Recap / Thems Fightin Herds Prologue

Go To

Fœnum's leaders gather in the City of Reine for an emergency meeting. A young zebra foal named Ribbon recounts to the Council of Ungulates how she was chased and cornered by a group of ferocious creatures who demand her to take them to The Prophet's Key. Before the sun dissipates the ghostly wolves, one warns that The Predators will return. With Ribbon's tale being all the proof they need, Anga calls for all nations of Fœnum to decide for one of their own to become their Key Seeker. Only the strongest will truly be Fœnum's Champion.

Tropes:

  • All Myths Are True: The fact that the Predators bring up the Prophet's Key prove that the legends surrounding The Horned Prophet are true.
  • Cosmopolitan Council: The council is made up of every ungulate leader or elder in Fœnum.
  • Cue the Sun: The rising sun is what saves Ribbon from the pack of wolves in the game's prologue, which disintegrates their forms.
  • Downer Beginning: The story starts off pretty gloomy, with Ribbon nearly getting killed and the council finding out The Predators are about to return.
  • Fantastic Slurs: One predator calls Ribbon a "Grass Eater", which is apparently a slur towards ungulates, judging by everyone's reaction.
  • Foreshadowing: More like a passive reference, but one of the species referenced by Anga when she calls the nations of Fœnum to decide on a Champion were the "Goatanis of The Islands". Shortly after Chapter 1 was released, we would get a Goatani Champion (kind of) as the first DLC character. In fact, any of the species mentioned could potentially be a future fighter.
  • Gasp!: The council's response when Ribbon describes the Predators' appearances and on hearing the phrase "Grass Eater".
  • Innocently Insensitive: Ribbon describes the wolves' coats as long, thick, and shaggy almost like a bison's. An offcreen character says "Why I never!". (This line was rewritten in a later update, along with half of the prologue.)
  • Myth Prologue: Downplayed, but we are given a few mentions of The Predator's banishment by the Horned Prophet, as well as exposition on the Prophet's Key in some dialogue.
  • Run or Die: Ribbon's reasons for running away are perfectly understandable.
  • Savage Wolves: After Ribbon was chased down by a pack of Fluffers, they demanded she take them to the Prophet's Key. Being that the Key has been lost for generations, little imagination is needed to guess what they would have done to her when she couldn't fulfill that task.
  • Serendipitous Survival: Ribbon survives her encounter when the sun's light disintegrates the Predators surrounding her.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Chief Anga lampshades that no nation in Fœnum can agree on a single Champion, so degrees that everyone choose one of their own and battle it out themselves to see who is the most worthy.
  • We Will Meet Again: As it fades away, the last wolf tells Ribbon The Predators will return and they will be... hungry.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: Kalimat calls every ungulate fools if they ignore his warnings about the Predator's return.
