warn the others about Alejandro, but because the pole was still stuck to her tongue, no one could understand her.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the song "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)" from the film Annie Get Your Gun.
  • Prayer Is a Last Resort: While the Total Drama Jumbo Jet is seemingly at risk of crashing, Bridgette holds her palms together for that not to happen.
  • Pressure Point: Both newcomers, Sierra and Alejandro, show that they know how to make a body collapse. In first class, Sierra gives Cody a non-consensual foot massage while he's asleep and when he wakes up he tells her to stop. Hearing this, Sierra ominously asks if Cody knows that there's a spot between the tarsal bones through which a person can be temporarily paralyzed. She presses her thumb into it before Cody can get his foot back. In economy class, Owen freaks out when the Total Drama Jumbo Jet seems to be crashing. Not willing to put up with it, Alejandro grabs his shoulder near his neck and squeezes. Owen goes out as a light.
  • Putting the Pee in Pool: Owen relieves himself in an icy river, partly because he has to, partly to warm up a little. Cody, who's in the water with him, is horrified and can barely outswim the yellow stain.
  • Running Gag: Lindsay forgetting Tyler's name, calling him Noah instead.
  • Seesaw Catapult: Inspired by Izzy's acrobatics, Noah jumps on the nearest ice floe and encourages Owen to follow along. However, Noah slips and slides forward over the ice floe and when Owen jumps to help him up, he launches Noah up and away back to the riverbank.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The moment in which the polar bear tries to eat Owen and Cody is based on Quint's death scene in Jaws.
    • Courtney, Heather and Gwen's dance moves during "Stuck to a Pole" come from The Breakfast Club.
    • Chef leaves a blow-up doll of himself driving the plane, referencing Otto the autopilot from Airplane!
  • Ship Tease: Noah gives Bridgette an unusually affectionate hug to keep her warm when the contestants first arrive in the Yukon.
  • Sickly Green Glow: Izzy gets a bright green glow to her after jumping into a box containing radioactive material. While her team is taken aback, Izzy feels fine and is oblivious to the danger she ought to be in. She's fine and no longer glowing next episode.
  • Slippy-Slidey Ice World: The semi-frozen river that the contestants have to cross.
  • Super-Strength: Tyler reveals that he has a crazy amount of finger strength.
Tyler: First piano lesson I had, I broke the piano. Got into sports after that.
  • Tongue on the Flagpole: Alejandro lures Bridgette in for a kiss only to get out of the way at the last second so she kisses a pole. Her tongue becomes stuck to it and Alejandro leaves with his team while Bridgette's team, due to past agreements, does not come looking for her. Team Amazon does drop by, but Chris distracts them by forcing Bridgette to sing and Team Amazon to be her backup. Even while her tongue is preoccupied, Bridgette powers through the song in hopes of getting help afterwards. However, Chris sends Team Amazon away and refuses to help Bridgette himself. Due to her absence, Team Victory loses and she's voted off. Because still no one helps her with the pole, her parachute becomes tangled around it when she's thrown out of the plane, but she does land safely in the end.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Leshawna reveals that Harold gave her his num-yos to remember him by when he volunteered for elimination.
  • Unwanted Rescue: Sierra saves Cody from drowning, accidentally injuring him in the process.
  • Whip of Dominance: Heather takes great pleasure in whipping Courtney during the sledding challenge, and is the only contestant to do so. She claims is to make Courtney run faster, but it's clear she's just enjoying humiliating her.
  • Who Is Driving?: Chef joins Chris for the elimination ceremony. When Chris asks who's driving, Chef reveals he has a dummy in place of that. Only for the plane go head into a no-fly zone when Chef isn't present.
  • You Must Be Cold: Alejandro flirts with Bridgette to sabotage Team Victory. As part of his flirting, he offers her his shirt to keep her warm in the Yukon, which has the added bonus of exposing his chiseled chest. Bridgette doesn't stand a chance.
