Recap / Total Drama: "Aftermath IV: Hawaiian Style"

Go To

The final Aftermath reveals the finale destination- the sunny beaches of Hawaii. Courtney, Harold and Blaineley compete to provide the final three with rewards, and Bridgette returns from Siberia... bringing a territorial bear with her.

Tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: According to Geoff and Bridgette, the final challenge was supposed to be unwinnable. Courtney still manages to pull off the win as Geoff and Bridgette don't mention that fact until after she does.
  • All Animals Are Dogs: The Siberian bear Bruno fetches Blaineley, at this time a Bandage Mummy stiff as a board, out of the water as if he's a dog retrieving a stick. Once back on land, he takes his time chewing on her.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Bridgette is the only one who feels bad for Blaineley being all injured, even despite the fact Blaineley had been nothing but awful to her all season. Not even Owen feels bad for her; he only agrees to help her with the challenge out of fear of reprisals from Heather. And while Bridgette personally doesn't like Heather, she balances out the support by volunteering a few of the others.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Used when Bridgette describes three of the difficulties Alejandro faced in the contest: rabid caterpillars in the Amazon, alien creature things in Area 51 and Owen's indigestion in Sweden.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Bruno, the bear that Bridgette nursed back to health in Siberia, is this to everyone except Bridgette.
  • Blatant Lies: Duncan says that he took the fall after being punched out by Cody to make Cody feel better.
  • The Chew Toy: Blaineley becomes this as part of her Laser-Guided Karma (see below), being cared for by an incompetent Owen, being used as a surf board for Owen, and becoming a literal chew toy for Bruno the bear.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Harold's explanation of the most common form of death in Drumheller? Death in Drumheller.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Geoff is generally amused by Blaineley's suffering, though he does express concern over Bruno the bear possibly eating her.
  • Got Volunteered: Blaineley is forced to represent Heather by Duncan, and has to do Heather's helping challenge herself. Bridgette forces Owen, Eva, Justin and Leshawna to also represent Heather in order to even out the numbers.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • Bridgette expresses astonishment over being the only one to feel sorry for Blaineley. She suggests Owen help her since he's a Nice Guy, but even he has his limits.
    • Despite not being the actual show, Courtney, Harold and Owen still get cued up for a song. Geoff says Chris told them they had to do this.
    • When Geoff lets it slip that the challenge was supposed to be unwinnable, Bridgette says that was Chris's idea, too.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After all the bad things Blaineley did during the show, she ended up in a full-body cast. While Bridgette was more compassionate towards her, Geoff was more than happy about this.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Harold takes his time answering the question, Geoff says it's a half-hour show. Harold counters it's 22 minutes, including opening and closing credits.
  • Make-Out Kids: Tyler and Lindsay.
  • The Marvelous Deer: Harold chooses the deer as Cody's spirit animal. Everyone laughs at his choice, but Harold sticks to his guns.
  • Moment Killer: Bruno keeps interrupting Bridgette and Geoff's attempts to get affectionate with each other when they are happily reunited.
  • Mustache Vandalism: While discussing the Final Three, Geoff draws doodles on their digital headshots with a light pen. The soft Cody is adorned with pigtails and lipstick. The devious Alejandro gets devil horns, a toothed grin, and nose hair long enough to flow in the wind. And longterm pain-in-the-read Heather receives a vampire makeover complete with dripping fans, outlined eyes and eyebrows, and a High Collar of Doom.
  • No Sympathy: Except for Bridgette, no one feels sorry for all the assorted injuries that Blaineley suffered. Even Owen doesn't care (presumably because he remembers how she openly feigned being upset about his elimination just to look good to viewers).
    • This also comes up for Heather as she is so hated by the other players, despite not being the Big Bad of the season, no one's on her side, with the exception of Blaineley. Whereas, Alejandro has five of the cast on his side, despite being the reason many of them being eliminated. Bridgette even Lampshades this.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bruno provokes this from a lot of characters, but particularly Geoff (for getting near Bridgette), Beth (who the bear keeps sniffing around), and Blaineley (who becomes the bear's chew toy).
  • Panthera Awesome: Courtney chooses the jaguar as Alejandro's sprit animal. She gives her reasons, and Geoff agrees with her choice...for other reasons.
    Courtney: They're smart, they're lean, they're fast-
Geoff: They're spotty, you shouldn't leave them alone with your kitten.
  • Properly Paranoid: The three contestants are told to pick an animal from the chalkboard that they think best fits the person they're supporting. Harold picks a deer for Cody, which everyone thinks is laughable, but it's later revealed the challenge entails going up against the selected animal. Harold boasts that he anticipated that, hence picking a deer.
  • Series Continuity Error: Tyler put his hand up as being eliminated by Alejandro, despite the fact that Alejandro wanted to keep him around, and never directly tried to get him eliminated.
  • Shoe Slap: In the exclusive clip, Courtney boasts that she deserves to be in the finale because she's better than Cody and Heather and her singing is superior. To demonstrate, she sings a few lines disparaging Duncan and Gwen, who are sunbathing right next to her. Deeply irritated, Duncan grabs a sandal and throws it in her face, which knocks her over.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title comes from the movie Paradise, Hawaiian Style.
    • Bridgette says that Heather has "outwitted and outlasted" all of the other contestants.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Owen over having to help Blaineley through this physical challenge, which includes a Doberman.
  • Undying Loyalty: Bruno the bear from Siberia becomes this for Bridgette after she nursed him back to health.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Izzy disappears for the rest of the episode once the Peanut Gallery divides into groups based on who they root for.
