Recap / Tiny Toon Adventures S 1 E 37 Career Oppor Toon Ities

Go To

The 37th episode of the first season of Tiny Toon Adventures (and 37th overall).

The episode opens as Buster explains that it's great to have fun after school, but what happens when you find that "fun costs dough"? It may be time to get a part-time job. Thus, Buster declares it to be "Get-A-Job Day" on Tiny Toon Adventures.

Short One: "Buster's Guide to Part-Time Jobs"

Buster guides Babs (and the audience) through the process of getting a part-time job. After an unsuccessful attempt to apply to become President of the United States, Babs settles for working alongside Buster at the local Weenie Burger restaurant. Buster's advice on dealing with rowdy customers falls apart when their customer winds up being Montana Max, whose typical Jerkass behavior tests Buster and Babs' patience until they've had enough and kick the unruly Max out. This winds up getting them fired and thus, they take up mowing their neighbors' lawns.

Short Two: "Working Pig"

Hamton gets a job at the local mall, but in order to get promoted to his preferred shopping department, vacuum cleaner sales, he must first make a successful sale at the toy department. This is easier said than done when his customer turns out to be Elmyra, who can't decide what she wants to buy. As Elymra bounces from one buying opportunity to another, inadvertently wreaking havoc all the way, Hamton tries his best to remain patient with her and secure that sale that'll get him to vacuum cleaner sales.

Short Three: "Falling to Pizzas"

It's lunchtime in ACME Acres, and Calamity Coyote finds that the local pizza parlor, Bombino's Pizza, is having a sale on pizza by the slice. However, Calamity is flat-broke, so he resorts to attempting to snatch the pizza being delivered by Bombino's pizza delivery boy, Little Beeper.

This episode provides examples of:

Overall:

  • Credits Gag: Don't Miss Our Next Show: It's actually entertaining.
  • Instant Home Delivery: In the third wraparound, Buster and Babs order a pizza which comes a second later, which makes sense since the delivery boy is Road Runner's Junior Counterpart, Little Beeper.
Buster: What took you so fast?
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The Bombino's Boss, Weenie Burger Boss, and the ACME Mall Boss, respectively. While he isn't seen much, the Bombino's Boss treats Little Beeper with respect, and even Calamity by giving him a free pizza slice when Calamity fails to be one of the ten people to get a free pizza slice. The Weenie Burger Boss is very ill-tempered and fires Buster and Babs for kicking out a very disruptive Montana Max, and while the ACME Mall Boss is much less of a pompous jerk than the Weenie Burger boss, even going as far as to promise Hamton a promotion to rug shampooer salesman if he succeeds, he still threatens to fire Hamton if he fails to satisfy his first customer.
  • Thick-Line Animation: Being one of the earliest episodes in production order animated by Wang Film Productions, it's rather pronounced here. Later Wang episodes in the season soften the lines quite a bit.
  • Three Shorts

Buster's Guide to Part-Time Jobs:

  • Absurdly-Long Limousine: Monty has one with a built-in swimming pool.
  • Asshole Victim: Monty really deserved what he got.
  • Bad Boss: Buster and Babs' boss at Weenie Burger, who is very ill-tempered and ultimately fires them for kicking out a very disruptive customer.
  • Burger Fool: Buster and Babs get a job at Weenie Burger (which is named Big Weenie in this short).
  • Hate Sink: Max, ever so much. He really has his karmic retribution coming to him at the end.
  • Kick the Dog: Max makes Babs fix him one meal at Weenie Burger, only to tell her that he's changed his mind and wants another complicated meal just to give her more work. To top it off, Max throws his skateboard over the counter and makes Babs slip on it.
  • Nemesis as Customer: When Montana Max is a customer at Weenie Burger, Buster and Babs try their best to serve him and still follow Weenie Burger's policy ("Service With a Smile" no matter how much of an obnoxious jerk the customer is), but Monty continually gives the two bunnies trouble. Eventually, Buster and Babs decide to get back at Monty by kicking him out of Weenie Burger, which gets them fired (Buster describes this as "the best time to quit your job").
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Buster and Babs getting fired for kicking Monty out of Weenie Burger. Monty was the one who was being disruptive and instigating the brawl between he and the bunnies, but the Bad Boss apparently only sees loss of business from Monty being (justifiably) kicked out and fires Buster and Babs.
  • The Noisy Straw: Montana Max's "large soda" consists of a cup of ice with a single drop of soda in it, which explains why they always make that horrid slurping noise.
  • This Means War!: Buster stresses that Babs should always give their customers service with a smile no matter how how obnoxious they are being, but after Max sends Babs and Buster flying with his skateboard...
    Babs: Service? With a smile?
Buster: No, now it's personal. Let's get 'em!
  • The Un-Smile: Buster and Babs give grotesquely huge, fake smiles to Monty right before they pay him back for his obnoxiousness.

Working Pig:

  • Bad Boss: Subverted, Hamton's boss at the mall is a lot less of a pompous jerk than the Weenie Burger boss, but he still tells Hamton that Hamton will be fired the first time Hamton fails a customer.
  • Here We Go Again!: After successfully selling something to Elmyra and getting the promotion to vacuum cleaner sales, Hamton discovers that he has to help Elmyra again in choosing a rug shampoo-er. Hamton...doesn't take it very well.
  • Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: The Presto-Change-o and Muffy Smuff toys Hamton shows to Elmyra.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • "How about a Debby-Drooly Doll? Mine had an accident." (Elmyra holds up some rags that vaguely resemble a doll)
    • "Oh, Mr. Salespig! Somehow I got red crayon all over my house, I need a rug shampoo-er." (Note that Elmyra only had the single crayon.)
  • Sanity Slippage: Hamton veers on the edge of this throughout the short before shooting off the edge when faced with helping Elmyra a second time.
  • Squashed Flat: Elmyra inadvertently runs over Hamton in a transformed Presto-Change-o toy twice.
  • This Means War!: Subverted; Hamton gets so frustrated with Elmyra that he nearly shoots her with a toy laser gun. However, he realizes that doing this will likely cost him his job and that, regardless, the customer is always right (even when they are befuddled ditzes). This pays off when it turns out that Elmyra had finally decided to buy a single red crayon as he was taking aim at her.
  • Walking Disaster Area: Elmyra, even more so than usual. You'd think she was Dizzy Devil as she walks into the store, and she breaks something pretty much every time she touches it throughout.
  • Your Head Asplode: Hamton during his Sanity Slippage at the episode's end.

Falling to Pizzas:

  • Benevolent Boss: While we don't see much of Little Beeper's boss, he appears to be much nicer than the bosses of the previous two segments.
  • Bland-Name Product: Little Beeper works for Bombino's Pizza, a spoof of Domino's Pizza.
  • Body Pocket: Calamity, who wears neither a shirt nor pants, pulls these out to indicate that he doesn't have any money to pay for pizza from Bombino's.
  • Butt-Monkey: Calamity Coyote.
  • Canis Latinicus: Calamity and Beeper are named Hungrious for Pizzius and Pizzius Deliverius, respectively.
  • Circling Birdies: After Calamity gets run over by the ten customers who got free pizza slices, pizza slices spin around his head.
  • Crush Parade: When Calamity tries to get a free slice of pizza from Bombino's, he gets run over by Plucky, Hamton, Shirley, Fifi, Furrball, Dizzy, Monty, Elmyra, Gogo, and Sweetie.
  • Fire-Breathing Diner: Calamity after eating a very spicy piece of pizza.
  • Mirrors Reflect Everything: Calamity buys the ACME Wizzo Laser and plans to zap Beeper with it. He accidentally zaps the ACME Vanity Mirror he bought from a previous attempt to distract Beeper, causing the mirror to reflect the laser and zap him.
  • The Runt at the End: Bombino offers a free slice of pizza to the next ten customers. Calamity is trampled by Plucky, Hamton, Shirley, Fifi, Furrball, Dizzy, Monty, Elmyra and Gogo. When it looks like Calamity still has a chance, Sweetie runs over him as well. To add insult to injury, the above mentioned trample him again while running the other way.
  • 30 Minutes, or It's Free!: Little Beeper is the pizza delivery boy for Bombino's Pizza. Because he has Super-Speed, Bombino's policy is "Delivery in 2 Minutes or Your Money Back".
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Calamity does get a free slice of pizza at the end...too bad it was a slice of spicy pepper pizza, though.
