In the series premiere, Rachel Roth, a teen haunted by dark visions and powers, falls under the wing of Detective Dick Grayson. We also meet Kory Anders and Beast Boy (Gar Logan).

Tropes:

  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: Rachel is terrified of her powers, to the point of insisting Dick lock her up.
  • Character Death: Rachel's mother dies via a bullet to the head from a home intruder.
  • Blatant Lies: Rachel's mother saying she quit smoking and that she's not scared of her daughter.
  • Boom Head Shot: How Rachel's mother gets murdered by an intruder.
  • Broken Pedestal: Dick's description of his previous 'partner' implies this; describing him as a hero he and others once looked up to.
  • Bully Hunter: Implied with one of Rachel's classmates, who stands up to a guy picking on her, but doesn't seem to like Rachel herself that much, as he ignores her in the hall.
  • Get into Jail Free: When Rachel becomes suspicious of the social worker leading her off down a dark alley, she throws a brick at a passing cop car so they'll take her in. Although it enables her to make contact with Dick Greyson, the people pursuing Rachel send in a disguised policeman to get her out.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Rachel wakes up this way from her dream about the death of the Graysons.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Robin vs Mooks.
  • Downer Beginning: The episode and entire series begins with a vision to the Flying Graysons' deaths.
  • Dressed in Layers: Averted; Dick is implied to keep his Robin costume in a retina-locked briefcase in his car.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Despite Robin being incredibly dangerous, the mooks don't take him seriously. Dick does not appreciate this.
  • Faux Fluency: Anna Diop is either amazingly bad at German or learned her lines phonetically.
  • Friend to All Children: A fellow cop notes that Dick has a "thing for helping kids".
  • The Ghost: Batman. He doesn't directly appear, but a criminal questions where he is upon seeing Robin; in a flashback, we see a hand on Dick's shoulder and a voice that is likely his; Dick and Amy discuss Dick's "former partner"; and Dick calls his Porsche, presumably from Bruce, a family heirloom.
  • Hypocrite: Rachel's mother tells her she shouldn't drink coffee, while Rachel tells her mother she shouldn't smoke.
  • I Work Alone: Dick has the reputation in his own department, cold-shouldering the Fair Cop assigned to him. Of course if your last partner was The Godammned Batman and you secretly work at night as a masked vigilante, that's understandable.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Kory wakes up in a car after an accident with people chasing her and no idea who she is or how she got there.
  • Madonna-Whore Complex: Rachel's inner demon slams her just for showing appreciation for a male classmate saving her, calling her "slut".
  • Mugging the Monster:
    • Rachel's mother's killer really picked the wrong person to mess with, as he ends up dead from Rachel's powers.
    • Likewise the man who tries to shoot Kory only to be carbonised along with his mooks.
  • Not Even Bothering with the Accent: The supposedly Austrian receptionist in Vienna speaks flawless German, but without as much as a hint of an Austrian accent, indicating the actress is actually from Germany.
  • Parental Neglect: Rachel's mother forgot to get cream and milk for the house as Rachel reminds her.
  • Pedo Hunt: Robin delivers a Curb-Stomp Battle to some mooks, one of whom abuses his kid.
Robin: You ever touch your kid again, I'll find you!
  • Physical Scars, Psychological Scars: Rachel's mother has a scar on her side that hasn't healed.
  • TV Writers Have No Sense Of Scale: During Kory's introduction - which is 'Outside Vienna' - we get to see a typical Austrian/German city sign, showing the end of one city and noting the distance to the next. The issue here is that the 'next' city over is apparently 852 kilometers (about 530 miles) away. Which would put it into a neighboring country, given that Austria has only a length of almost 600 km (372 mi) and a maximum width of 280 km (173 mi).
  • Sleep Deprivation: Rachel's mother no longer sleeps due to her daughter's demons.
  • Slut-Shaming: Rachel gets slut-shamed by a boy harassing her and by her demons for liking a boy for defending her.
  • Superhero Paradox: No-one in the Detroit police or civil administration is happy there's a masked vigilante in town because of all the other trouble they attract.
  • There Are No Coincidences: Rachel gets arrested and interrogated by Detective Greyson, whom she recognises from her dream as "the boy from the circus".
  • Trivial Title: The eponymous Titans are not yet a team.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Kory bluntly tells the gangster she was apparently hooked up with that yes, it was.
  • Wife-Basher Basher: A variant. The reason Dick went out as Robin again for the first time in a long time was because charges were dismissed against a child abuser.
