Recap / Total Drama: "Aftermath I: Trent's Descent"

Go To

Geoff and Bridgette host the very first Total Drama aftermath, interviewing Izzy and Trent.

Tropes:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: A gender inversion. Geoff says that Heather is the hottest girl on the show, claiming that she has an "edge". Bridgette angrily dismisses this edge as simply her being cruel to people.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Trent upon learning that Gwen told his team to vote him off.
  • Blatant Lies: Izzy saying she'd never harm the intern. It doesn't take a Lie Hammer to see she wasn't telling the truth.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: When Geoff and Bridgette argue about whether or not Trent should have been eliminated, Bridgette says that Gwen shouldn't have gone behind his back to do so, while Geoff says that Trent's continuous throwing of challenges would've gotten him eliminated anyway. They continue to do this for the rest of the episode.
  • Break Up Song: Trent sings one that he made after he and Gwen broke up, and it REALLY hits the former contestants (except Noah). It also helps Geoff and Bridgette get over their argument from earlier in the episode.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Izzy casually snarks at Geoff and Bridgette's elimination in the first half of the episode.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: Geoff not-so-accidentally says that Heather is hot, which leads to him being in trouble with Bridgette until the end of the episode.
  • Feud Episode: Geoff and Bridgette get into an argument over Trent's elimination and Geoff saying that Heather was hot.
  • Foreshadowing: Courtney is preparing to sue the show for her elimination in the previous season. She also expresses irritation over Duncan spending more time with Gwen, informing a lot of her irritation with the guy later in the season.
  • Freudian Excuse: When asked about his obsession with the number nine, Trent explains as the result of a toy train that his grandfather had given him. It had ten wheels, but one fell off after the old man died.
  • Graceful Loser: Izzy and Trent don't seem so bummed out over their eliminations, having gotten over it in the intervening time between those episodes and the Aftermath.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Chris really isn't happy about Geoff and Bridgette getting their own show, going so far as to disguise himself as Sasquatchanakwa so that he could appear as a fan on webcam to show his rage.
  • Hollywood Restraining Order: Izzy spots her ex Graham Cracker in the audience of the Aftermath. She explains to Geoff and Bridgette that he hit her with a restraining order last year that forbids her from coming closer than 200 meters near him. Despite acknowledging that he is her "old boyfriend", she views the situation as a long-distance relationship and advises Graham to get blinds she can actually see through.
  • Honor Before Reason: It turns out that Chef offered Izzy the same kind of deal to split the prize money that he'd offer DJ. Izzy responds by kicking him in the gut.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Two examples:
    • Geoff accidentally blabs about Gwen going behind Trent's back, not knowing that Trent was on video camera right above him, leading to an Oh, Crap! moment from Geoff.
    • When Izzy said she would "never hurt that intern", and her lie detector goes off, we get a shot of the intern in the studio, who promptly decides to leg it.
  • Lack of Empathy: Of all of the other contestants Noah alone isn't touched by Trent's song, looking bored and annoyed.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After Trent freaks over what Gwen did, Geoff expresses surprise that absolutely no one had told him what happened.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": When Geoff unknowingly blurts out what Gwen did in front of Trent, everyone else stares in shock because they know how badly this is gonna go.
  • Mustache Vandalism: Upon learning the truth behind Trent's obsession with the number 9, Bridgette brings up a digital photo of Gwen and doodles shocked eyebrows and tear-filled eyes onto it with a light pen to illustrate how Gwen'll feel when she hears the true story.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: During a meeting with "Steve the Yeti", Chef blurts out Chris (who is disguised as a sasquatchanakwa)' name outloud, causing the latter to glance at the audience with a nervous smile.
  • Pet the Dog: Though both Courtney and Eva seemed unsympathetic towards Trent at first, both can be seen tearing up after his second song.
  • Single Tear: When Trent is explaining his obsession with the number 9, EVA of all people is seen shedding one of these.
  • Spoiler Title: The extended title of the episode spoils that Trent's been eliminated. Granted, it's not as bad in this case due to this being the first Aftermath episode, meaning viewers who have not been aware of what Aftermath episodes are about wouldn't be aware of it.
  • Throat-Slitting Gesture: The last one of the peanut gallery introduced is Courtney, who at that time is preoccupied with a phone call with her lawyer to sue the show for not letting her be a contestant. Geoff laughs nervously and waves his fingers across his neck to get the camera off Courtney.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Trent explains that when he was young, his granddad gave him a toy train. One of the wheels fell off shortly before the old man died, leaving the train with an uneven nine. 9 has been his lucky number since.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: Izzy is enjoying crackers in the waiting room when she's called in to appear on the Aftermath. Not done snacking, she places some food into her cleavage and eats from it during the interview.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Bridgette over her boyfriend calling Heather (someone who was pretty mean to her) the hottest girl on the show.
