Recap / Tiny Toon Adventures S 1 E 35 A Ditch In Time

Go To

The thirty-fifth episode of Tiny Toon Adventures.

Plucky is ashamed of himself for always waiting until the last minute to do his homework. One night, he has to study for two tests and a history report, all of which are due the next morning. As midnight strikes, Plucky decides to take a nap, only to sleep until 7:00 A.M. the next morning. One of Plucky's assigments is to read about H.G. Wells, the novellist who wrote The Time Machine. This gives Plucky the idea to skip school and build a time machine and travel back in time to Friday so he can do his homework. Just then, a time machine appears in his bedroom. The time traveller is himself from four days in the future. The present-day Plucky is not amused, and thinks the future Plucky is a disguised Buster. Plucky's future self explains to his present self that he spent the past four days building a time machine from his clock, couch, bathtub and lawn mower, then he travelled back four days to show him. As confused as the present-day Plucky is, he decides to travel back to Friday with his future self, who reminds him that since he built the machine, he has to do the homework. Plucky's present-day self agrees, and together, the two travel back to Friday. When the two Pluckys arrive at last Friday, Plucky's present-day self goes back on his word and leaves his future self to do his homework while he shows the time machine to Buster and Babs. Plucky's future self suddenly realizes he's been had by his present-day counterpart.

Back in ACME Acres in the present day, Buster and Babs arrive at ACME Looniversity, relieved they finally got a scene in the episode. Plucky shows up, much to their ire, and tells them he has something to show them. Buster tells Plucky that it's time for them to go to school, but Plucky insists on showing them the time machine, and drags them to it. Babs doesn't believe the time machine really works, so Plucky tells her and Buster to hop on board so he can take them for a ride in it. Buster suddenly worries that they might be making a big mistake. Babs tells Buster that it's more than a mistake; it's an adventure. After the two rabbits hop on board, Plucky starts up the time machine and takes them to the fourth dimension. During their travel, the time machine malfunctions and sends them too far back in time.

In the second act, as the time machine continues to malfunction, Plucky falls out of it and lands in a prehistoric ACME Acres, before it was officially called ACME Acres. There, he meets the prehistoric ancestor of Montana Max, who whacks him into the air with his club. Meanwhile, Buster's prehistoric ancestor brings in carrots, which Babs' prehistoric ancestor slices as Hamton's prehistoric ancestor cleans a rock. Buster' preshistoric ancestor tells Babs and Hamton's prehistoric ancestors that they need someone to bring everyone to where they live so they can be safe and share their food. Hamton's prehistoric ancestor decides they need a headstrong leader, just as Plucky lands in his bucket. Buster, Babs, and Hamton's prehistoric ancestors think that Plucky is a gift from the Gods, and they bow to him. Plucky decides to take advantage of Buster, Babs, and Hamton's prehistoric ancestors' kindly behavior.

Meanwhile, Buster and Babs continue travelling through time on the time machine as Plucky impresses the citizens of the prehistoric ACME Acres with modern-day technology. Buster's prehistoric ancestor then tells Plucky that he wants to give the place he lives in a name, and Plucky's just the duck to do it. Plucky decides to name the prehistoric paradise "Pluckyland", but Babs and Hamton's prehistoric ancestors dislike the name. Plucky then tells them that ACME Acres is a dumb name. Babs and Plucky's prehistoric ancestors like the name "ACME Acres", and decide to call the place they live in that. Plucky ends up regretting putting that idea into their heads.

As Buster and Babs continue travelling through time, the time machine runs out of gas and lands in ACME Acres in the medieval times. There, they meet Shirley the Loon's medieval ancestor, who is tied to a tree. Buster rescues her, and asks her if she knows anything that makes fire to put in the time machine. Shirley's medieval ancestor then points out a dragon that resembles Foghorn Leghorn, who chases Buster. Buster hides in a lake, but the dragon uses his fire breath to extinguish the water. Babs then dresses like a clown and extinguishes the dragon's fire with a bottle of seltzer. With the dragon unconcious, Babs uses his fire-breathing fuel to refuel the time machine, and she and Buster travel through time on it.

Back at the prehistoric ACME Acres, Monty's prehistoric ancestor is shocked to see all the citizens outside his mansion. He claims it as his own, which Buster's prehistoric ancestor informs Plucky of. Plucky tells Monty's prehistoric ancestor to leave him and the citizens alone, but Monty's prehistoric ancestor orders Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor to eat Plucky. Just as Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor is about to eat Plucky, Buster and Babs appear in the time machine. Plucky is happy to see them, then pushes them aside and starts up the time machine just as Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor grabs it. Monty's prehistoric ancestor is shocked when he sees this, as is Buster.

The time machine takes Plucky and Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor back to ACME Acres in the present day. Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor tosses the time machine into Plucky's pond and runs into ACME Acres, with Plucky realizing he just created a dinosaur-sized catastrophe.

In the third act, a squirrel escapes from Elmyra's house. Elmyra begs for the squirrel to come back, then sees Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor rampaging through ACME Acres. She now has her heart set on making him her pet, and chases after him with a butterfly net. As she does this, Plucky struggles to get the time machine to work again.Back in the Prehistoric ACME Acres, Babs is angry at Plucky for ditching her and Buster. Buster and Babs then meet their prehistoric ancestors and tell them the truth about Plucky. Buster and Babs' prehistoric ancestors vow to get their revenge on Plucky if they ever see him again.

Back in the present-day ACME Acres, Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor continues rampaging through the city, when Elmyra catches up to him. She hugs his foot, and when he tries to shake her off, he backs into a mortar filled with cement at a construction site. Elmyra tries to wash it off with water from a nearby hydrant, but this causes the cement to harden.Back in the Prehistoric ACME Acres, Buster and Babs tell their prehistoric ancestors about modern technology. As the four rabbits eat a roasted carrot, Buster and Babs decide to help their prehistoric ancestors get back at Monty's prehistoric ancestor.

The next morning, Monty's prehistoric ancestor wakes up to find Buster and Babs' prehistoric ancestors trashing his mansion. Buster and Babs' prehistoric ancestors tell him that since he destroyed ACME Acres, they're going to live at his mansion now. Monty's prehistoric ancestor restores the prehistoric ACME Acres to its former glory, and Buster and Babs congratulate their prehistoric ancestors for saving it.Back in the present-day ACME Acres, Plucky dries out his time machine, and Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor runs up to him. Elmyra chases after him, holding hedge clippers, and wanting to give him a manicure. Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor tells Plucky he wants to go back to his own time, and promises to be good if Plucky brings him back there. Plucky likes this idea, and sends them both back to the prehistoric ACME Acres just in time.

Back in the prehistoric ACME Acres, Buster and Babs fear they may never make it back to the present time, when their prehistoric ancestors, as well as those of the rest of the citizens of ACME Acres walk up to them with crowns and thrones. Buster's prehistoric ancestor crowns them their leaders. Babs cries hysterically upon hearing this, when Plucky and Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor return. Plucky assures the prehistoric citizens of ACME Acres that he has tamed Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor and returned to rule, but the prehistoric citizens toss their fruit and vegetables at him for being a lousy leader.

Buster, Babs, and Plucky return to Saturday night, where Plucky's future self tells his present-day counterpart that he finished the homework in time for school tomorrow. As he takes his time machine back, Plucky finds a note in his folder that says, DEAR PLUCKY, SUCKER! Love, Plucky., realizing he's been had by his future self. Buster and Babs tell Plucky they hope he's learned his lesson, and before they leave, he tells them he certainly has; don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, cause' it's just a matter of time.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All Cavemen Were Neanderthals: The prehistoric ancestors of the cast have the typical eyebrow ridges and sloped postures.
  • An Aesop: Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today, cause' it's just a matter of time.
  • Bamboo Technology: Plucky builds a fully functional time machine from his clock, couch, bathtub, and lawn mower.
  • Construction Zone Calamity: Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor falls into a mortar filled with cement when Elmyra chases him.
  • Credits Gag: Any similarity between this cartoon and the original script is purely coincidental.
  • Dirty Coward: When Buster and Babs arrive to save Plucky in the time machine, Plucky merely pushes them aside, takes the time machine, and escapes back to the present, leaving Buster and Babs stranded in prehistoric time.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Plucky steals his future self's time machine and goes on a joyride with it, going back on his deal with his future self and leaving him to do his homework. Plucky's future self gets back at him near the end of this episode by assuring Plucky he did his homework, only to leave him a note that says, DEAR PLUCKY, SUCKER! Love, Plucky.
  • Floating Clocks: The time travel sequences include not only clocks and calendars but also Industrial Light & Magic invoices.
  • Idea Bulb: Plucky gets one when he gets the idea to skip school so he can build a time machine and travel back in time to do his homework. It appears broken at the top because he fell on his head before he got the idea.
  • Identical Grandson: In the past, Plucky meets the prehistoric ancestors of his friends (though not his own ancestor for some reason). While in Medieval ACME Acres, Buster and Babs meet Shirley's ancestor, who not only looks exactly like her, but also talks in the same Valley Girl accent.
  • Produce Pelting: Plucky tricks the prehistoric ancestors of the show's cast into thinking he is their new leader. When Buster and Babs tell the truth about Plucky to them, they toss their fruit and vegetables at him when he returns.
Plucky: Yesterday's leader, today's tossed salad.
  • Ridiculous Procrastinator: Plucky, which sets the episode's plot in motion.
  • Stable Time Loop: Plucky wants to name the place soon to be ACME Acres after himself, but the others reject his choice of "Pluckyland". Plucky then says that they can't just call it something dumb like ACME Acres. The others like the sound of it and decide to name it that.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: The prehistoric ancestors of the show's cast are convinced that Plucky is a being sent from the sky to be their leader, and Plucky takes advantage of their kindly nature.
  • Tempting Fate: Near the beginning of the episode, Babs claims that she'll scream if she sees Plucky again. When Plucky shows up next to her, she screams.
  • Time Travel Episode: Plucky builds a time machine and travels back to a prehistoric ACME Acres in this episode.
  • Time Traveler's Dinosaur: Plucky invents a time machine to travel back in time and do his homework ahead of time, since he always waits until the last minute to do his homework. When he tests the time machine out, he travels back to prehistoric times. When he travels back to ACME Acres in the present day, he accidentally takes Dizzy Devil's dinosaur ancestor with him. Dizzy's dinosaur ancestor terrorizes ACME Acres until Elmyra Duff terrorizes him, at which point he begs for Plucky to take him back to his home time period.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball
  • Wet Cement Gag: When Elmyra chases Dizzy's prehistoric ancestor, he falls into a mortar filled with cement. When Elmyra tries to wash it off with water from a hydrant, it causes the cement to harden.
