Recap / Tokyo Ghoul Raid On Kanous Lab Arc

Go To

The seventh Story Arc of the Tokyo Ghoul series consisting of chapters 95 - 107 from the original manga and episodes 4 and 5 of the anime's second season. The arc centers around Kaneki's gang raiding Kanou's summer mansion in an effort to find the doctor's whereabouts within the estate's hidden laboratory. Aogiri Tree, and the CCG, have also arrived on the scene to search for the doctor.

The second season of the anime merges this arc with the Second Cochlea Raid, an unseen event in the manga that only happened in the background. As such, Kaneki does not end up meeting Rize or Kanou again in these episodes, although other elements are left in.

Short Summary

Continuing his search for Akihiro Kanou, Kaneki's group (Tsukiyama, Banjou, and the gas mask siblings), as well as Madamn A, arrive at the doctor's summer mansion. Upon investigation, they stumble upon a hidden cell wall made of kagune, and decide to walk beyond it; entering into Kanou's hidden laboratory.

Walking through the hidden facility, Kaneki's group is stalled by the One-Eye sisters, Nashiro and Kurona, but Kaneki orders his gang to deal with them as he pushes forward through the lab on his own. Tsukiyama battles the One-Eye sisters in Kaneki's place, but is interrupted by Naki's group who have Eto alongside them. Kaneki's solo journey would then end up reaching a dead-end, but is greeted by Shachi who charges against Kaneki for another duel. Fights take place in the facility as Tsukiyama takes on Naki, the One-Eye sisters fight Eto, and Kaneki takes on Shachi.

Dodging the attacks from the One-Eye sisters, Eto reveals Nashiro and Kurona's tragic story to them, and calls out the two for following along with Kanou's plan where the two believe that their papa was truly Kanou even though their real parents have been long dead. This causes Nashiro and Kurona to break-down in denial, and while Banjou was seen witnessing their fight, Eto catches him off-guard, and pulls out Banjou's bones.

Fighting against Shachi, the SS-ranked ghoul eventually uses a major attack against Kaneki that forces the two into a room below them. Here, the two realize that they have landed in Kanou's primary lab where the doctor's been conducting experiments with Rize, and greets the two ghouls for their arrival. Shachi watches on as Kanou congratulates Kaneki for making it this far on his own strength.

Revealing that Yoshimura was the true creator of Aogiri Tree, Kanou offers Kaneki a chance to team up with him to one day show the truth of this flawed world to the boy. However, before Kaneki could give his answer, Yomo shows up to break the machine holding Rize captive, and escapes with her. During his escape, Yomo tells Kaneki to not stray from the path he's chosen, and leaves the boy a warning that the CCG have finally arrived at the mansion. Once Yomo left, Kaneki charges at Kanou, but is stalled by Shachi, who escapes with the doctor at hand; leaving Kaneki to fight with the failed experiments Kanou left behind.

At this point, the CCG have entered the facility, and break off into three groups. Suzuya goes off on his own, and runs into his old classmates, Nashiro and Kurona, who were attempting to escape after the fight with Eto. The second investigator unit led by Amon and Akira come across the room where Naki and Tsukiyama's groups were fighting, and the two ghoul enemies decide that their groups need to team up in order to survive against the CCG. The third unit led by Shinohara stumbles upon the main lab, and witness Kaneki after his kagune had begun to evolve into a Kakujya centipede form upon eating the experiments. Deeming centipede Kaneki a danger to keep alive, Shinohara readies himself for combat, and activates Arata form. Kaneki struggles to control himself remembering his past failures as Shinohara deduces that the ghoul has begun to go crazy.

In the meantime, Amon and Akira's unit continue their fight against the newly teamed up Naki and Tsukiyama group while Suzuya fights against the One-Eyed sisters. During the Suzuya fight, Nashiro and Kurona think back to a time when they were CCG Academy classmates with him, and discovered Suzuya to be a monster that doesn't feel anything. Meeting again in the present, they attempt to finish Suzuya off for good, but are beaten down by the investigator to the point of Kurona escaping with a heavily injured Nashiro.

In an attempt to end the stalemate, Akira throws an untested gas grenade that affects ghouls, and is able to temporarily immobilize Tsukiyama and Naki's group. However, Naki breaks free, and is able to severely injure Akira; forcing Amon to come to her aid, and provides an opening for the ghouls to escape. At that same moment, the battle between centipede Kaneki and Shinohara rages on.

Spliting away from Naki's group, Tsukiyama, and the gas mask siblings, come across the injured Banjou as they all agree that returning to Kaneki was their first priority. Meanwhile, Amon gets a brief glimpse of the One-Eyed sisters escaping as his unit, and the injured Akira, arrive at Shinohara's location. However, upon seeing Shinohara defeated, Amon charges forward as the next to fight Kaneki.

The fight between Amon and Kaneki rages on as Suzuya is seen also arriving at the main lab to provide back-up for Amon. They eventually break through to Kaneki where Amon reminds him of their past encounter in which Kaneki showed human traits as a ghoul. As a result, a portion of Kaneki's sanity returns. Kaneki uses this chance to escape the lab as the CCG stay behind to provide aid for Shinohara.

Still not fully sane, Kaneki reunites with his gang, but stabs Banjou in the chest when the latter steps forward to help him. Kaneki breaks down upon realizing what he had done, but is stunned to find that Banjou's kagune has finally awakened, and heals the injuries he obtained from Kaneki and Eto. Banjou then informs Kaneki that he is still his shield, and that Kaneki should think about saving himself before trying to help others.

At the lab, Shinohara is showen to have survived his fight with Kaneki as Amon berates Suzuya for leaving his partner on his own. Kanou is also revealed to have joined with Aogiri Tree as Kurona appears before him in the hopes that papa will heal Nashiro. However, he informs her that due to the immense damage she's suffered, Nashiro can't be healed. He then exits the lab with Eto and Shachi; leaving Kurona behind to stay with her dying sister.

Long Summary

Kaneki's gang, with Madamn A, arrive at Kanou's summer mansion

In a flashback, Nanao Yasuhisa is seen with his wife watching his two daughters, Nashiro and Kurona, play outside Kanou's summer mansion. Nanao asks what they want to be when they get older, which one answers to be a cook of her own restaurant. The other sister states that she will be a returning customer of the restaurant, which Nanao praises the two for always wanting to be together. The sisters agree; wishing to always be together with their mama and papa as well.

In the present, Kaneki's group is seen with Madamn A. arriving at the now worn down mansion. Madamn A. complains about wanting to leave now that her job to lead them here is done, but is ignored as Kaneki opens the suspiciously unlocked door. Entering the mansion, he orders the group to split up, and to start looking around.

Banjou can be heard in the background being scared of the possibility of ghosts as Kaneki asks Madamn A. of the location that she interacted with Kanou. She informs Kaneki of a nearby reception room, which Kaneki enters and begins to investigate. Looking through a bookshelf, Kaneki stumbles upon a hidden photo of the Yasuhina family that used to live in the mansion, but before he could continue further, Banjou enters the room to inform Kaneki that they found the stairs to the basement.

Tsukiyama explains to Kaneki the tragedy of the previous mansion owners

Moments later as the group is now walking through the mansion's basement, Tsukiyama explains to Kaneki the previous family owner. Of how it was owned by a man living a wonderful life with his wife and children, but all came crashing down when a ghoul entered the scene. He informs Kaneki that the ghoul had slaughtered the two parents, and that the daughters, who survived, were forced to watch their mother and father's horrific deaths.

Kaneki finds the story sad, which Tsukiyama reminds him that it's the kind of brutality expected from most ghouls. He next asks Tsukiyama what happened to the daughters, which he answers that the two girls were most likely taken in by the CCG as orphans that will one day grow up to be Investigators with a deep hatred of wanting revenge against ghouls. Realizing that Kaneki's fight against Aogiri Tree is going a similar way as the two daughters, Tsukiyama is left wondering if Kaneki's actions are actually an attempt to break this cycle of revenge.

Reaching the end of the basement, Banjou comes to the conclusion that their search has come up empty. Kaneki turns to Madamn A. in a threatening manner, which she senses the danger, and informs him that she truly didn't lie. Kaneki launches a kagune strike towards her, but she ducks the attack, and continues to say that she's been truthful. Figuring that Madamn A. wasn't lying, Kaneki wonders if Kanou had already left. However, Banjou points Kaneki at the wall the kagune attack just destroyed; revealing a giant kagune behind the destoryed bricks.

Kanou informing Kurona and Nashiro that they have uninvited guests

Kaneki questions what he was currently looking at, which Tsukiyama explains that its an RC Cell Wall that had been developed by ghouls of the 24th Ward; a wall of meat created from ghoul kagune that can disguise itself by looking like normal structure walls. Walking beyond the kagune wall, Kaneki spots a camera and figures that Kanou was currently watching them from nearby. On the other side, Kanou is seen looking at the video-screens for his security cameras, and informs Kurona and Nashiro to ready themselves for a fight against uninvited guests.

Walking through Kanou's hidden facility, the group questions if it would be easier to have Hinami around to navigate them through this maze. Kaneki answers that a place such as this would be too dangerous for her, and then states that he can sense someone ahead of them at an unknown distance. Looking around, Banjou notes how the tunnel is built differently than the mansion, which Tsukiyama answers that it may have been an institution for something.

The group then walks along a bridge as Banjou suddenly gets attacked by a giant creature from the water below. Kaneki activates his kagune, and stabs into the giant looking human trying to attack Banjou. However, Kaneki watches as a kagune shoots out of the creature, and begins to consume the host. Kaneki figures that its one of Kanou's failed experiments as they leave it to die and continue onward.

Kaneki's group come across the One-Eyed Sisters

Kaneki's group eventually enter a large open room where Kurona and Nashiro are seen standing before them waiting for their arrival. The One-Eye sisters figure that Madamn A. gave away their location, but despite Madamn A. complaining that they left her behind, the sisters state that killing their opposition is their best option. The One-Eye sisters prepare their kagunes, but Kaneki takes this opportunity to race passed them to head to the next room. Kaneki orders the group to deal with the sisters in his place as Tsukiyama accepts the order, and swings his kagune at Kurona and Nashiro. The sisters reply not to get in their way as the two sides begin their fight.

Heading forward alone, Kaneki thinks over the situation, and figures that Aogiri Tree is after Kanou, because his ability to turn humans into ghouls will provide the organization a means to increase their firepower. Kaneki comes to the conclusion that no matter what, he can't allow for Kanou and Aogiri Tree to join forces. However, he eventually reaches the end of the hallway. Kaneki figures that there is most-likely another hidden meat wall as he walks toward the dead end. Shachi can also be seen in the distance watching Kaneki move about.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e73958.jpg
Tsukiyama vs. Kurona and Nashiro

The battle between Tsukiyama and the One-Eye sisters continues as the two realize that they are struggling to break through his defenses. Tsukiyama taunts the two asking them to show better hardness in their attacks, and orders Banjou to wait for him to finish the fight himself. Getting annoyed at Tsukiyama's words, the sisters attack once more, which Tsukiyama praises the two for taking the fight more seriously. However, their fight is interrupted as Naki of Aogiri Tree enters the scene to block the next sister's attack.

Naki is next seen complaining; realizing that he messed up by saving an enemy. Banjou takes note of Aogiri's sudden appearance as Naki states to everyone around him that he will be the one to take mad scientist; which Eto in the distance corrects him that it's just scientist. The sisters question who their next target should be as the rest of Kaneki's group realize the poor position they are now in.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f02957.jpg
Kaneki vs. Shachi

Returning to Kaneki, he has finished up his investigation of the hallway's dead-end, and figures that this wasn't the correct way to Kanou. However, he is then greeted by the arrival of Shachi. Dropping from the ceiling, Shachi charges forward as Kaneki realizes that Aogiri Tree has also entered Kanou's lab. Kaneki dodges Shachi's first major attacks knowing that it will be the end of him if he takes one of Shachi's powerful blows. Kaneki thinks back to what Yamori told him about ghouls being weak in the eyes, but has his eye-poke attack blocked by Shachi's forehead; breaking Kaneki's finger in the process. Kaneki snaps his finger back into place, and claims to Shachi that he will beat him after reading his moves more thoroughly.

Back to the large room, the three sides, Kaneki's gang, the One-Eye sisters, and Aogiri Tree's group, are seen ready to fight. Nashiro and Kurona figure that they can't let either enemy leave in order to protect Kanou while Tsukiyama deduces that in a triangle standoff, the first to move correctly will be the deciding factor. Naki from Aogiri's group charges forward first, and clashes kagunes with Tsukiyama, who deems Naki an idiot for wasting the first turn as the two ghouls battle it out. Naki's bodyguards, Gagi and Guge are the next to move, but are blocked off by the gas mask siblings (Ichimi, Jiro and Sante), and forced to fight them. Nashiro and Kurona notice Eto in the distance and go after said Aogiri ghoul as Banjou watches the battles before him unfold. Banjou remembers back to calling himself Kaneki's shield, and heads off as well; believing that he also needs to accomplish something for Kaneki.

Kaneki asking Shachi why he is holding back

The fight between Kaneki and Shachi continues as Kaneki manages to land a major blow against the SS-ghoul with a kagune technique picked up from watching how Shachi moves. Kaneki attacks with his kagune once more, and stabs into Shachi who was attempting to block the attack with his own kagune. Kaneki then uses the opening to throw Shachi back, but is starting to get angry about the fight, and asks Shachi why he is holding back.

Kaneki orders Shachi not to believe that his opponent doesn't have the strength to defeat an SS-ranked ghoul, and to come at him full power. Kaneki attacks once more with his kagune informing Shachi not to underestimate him as Kaneki gets multiple hits in. He thinks over his situation, and comes to the conclusion that despite being the respected 6th Ward's leader, Kaneki will defeat Shachi for getting in his way. Kaneki goes all out at this point with an overwhelming kagune attack as Shachi attempts to endure it.

Back to the large room, the One-Eye sisters chase after Eto who stops to look back at the two from a high location. Looking down at Nashiro and Kurona, Eto talks about how an empty hole will never be filled no matter how much is placed within. The sisters attack Eto questioning what nonsense she is talking about, which Eto, having easily dodged their attack, answers that she is referring to how the two are using Kanou as a replacement for their dead father. Eto calls out Nashiro and Kurona for looking away from the truth; that a substitute will never give them back the parents they've always wanted to be with.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/h29587.jpg
Eto calling out the sisters for believing that Kanou's their real father

The sisters deny the deduction, and attack Eto once more, but like before, Eto easily dodges, and continues the story. She informs the sisters that Kanou has taken advantage of the pain the two endured in the past, and acts as their father in order control them. Nashiro and Kurona attempt to deny it once more as Eto claims that no one alive at the moment truly loves them, and that now that they are ghouls, they can't return to the human world they were once a part of. Seeing the two fall to their knees, Eto leaves off by asking the One-Eye sisters what their opinion is on eating people. Banjou can be seen watching from a distance, and tries to make sense of the situation, but is caught off-guard by Eto who pulls out the bones from his chest.

Back to Kaneki's location, he steps toward a supposedly beaten Shachi ready to cannibalize on the SS-ranked ghoul. However, Shachi grabs Kaneki's face, and lifts him up; asking Kaneki if that was all he had. Shachi then uses his full power, and smashes Kaneki through the floor to the next lower level of the facility. Shachi drops down before Kaneki who struggles to get himself back up, and is shocked to see that all the damage he previously inflicted had no real effect on Shachi. At that point, a laugh is heard in the distance as a man steps into view to greet Kaneki and Shachi. He asks Kaneki if the boy has been taking his medicine as Kaneki notices Kanou, and the captured Rize inside a tank, before him.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/i82756.jpg
Kaneki seeing that Rize is still alive

Inside the tank, Rize lifts her head to see Kaneki, who's shocked to see that Rize was alive all this time. He thinks back to what Tatara claimed when Kaneki was brought before him, and wonders if Aogiri Tree doesn't know either. Kanou then speaks to Kaneki about how he appears to have failed to control Nashiro and Kurona, and that Kaneki is still his ultimate creation due to making it this far on his own strength. Looking at the doctor, Kaneki asks why Kanou has been using Rize to make ghouls.

Kanou answers him with a metaphor about tamed birds being trapped within man-made birdcages, and that he has come to realize that the world is trapped within a twisted birdcage. He continues by stating that in order to break the birdcage, the creation of the One-Eyed Ghouls was needed, and that he sacrificed everything through endless experiments in the hopes of one day succeeding to offer the world a ray of hope. Getting angry, Kaneki finds the answer weak, and asks if that's truly an excuse for turning him into a ghoul. Kanou answers that he's still a doctor that was able to save his life with the experiment, which enrages Kaneki even further.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/j98753.jpg
Kanou offering Kaneki a chance to join forces with him

Kaneki tells Kanou that the life the doctor's forced upon him has been a disaster, and that rather than being a doctor, claims Kanou to actually be a complete psycho. Shachi watches on as Kanou admits that his work is considered evil. However, he informs Kaneki that he is ready to not hide anymore since he has confirmed his experiment to be a success, and that he has already given up on living in a world controlled by humanity.

Reaching out to Kaneki, Kanou offers him the chance to follow the doctor to Aogiri Tree in order to establish a better life in a world for ghouls. Kaneki quickly rejects it, but Kanou rephrases his offer by stating to join only with him in order to show the world's true form. The doctor explains that he alone can show Kaneki the hidden truth of this world, and reveals to Kaneki that the original creator of Aogiri Tree was the Owl ghoul, Yoshimura. This revelation shocks Kaneki as he tries to make sense of how Kanou knows about the identity of Anteiku's manager. Kanou reminds Kaneki of how the boy's path up until now has been forced upon him by others, and offers him once more to join with him. Thinking it over wondering why Yoshimura created Aogiri, Kaneki was about to answer, but is interrupted at that point as the tank with Rize inside explodes.

Kaneki, Kanou and Shachi are left stunned at the sudden event, and see a ghoul now holding Rize. Taking off his mask, he reveals himself to be Renji Yomo of Anteiku. Yomo reminds Kaneki of the quote the boy once told him; that he can walk his own path, and states to Kaneki not to stray from the path Kaneki has chosen. Yomo moves to escape the facility with Rize as Kaneki calls out to him hoping for an explanation for what just happened. Before leaving, Yomo notices Shachi, but also leaves Kaneki a warning that the CCG have arrived at the mansion.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/k29348.jpg
CCG arrives on the scene

At the mansion basement, a group of CCG investigators led by Amon, Akira, Shinohara, and Suzuya, are seen walking beyond the kagune cell wall into Kanou's hidden lab. Shinohara notes that this is proof enough that Kanou is no average doctor, and advises the group to prepare for battle.

Returning to Kanou's lab, Kaneki is still left confused about Yomo's sudden appearance to rescue Rize. He regrets not understanding what's going on, and decides that his next move should be to return to his gang now that the CCG are on the scene. However, he suddenly remembers that Kanou was still in the room, and charges toward him. Shachi gets in the way, and lands a major blow that forces Kaneki to his knees; claiming that the boy is still no true match for him due to his powerlessness. Shachi next moves to Kanou's location, and grabs the doctor to escape the room. Kanou then presses a button on a tiny remote he was holding as containers all around Kaneki release the experiments Kanou was testing with. The experiments move towards Kaneki as Kanou leaves off with a comment that he looks forward to seeing Kaneki again, and then exits the room with Shachi. Kaneki is left to fight the experiments, but is enraged at being called powerless, and begins to completely overwhelm the fight.

As the CCG walk through the hallways of Kanou's lab, Suzuya has broken off from the group as Shinohara orders the investigators to split into two groups (half with Shinohara, and half with Amon) to investigate the facility. Amon and Shinohara tell each other to be careful as Amon and Akira's team split from the group. Amon is left wondering what Kanou is up to after witnessing the cell wall.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/l98347.jpg
Suzuya encounters his old classmates, Kurona and Nashiro

At another location in Kanou's facility, the One-Eye sisters are seen running away from their previous battle; having been mentally broken by Eto. However, they are greeted by Suzuya, who is surprised to see some familiar faces. Kurona and Nashiro recgonize Suzuya as well, which, upon seeing the sister's ghoul eyes, is surprised to find that the two of them have given up being human. The sisters claim that they don't care about humanity anymore as Suzuya pulls out his quinque ready to kill them.

At the large room of the facility, Tsukiyama and Naki are seen to still be fighting, as well as the gas mask siblings against Naki's two bodyguards. Amon's investigator group enters the room, and is quick to recgonize the two main fighters, Gourmet and Naki who is one of the S-ranked ghouls that escaped prison. Seeing the danger they are in, Tsukiyama offers Naki the possibility of temporary truce in order to have a better chance of survival against the CCG. Naki agrees as the two ghoul groups stop fighting to turn their full attention on the CCG.

Meanwhile, Shinohara's team enteres the main lab of Kanou's facility where Kaneki was left to fight the experiments. Shinohara notes the nearby corpses all around him and spots Kaneki eating some of the experiments at the far end of the room. Shinohara asks Kaneki if he's the boss of this place, which Kaneki states that all who get in his way will be eradicated.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/m92847.jpg
Shinohara witnesses Kaneki's incomplete Kakujya form, the Centipede

Looking at Kaneki, Shinohara takes note that he doesn't recgonize the ghoul's kagune as it looks like a centipede. Turning towards the investigators, Kaneki charges at Shinohara and company. Shinohara attempts to block the first strike with his quinque, but is forced to activate his Arata skill to get out of the way before his spine gets sliced. Upon closer observation, Shinohara realizes that Kaneki was still only about 50% through the evolution process, and hasn't completed his Kakujya form yet. Wondering what Kanou's been doing, Shinohara readies himself; claiming to centipede Kaneki that they can't leave a ghoul as dangerous as him alive. Shinohara activates his Arata form quinque as the other investigators stand by in awe seeing him now wearing armor. Shinohara then calls Amon and Akira's unit for possible back-up to fight centipede Kaneki, but is told that they are currently preoccupied with a battle of their own.

Returning to the large room, Amon blocks a strike from Naki, but then takes an elbow to the head from the ghoul, which knocks him back. Naki taunts him over the advantage of having a kagune give him extra limbs, but before he could move in for another attack, he takes a hit from Akira's quinque. Akira wishes to herself that she brought a more proper quinque type to counter Naki's kagune, but continues her assault anyway.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/n73856.jpg
Akira reveals her chimera-type quinque against Naki

She then reveals to have actually been wielding a chimera-type quinque that has multiple functions, and is able to create an opening; stabbing Naki through the chest. However, before she could finish Naki, Tsukiyama appears to attempt a killing blow on Akira and Amon, which they both dodge unscathed. Confused over the state of the battle, and worrying about Shinohara and Suzuya, Amon questions what is going on at the moment.

On Suzuya's side, Kurona and Nashiro are still attempting to land a devastating blow on him. However, Suzuya evades every attack, and is finding the class reunion to be fun. Getting annoyed, the sisters charge towards Suzuya once more, but are surprised to find that he had been sliced by one of their attacks. Suzuya looks down, and sees the organs popping out of his stomach.

A flashback occurs going back to a time when Kurona and Nashiro were juniors training at CCG Academy with a girl named Shizuku. As orphaned children showing a lot of potential, the sisters were able to easily rise in the ranks, and become Ghoul Investigators at a young age; leaving Shizuku behind to watch. One day as the two were on a walk, they witness their classmate, Suzuya, playing with a group of ants. The two think about Suzuya's background; of how he doesn't show up to class, wanders around aimlessly, and if his gender was actually male or female. However, despite those problems, the two of them could tell that Suzuya was special. They order him to stop killing the ants, but all Suzuya does is smile back. At another time, Shizuku runs into Kurona and Nashiro asking if they are going to attend the next lecture. She states that she will save the sister's seats, which the two thank her for.

Later on, the sisters encounter Academy Instructor, Uchino, who is trying to unravel the mystery of someone who's been constantly attacking stray animals. Uchino figures that it was most likely Suzuya's doing due to Suzuya's questionable background, but the sisters inform him that they haven't seen him. As the two get ready to leave, Uchino reveals that he suspected Suzuya, because there were rumors that the boy was once raised by a ghoul, which makes him a bit of a threat. Walking by themselves, Kurona and Nashino question Uchino's suspicion as they both believe that Suzuya isn't a bad person.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/o63485.jpg
Kurona and Nashiro's memory of them realizing that Suzuya feels nothing

The two are next seen attending Amon's lecture as he is finishing up his speech about how ghouls are the ones causing the world to become distorted. After the lecture, the sisters ask Amon if women can become investigators as great as him, which Amon answers that he knew of a few such as Mado's wife becoming an Associate Special-Class at just the age of 28. The sisters ask if this woman had ever reached the next level, but Amon answers that she was killed before ever making it that far during a fight against the One-Eyed Ghoul.

Some time later, the sisters get word that their classmate, Shizuku, had died due to illness before she ever got to become a Ghoul Investigator. The two take a walk in the woods wondering if Shizuku is now with their mother and father. They spot Suzuya nearby, and asks if he feels anything about the classmate they had just lost. Suzuya asks why they are taking a simple death of someone so seriously, which annoys the sisters. The two ask if this is truly how he feels about their friend's death, which Suzuya states that she is just one of many that have already died. Looking at Suzuya, Kurona and Nashiro come to the realization that he was an empty person that cared about nothing. That he was indeed the killer of all the small creatures, such as the dogs and cats, that have been popping up dead around the Academy.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/p83957.jpg
Suzuya revealing his knife arsenal to Kurona and Nashiro

Back to the present, the One-Eyed sisters watch as Suzuya struggles to keep his organs in his stomach. Kurona and Nashiro look upon their former classmate in pity, and charge toward him for their finishing attack. As they got close however, Suzuya pulls out a knife, and stabs Kurona in her ghoul eye. Nashiro yells to her sister in shock, but is told by Kurona not to worry as the injury will eventually heal. Suzuya then reveals to the sisters his many hidden knives under his coat, and asks if their healing will be able to keep up.

Slicing up Kurona's body, Suzuya asks if the pain hurts, and orders her to enjoy 45 more strikes. Pulling out more knives from his coat, Suzuya continues to slice, and stabs her with many of the knives; leaving them in her body until Kurona is forced to her knees. Suzuya then leaves to go after Nashiro as Kurona wonders to herself if Suzuya views her as one of the many ants he crushed in the past.

Nashiro charges at Suzuya in an attempt to help her sister, but this time around, Suzuya pulls out his quinque, and slices her across the chest. Kurona watches as her sister coughs up blood as Suzuya stands by watching the sisters suffer. Kurona gets up, and races over to her sister as the two remember back to the time that they were together as Kanou experimented on them to turn them into One-Eyed Ghouls.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/q48375.jpg
Suzuya cuts off Nashiro's hand

Seeing the two now holding hands, Suzuya cuts of Nashiro's hand with his quinque. Realizing that this is a fight they can't win, Kurona grabs what left of Nashiro, and starts to run; hoping that papa Kanou can still save them. Suzuya however, chooses not to chase as his organs were about ready to fall out of his body. Suzuya stands by to sew up the cut across his stomach as the sisters disappear from sight. Still on the run, Kurona continues telling Nashiro that Kanou will help her, and that they will always be together.

In Kanou's primary lab, Shinohara's investigators are seen trying to fire their weapons at the evading centipede Kaneki as Shinohara questions if he can handle the fight in Arata form by himself. Kaneki is heard blaming himself for the deaths that have occurred up to this point, and deduces it to be his lack of ability. He states to himself that being weak will get all those he cares about killed, and that to continue living, he must continue to eat ghouls, and defeat those that get in his way. Kaneki starts to act odd, and begins to list all the crazy events that have happened around him until this point. Shinohara confirms that of all the ghouls he's met in his time, this one was the craziest.

Akira throws the untested gas grenade

Returning to the large facility room, Amon concludes that their fight against the ghouls has been a stalemate, and figures that they should think about retreating as Akira claims that things might have been different had Shinohara been with them. Tsukiyama hears of Akira mentioning Shinohara, and begins to worry about Kaneki. He thinks back to Kaneki's efforts to become stronger by feeding on enemy ghouls over the past six months, and knows that his resort to cannibalism to catch up to Aogiri Tree will eventually ruin his sanity. Knowing that Kaneki was in danger of possibly dying to Shinohara, Tsukiyama moves to finish off the investigators. However, Akira throws an experimental gas grenade onto the floor.

The movements of Tsukiyama and Naki's ghoul groups are forced to their knees as Akira reveals that it's a untested prototype that is able to affect respiratory systems, and stops RC-cells from activating; meaning that ghoul kagunes could no longer work if they breath in the gas. Tsukiyama realizes the danger the group is in as Akira moves to finish off the defenseless ghouls. She aims for Gagi and Guge first, but Naki steps in front, and takes all the damage from her quinque. In pain, Naki regrets never being able to be with Yamori again, and declares that he won't let anyone else he's gotten to know die.

Kaneki vs. Shinohara

Despite still being affected by the gas, Naki charges forward taking the hits from Akira's quinque, and is able to knock her to the ground with a kick. He then takes a bite out of Akira's leg, and pulls on his own back in the hopes of forcing his kagune out. At that point, Amon comes in, and lands a major blow to the right side of Naki's body; knocking him back, and causing the ghoul to bleed out. Gagi and Guge pick up Naki as Tsukiyama orders the group to retreat. The Gourmet ghoul congratulates Naki for his efforts to allow for them to escape the gas, and hopes to himself that Kaneki can hold out for awhile longer.

At Kanou's lab, the battle between centipede Kaneki and Shinohara rages on. The other investigators stand by to watch as they witness a Kakujya-type ghoul in combat for the first time. One notes that allowing for a Kakujya to get close is the biggest problem, but is amazed to see that Shinohara is able to keep up with the ghoul. Another investigator asks if Shinohara can actually win this, which is answered that the Special Class Investigator is known as the Invulnerable Shinohara due to his past achievements in taking out two noteworthy ghouls in the past; Oniyamada and Arata. The investigator states that Shinohara isn't as flashy as Arima, but is still an incredible investigator that will always leave a solid result. Shinohara continues to dodge the attacks from centipede Kaneki until he is finally able to land a hit on the right side of Kaneki's body.

An injured Banjou returns to the group

Kaneki falls to his knees after the hit as the investigators believe that Shinohara had come out the winner. However, Shinohara is shocked to see Kaneki rising to fight once more, which Shinohara figures that the ghoul has another kagune within him providing extra strength. Shinohara then looks at his own arm, and notices that the ghoul had bitten off a chunk of it. At that point, Kaneki moves to attack once more.

Elsewhere in one of the lab's hallways, Tsukiyama and the gas siblings were able to break away from Naki's group as they decide on what they should do next. Tsukiyama states that they should search for Kaneki, but the siblings believe that Banjou should be their first search. Tsukiyama considers that they should split up, but the gas siblings state that if Tsukiyama is truly their ally, they will act as one to find Banjou since they believe that Kaneki has a better shot surviving on his own. Enraged that his plan was rejected, Tsukiyama moves to attack the three gas mask siblings, but is interrupted by Banjou who has arrived before them.

Banjou confronts Tsukiyama for threatening his followers just now, which the Gourmet ghoul attempts to pass off as a joke. Despite still not believing him, Banjou informs the group of the injury he obtained spying on Eto's fight with the One-Eyed sisters. Banjou asks about Kaneki, which Tsukiyama states that they were just about ready to begin searching for him. Banjou then states that they should get going as he's been feeling something bad is about to happen.

Amon realizing that Kaneki defeated Shinohara

At another lab hallway, Amon's unit is on the move toward Shinohara's location with an injured Akira. Akira tries to play off her injury as a joke, but Amon answers that he won't let her make any other rash actions in order to keep her from dying. He then briefly spots Kurona trying to run away with an injured Nashiro, but is unable to catch up to her. Amon gets a glimpse of her ghoul-eye wondering what happened to her as one of his fellow investigators yells to him that they've reached Shinohara's location.

Arriving at the primary lab, Amon spots Shinohara's investigators completely out of breath, and spots the Eye-patch ghoul in the distance. However, upon closer inspection, he sees Shinohara lying unconscious before the ghoul. Enraged, Amon charges toward Kaneki ready to kill him. Kaneki readies his kagune to block the first strike, and is then able to knock Amon back.

Seeing Amon struggling, Akira moves to act as back-up, but is ordered by the other investigators to wait as a wounded investigator will only get in Amon's way. Seeing the battle unfolding before them, the investigators decide that they will be preparing a defence system to contain a ghoul as high as SS-rank. Amon and Kaneki clash once more as the investigator reminds the ghoul of the night that Kaneki cried before him. Amon asks if what Kaneki told him that day was a lie, which the ghoul states that he doesn't remember making such a claim.

Amon calling out to Kaneki in an attempt to bring back the boy's sanity

A flashback occurs as Amon remembers back to a time he was living with his ghoul foster father, Donato. A young Amon looks at his father in shock having realized that his father lied about sending kids away from the facility, and had actually killed the kids just now. Donato then tells Amon that the boy alone will live on to continue following the lie that he created, and tells Amon that the ghouls are what screwed up this world.

Looking at Kaneki, Amon questions why Donato kept him alive compared to the other children, and states to Kaneki that after the boy had let him go, he was the one who would understand Amon's issue the most. However, Kaneki continues to reject the claim, and states that he doesn't remember. Kaneki's attacks begin to overpower Amon, but is suddenly hit by a batch of knives thrown from Suzuya.

Suzuya charges toward Kaneki with his quinque ready. Kaneki dodges the swing, but Suzuya activates the kagune within the quinque, which shoots out and stabs into Kaneki. Amon takes this opportunity to slice a portion of Kaneki's kagune off, but instead of continuing the attack, Amon points his quinque at the downed ghoul, and asks Kaneki if its ok to only be a ghoul. This question finally gets through to Kaneki, who breaks down, and claims that he doesn't want to eat anymore. Kaneki uses this moment of silence to escape the area, which Suzuya begins to chase after him. However, he is ordered by Amon to hold position as getting Shinohara out safely is first priority; leaving Suzuya disappointed.

Not quite sane Kaneki stabs Banjou

Still walking down one of the lab tunnels, Kaneki's gang is still heading to their boss' location. Tsukiyama claims that he can feel Kaneki nearby which Banjou is the first to spot. Kaneki is thankful to be reunited with his comrades, but is seen to still be struggling to control his Kakujya form. Banjou steps towards him to help Kaneki up, which Kaneki thanks him by stabbing Banjou through the chest.

Banjou falls to the ground as the gas mask siblings move in to help him. Kaneki knocks the three siblings back, and kicks away Tsukiyama despite the later ordering Kaneki to return to his senses. Kaneki then looks down and continues to think to himself that he can continue protecting everyone. However, his sanity comes back again, and sees the unconscious Banjou lying on the ground. Kaneki breaks down, and questions to himself why he chose to do certain things if the person he wanted to protect still ended up getting injured. He continues to apologize for his actions as Tsukiyama and the gas siblings watch on.

The group looks down at the unconscious Banjou as they witness his kagune begin to heal the wound made by Kaneki. Tsukiyama explains that his kagune activated the moment it sensed the danger of Banjou possibly dying, and that he has a kagune meant for quick-regeneration. Banjou gets up, and notices the kagune spike sticking out of his back; disappointed that it looks a bit small for him. He also realizes that the kagune healed the wound he obtained from Eto earlier.

A healed Banjou uplifting Kaneki

Kaneki looks toward the healthy Banjou trying to apologize once more, but Banjou states that he understands what Kaneki had been going though. That Kaneki felt the need to get stronger in order to cover everyone's weaknesses, and that Kaneki would always blame himself if one of his followers got hurt. Telling him that he no longer needs to torture himself, Banjou then informs Kaneki that he's alright now, and that he is still his shield. He then states to Kaneki that he needs to be saved first before actually trying to save others.

Back at the main lab, Amon heads over to Shinohara's location hoping that he is still alive. To Amon's delight, Shinohara wakes up claiming that he's fine despite getting roughed up, and bitten in a few places. He then states that it could have been a lot worse since it seemed like the ghoul was resisting the temptation to try to eat him, which catches Amon's attention remembering back to Eye-Patch. Amon next turns to Suzuya who orders the boy to work in pairs from now on, claiming that Suzuya will regret it if something happens to Shinohara. Suzuya plays it off as a joke, which forces Amon to grab the boy's collar out of anger. Suzuya calls Amon a pervert for the action, but he simply lets Suzuya go, and moves on.

Kanou leaving the One-Eyed sisters behind as he heads off with Aogiri Tree

At another location, Kanou, Eto, and Shachi, are seen watching a bunch of monitors showing Amon's recent actions in the lab. Kanou admits to finding Amon to be an interesting subject while Eto is left disappointed that they were unable to recruit Kaneki. However, Eto is thankful that Kanou has decided to cooperate with Aogiri Tree as Kanou is seen disposing the last of the lab's data before the CCG gets their hand on it.

At that point, Kurona enters the room with the injured Nashiro, which Kanou notices are a mess, and orders them to eat something. Kurona then asks Kanou to look at Nashiro, but is told that she has sustained too much damage to fix, and should be let go. Kanou then informs Kurona that she will eventually be able to make many new friends. However, he, Eto, and Shachi, leave through a hidden lab exit; leaving Kurona alone with the dying Nashiro.

Overlooking the city from a cliff, Yomo is seen still carrying the newly rescued Rize; saying to himself that he is now hungry.

Raid on Kanou's Lab Arc Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • For Banjou, as he finally has his kagune active.
    • The reader also learns a lot about Suzuya and the One-Eyed sisters.
  • Arc Villain:
    • The search for Kanou once again runs the plot like the previous arc - but this time Kaneki does actually find him.
    • Aogiri Tree such as Naki group, Shachi, and Eto, act as this for Kaneki as they are also searching for Kanou.
    • For the CCG, the One-Eye Sisters are this to Suzuya, and a case can be made that the crazed Kaneki was this for Amon and Shinohara.
  • Enemy Mine: Tsukiyama and Naki's groups form an alliance in order to team up against Amon and Akira's CCG team.
  • Foreshadowing: Amon's speculation concerning the CCG and the Yasuhisa twins tragedy is the first major clue to the CCG having some kind of Dark Secret, which will become critically important later on.
  • Killed Off for Real: Questionable, but Nashiro of the One-Eyed sisters was pretty much left for dead at the very end. note
  • Next Tier Power-Up: Kaneki's Kakuja ghoul form, which takes on the shape of a centipede.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: Many elements from this arc are adapted in the anime's second season, but are made to fit in with the alternate story. For instance:
    • Instead of taking place inside Kanou's lab, the raid occurs in the ghoul prison Cochlea.
    • Kaneki does not end up meeting Kanou again or discovering Rize is still alive. However, Rize being alive is implied by Eto in episode 4, though she never actually appears.
    • There are two added confrontations between Houji and Tatara, and Shinohara and Ayato. That latter has the Arata armour reacting to the presence of Arata's son, who recognises what remains of his father as well.
    • Tsukiyama does not appear with Naki when he does battle with Akira and Amon.
  • Put on a Bus: After this arc, you never see the One-Eyed sisters, Kurona and Nashiro, again. Until :re in which Kurona and Nashiro (or parts of her) return.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • Madam A. disappears after Kaneki's gang enters the large lab room where Kurona and Nashiro are waiting for their arrival.
    • No one knows what happened to the One-Eyed sisters after Kanou left them behind.
