Early one morning at Knapford Station, Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel have one last journey to make before they can take a break, when a Lady pushing a baby carriage with a crying Baby inside walks onto the platform. Annie and Clarabel are annoyed by the Baby's crying, and think that the Lady and the Baby aren't trying to get on board. Thomas is amazed that something as small as a baby could make such a loud noise. As the Lady tries to calm the Baby down, a Workman runs up to her and hands her a train ticket. Sure enough, the Lady with the Baby does want to travel onboard Thomas' branch line, and gets inside Annie, much to her and Clarabel's shock. Annie tells Thomas that she doesn't think babies like travelling on trains, and Clarabel isn't looking forward to the journey at all as Thomas sets off.

Not long after Thomas starts moving, the Baby stops crying and falls asleep. Annie is relieved, and figures the Baby was probably just tired. Annie then tells Clarabel that she thinks the Baby likes her, and Clarabel says that she's good with children as well. Thomas then tells them that since he's pulling them, it might be him that the Baby likes.

Unfortunately, whatever had stop the Baby crying didn't last too long. When Thomas stops at Dryaw Station to pick up and drop off passengers, the Baby wakes up and starts crying again. Bertie overhears and asks Thomas if he's crying because he lost another race. Thomas tells Bertie that it isn't him who's crying, but rather, the Baby onboard his train. Toby arrives with Henrietta, and asks Thomas what the awful noise is. Henrietta realizes that there is a baby onboard Thomas' train, and asks Thomas if anyone tried singing a lullably. Annie and Clarabel like this idea, and they sing a lullaby together. Unfortunately, this only makes the Baby cry louder, much to the disdain of the other passengers. Thomas sets off just as Annie and Clarabel finish their lullaby, and the Baby stops crying and goes back to sleep.

Annie and Clarabel think it's themselves who stopped the baby's crying, which Thomas finds funny. Thomas soon comes to a red signal, where Percy is pulling a train of tankers. As Thomas stops to let Percy pass, he and Percy whistle to each other. Unfortunately, the Baby wakes up and starts crying again. Annie and Clarabel sing their lullaby again, which makes the Baby cry harder, much to the disdain of the other passengers. The signal soon turns green and Thomas sets off again. Thomas then tells Annie and Clarabel that it isn't their singing that's calming the Baby, it's him pulling them.

Every time Thomas stops at a station or a red signal, the same thing happens; the Baby wakes up and starts crying again. As he drops the other passengers off at a station, Annie questions why everyone except the Lady with the Baby is getting off.

Thomas soon comes to Ffarquhar Station, the last station on his journey, and Annie and Clarabel hope the Lady with the Baby will get off there. Fortunately, she does, and asks the Stationmaster to help her carry her baby carriage. Fortunately, the Stationmaster does so. Annie and Clarabel are relieved to be away from the Lady with the Baby as Thomas sets off again.

Thomas turns around on the loop, ready for his return journey to Knapford. Thomas hopes the journey back will be a lot more peaceful, but much to his shock, the Lady with the Baby wants to get back onboard his train. Annie and Clarabel are not happy that Baby is still crying, but Thomas tells them that he must still be tired, like they said. Annie questions how the Baby could possibly still be tired at a time like this. Thomas sets off, and the Baby calms down and goes back to sleep.

Thomas suddenly has an idea; since the Baby wakes up and cries every time he stops, he decides not to stop at all. Annie and Clarabel find this a horrible idea, as he would put his passengers in danger and get in trouble with Sir Topham Hatt. Thomas realizes that Annie and Clarabel are right and decides not to go with his idea after all. As such, he stops at every station, with the Baby crying every time he stops.

Thomas eventually makes it back to Knapford Station, and everyone is exhausted. As the Baby wakes up and starts crying again, Annie and Clarabel are relieved their journey is over and they can go to the sidings to rest for an hour before their next journey. Sir Topham Hatt says hello to the Baby, who is still crying. As the Lady picks up the Baby, Thomas sees that she's trying desparately to get him to go back to sleep. He suddenly has an idea, and asks Sir Topham Hatt if he could miss his break today. Sir Topham Hatt asks him why, and Thomas tells him that he'd like to make a special journey without stopping so both the Baby and his mother can get some much-needed rest. Annie and Clarabel are shocked, and Clarabel asks Thomas what if it doesn't work. Thomas tells her it did before, and Sir Topham Hatt finds this a wonderful idea. He gives Thomas special permission to take the journey.

The Lady and her Baby get back onboard Annie, and Thomas sets off. It isn't long before the Baby stops crying and goes back to sleep, much to Annie and Clarabel's relief. On his journey, Thomas comes across Toby and Bertie, and reminds them to be quiet so they can let the Baby sleep. Soon, both the Baby and his mother are asleep.

When Thomas returns to Knapford Station, Albert, one of the workmen, is waiting for him. He thanks Thomas for looking after the Lady and the Baby all morning, revealing them to be his wife and son. As Albert pulls the Baby's carriage out of Annie, he tells Thomas that this is probably the longest he or his mother have slept in days. As the Mother awakens and gets off Annie, Albert tells Thomas that he and his wife haven't even named their baby yet, as they've all been very tired. Thomas tells Albert he isn't surprised, and never knew just how demanding babies are. Sir Topham Hatt walks in, congratulates Thomas for a job well done, and gives Albert a week off so he and his wife can look after their son. Albert thanks Sir Topham Hatt, and decides that today will be the day they name their son. He asks his wife if she agrees, and she does. She decides to name her son "Thomas", after the engine who looked after him. Thomas is happy, and Albert's wife thanks him for looking after her and her son. Thomas tells her he was happy to help as they leave for their home. He then apologizes to Annie and Clarabel for making them miss their break, but he felt it was worth it to help out a friend. He asks them if they agree, but they don't respond. Sir Topham Hatt tells them that they've fallen asleep, and sure enough, they have.
