Recap / Time Trax S2E3 "A Close Encounter"

Go To

SELMA picks up a signal from an inbound spacecraft that belongs to the Procardians, an alien race that has made contact with humans in the 22nd century. Darien is surprised, since Procardians haven't officially been to Earth, and their delegation is expected to arrive within a few years in his own time. The ship crash-lands in the woods near a small town. Two brothers, hunting in the woods, witness the crash and see a strange glowing humanoid figure. They threaten it with their rifles, but the figure raises its hands and fires a blast of energy that knocks one of the brothers into a coma. Darien arrives to the crash site and finds a Procardian boy. While the Procardian is unable to speak English, he does understand the language, while SELMA acts as a translator for his speech to Darien. The boy explains that his people visited Earth several years ago on a scouting mission but found humans far too violent and dangerous to interact with. Unfortunately, a girl, his mate, was accidentally left behind. He stole a ship to come find her. When asked what she looks like, the boy explains that Procardians don't age gradually the way humans do. They change in phases, at which point it's almost impossible to identify an individual, and his mate was approaching her next phase when she was abandoned. The boy is able to dampen his glow to appear human, and he and Darien stay at a local hotel, owner by a middle-aged couple and their mute daughter. Meanwhile, the brother of the comatose hunter gathers a possy to scour the woods for the creature that hurt his brother. At some point, the stress causes the Procardian boy to change to a teenager in a matter of seconds. Darien figures out that the owners' daughter is, in fact, the missing Procardian girl (pretending to be mute to avoid sounding alien). The boy gets angry at Darien delaying their meet-up and knocks him out with the same energy blast. SELMA is able to revive him, and Darien uses the same method to revive the comatose hunter. Just as the posse closes in on the two Procardian lovers, Darien appears with the brother and explains that he's working for SETI and that this has been a big misunderstanding. The crowd goes home, and Darien explains that the couple can either stay on Earth or go to the future in order to wait for their own kind to arrive. They opt for the latter, so he sends them to the 22nd century.

  • First Contact: The official first contact happened when humans received a message from Procardia in the 22nd century with a delegation expected to arrive within a few years. However, as Darien learns, Procardians have been to Earth before on a scouting expedition, finding the 20th century humans wanting.
  • Human Aliens: Procardians look almost identical to humans. Except they naturally glow, although they can turn that off. They are able to float and have a defense mechanism that involves them raising their arms and firing a blast of energy that knocks out the threat. Instead of growing through their lives, they grow in phases, meaning they remain at a particular age for several years before growing to the next stage of life in a matter of seconds. This can make it difficult to identify someone if they've changed since they were last seen.
  • Starfish Language: Procardian language sounds like a mangled version of autotune. Human are unable to reproduce their sounds and vice versa. The one time the Procardian girl says "I love you" in English, it sounds very creepy. It is, however, possible to learn to understand each other's languages, as Darien picks up a few alien words by the end of the episode, and both Procardians are able to understand English easily.
  • Time Travel: Given the Procardians' surprise at learning about the existence of time travel, it's very likely that their people have never developed the technology, which means they aren't that far ahead of humans, except in the area of space travel. On the other hand, these are 20th century Procardians. Who knows what strides their scientists have made over the next 200 years?
