Recap / Tomorrow Girl Vs Kamen America

Go To

An alien spaceship reaches Earth, and a warrior named Sheeva reports they have reached the search of the mana they sought. The ship’s commander, Empress Anacosta, sends Shiva down to assess Earth’s resources and defenses. Sheeva drops down to Quagmire, USA, and she attacks a random civilian. Then Heidi “Tomorrow Girl” Yfory arrives to stop her; Sheeva is excited to meet a worthy opponent and begins to fight.

The two battle and Sheeva quickly proves superior, but Carly “Kamen America” Vanders arrives and attacks Sheeva as well. Carly and Heidi collide and bicker, with Heidi thinking Carly stopped her from winning and Carly wondering if the fight is another of Lansky’s frauds. The two fight each other before Carly’s powers reach their time limit and start to fail, but as they do, Carly explains she originally came to help Heidi.

Sheeva mocks the heroines and prepares to shoot them, but Morgan "Tomorrow Man" Yfory arrives and blocks her shot. Sheeva is excited to sense someone with so much mana and she teleports away to report what she found to Anacosta; she also notes that her immediate superior, Lady Yelena, had mentioned Morgan before. Morgan says that he sent Carly to help Heidi, and Heidi apologizes for screwing up by attacking Carly. Morgan leaves and Heidi sighs that, once again, he’s saving the day while she’s just a failure. Carly lends an ear as Heidi vents about how everyone expects greatness from her but she hasn’t reenable to follow through yet. The two leave to get a meal.

Sheeva goes back to the spaceship and reports what she found, noting that Earth has plenty of mana that can be farmed from its men. Anacosta has her prepare a mana extractor for this purpose. Meanwhile, Carly and Heidi have burgers while Heidi morosely guesses that Sheeva will return. Carly is optimistic that Sheeva just fled, and she asks to know more about Heidi. The two reveal that they haven’t dated anyone because of their enemies and a lack of time for dating; they bond over this. Heidi does note she was interested in a boy, and after Carly cajoles her, Heidi reveals her full origin story: she was hit with a Tomorrow Beam, got powers, and then got adopted by Morganas his niece.

Carly gives Heidi the nickname ‘Tom,’ short for ‘Tomorrow Girl,’ and Heidi protests. Then Carly gives her own origin story, describing how she was hit by space debris after doing a USO event and obtained radiation-induced powers which she uses to defend America. The two depart on better terms, with Heidi happy that she was able to tell her problems to someone who understands them.

Anacosta rallies her warriors, the Grand Army of Amazonia, and pledges to destroy their enemies once they take Earth’s mana and use it to replenish their magic reserves. She orders the mana extractor be activated. On Earth, a witch named Henrietta Porter sees the spaceship in her crystal ball and runs to get help, but not before the extractor turns on and men all over the world collapse as their energy is drained. Anacosta then orders that Yelena bring her Morgan.

Henrietta teleports herself and Heidi into Carly’s studio. Carly panics and decks Henrietta, though they soon clear up the miscommunication and Heidi introduces Henrietta to Carly. Carly refers to Heidi as ‘Tom,’ amusing Henrietta, and says she likes Carly. After that she finally gets down to business and explains the problem. Her own magic isn’t strong enough to hurt the spaceship, and the other magicians she knows are men and thus were weakened by the mana extractor, but she she knows of Carly’s exploits and thinks Carly might be able to do some damage. She offers to teleport Carly and Heidi so that they can deal with the Amazonians themselves.

The spaceship turns out to have an anti-magic shell, so Henrietta teleports Carly and Heidi to the League of Justice Headquarters and then leaves. Heidi notes that the place is unusually deserted and is shocked to stumble upon Morgan, now looking drained and exhausted. Morgan tells her that she must save the day because he cannot do it, and he asks her to trust in Carly. Heidi swears she’ll succeed and Morgan says he believes in her. At that moment, Yelena and Sheeva teleport in, and Sheeva holds off the heroes while Yelena grabs Morgan. The villains teleport away, horrifying Heidi as she fails to stop them from grabbing her uncle.

Heidi despairs at their failures, but then Henrietta teleports back and brings them to her home. She says the mana extractor will kill all men on Earth and explains that the Amazonians are in fact the Amazons of myth and legend, who left Earth long ago to build a galactic empire. She gets Carly to remember that Yelena had a magic staff with a huge crystal, and Henrietta theorizes that destroying the crystal will save the world. She does say they should think about what to do if that doesn’t work, and Heidi says they’ll rip the spaceship apart until they find something that does. Henrietta prepares to teleport the girls somewhere else.

Yelena boasts that Morgan’s mana will be enough to make her the strongest commander in all Amazonia, and she muses on possibly overthrowing the Anacosta. She then orders Sheeva to prepare her personal squad to crush any remaining resistance on Earth. Down below, Heidi leads Carly to Morgan’s secret base. This time it’s Carly who is getting antsy, but Heidi reassures her that she will stick by Carly’s side. Carly notes that it’s good Heidi is more confident now, and Heidi attributes this to Carly and to Morgan’s admonition to believe in her. The two enter the secret basement and reach an experimental spaceship that Morgan and Heidi set up. Heidi takes the pilot’s seat and blasts off.

The spaceship bombards a city. When a soldier reports the approaching spaceship from Earth, Yelena orders it destroyed, but that doesn’t stop the two heroines who simply used the ship as a decoy to draw off attacks while they breached its hull. They burst inside and defeat several soldiers before Sheeva catches up to them. Carly asks Heidi to leave Sheeva to her while Heidi finds Morgan, and Heidi says she trusts Carly and so will honor that request. Carly decks Sheeva while Heidi flies off through the ship.

Heid smashes through several soldiers and uses her laser eyes to burst into Yelena’s room. Yelena boasts that she can overthrow Anacosta with Morgan’s mana and then offers to make Heidi her second-in-command, but Heidi refuses. Then Carly catches up to them, having defeated Sheeva. Raising her magic staff, Yelena says she’ll draw on Morgan’s power to defeat them, and the heroines battle her without success. Carly says they need a distraction, so they both attack her at the same time. Yelena shoots at Heidi with her staff but Heidi users her super-speed to dodge, then catches her and shatters the crystal on her staff. Heidi then decks Yelena and knocks her out.

Heidi is thrilled by the victory but then collapses on Carly in exhaustion. Morgan, having been released from containment when the staff broke, says Heidi will be fine and they all just need some rest. They go back to the League of Justice Headquarters and wait for Heidi to wake up, which takes a few days; by he time she does, Cary has fallen asleep in a chair by Heidi’s bed, though she quickly awakens too when Heidi talks to her. Morgan and Henrietta also walk in.

Heidi panics upon learning she was out for days, then is further shocked when Morgan calls in a special visitor: Anacosta. Anacosta apologizes and thanks them for stopping Yelena’s coup; she also says that Yelena had not been permitted to farm mana as she did. She pledges to fix any damage incurred by Earth and gives Heidi an honorary military title, offering to let her and Carly join the Amazonian legions. Heidi and Carly decline the offer and Anacosta compliments the heroines to Morgan, who agrees with her. The heroines happily depart to go get burgers.

This comic contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Alien Invasion: The villains of the story want to steal Earth’s resources, particularly the living essence of all its men.
  • The Dragon: Yelena serves as this to Anacosta, and Sheeva serves as this to Yelena.
  • Never Trust a Title: Tomorrow Girl and Kamen America only fight each other for a couple of pages before they clear up the misunderstanding and team up to defeat the Amazonians.
  • The Starscream: Yelena betrays Anacosta the moment she thinks she has enough power to do so.
  • Villain Respect: The Amazonians have a lot of respect for Morgan on account of his massive amount of mana. Yelena also develops this towards Heidi.
  • We Can Rule Together: Yelena, already planning to seize the empire, offers to make Heidi her second-in-command.
