"There has to be an end, Scully."
Written by Chris Carter
Directed by Kim Manners

"There's been a crash in Oregon. An alien ship has collided with a military aircraft. Recovery is all-important. It's Roswell and Corona all over again - 50 years later. It's our chance to rebuild the project."
Cigarette Smoking Man

Alien activity in Oregon brings Mulder and Scully back to the site of their first investigation together.

Tropes:

  • Anywhere but Their Lips: Mulder kisses Scully's cheek while they cuddle in his bed.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The Alien Bounty Hunter easily completes his mission, captures all the abductees including Mulder, repairs his ship and takes off before the heroes can so much as get to him. As the tractor beam takes them all up he even gives Mulder a rare Psychotic Smirk of triumph.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It is believed at first Scully is the one in danger of being abducted again when abductees start going missing, but it turns out the aliens want Mulder due to the events of the Sixth Extinction trilogy.
  • Book Ends: Mulder and Scully investigate in Bellefleur, Oregon, which was the place of their very first assignment. They see a faded X sign on the road, which Mulder painted there to mark an anomalous electrical disturbance back then. They also meet some of the same people, some of which are multiple alien abductees. In both episodes, Mulder and Scully have a personal conversation in a hotel room — in the pilot Mulder tells her "nothing else matters to [him]" except his quest, while this instance has him insisting that the quest isn't worth sacrificing her health and happiness.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: What CSM has been reduced to by the time of this episode.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Krycek and Marita finally turn on CSM after everything he has done to them.
  • Enemy Mine: Krycek once again sides with our heroes over his sinister employer. It's implied this is brought on by a mixture of Evil Has Standards and revenge.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Despite everything else he is, CSM accepts his fate calmly before Krycek pushes him down the stairs.
"As you do to Mulder and to me... you do to all of mankind, Alex."
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Mulder has to choose between saving Scully and finding the truth about the Government Conspiracy.
  • Intimate Healing: Mulder spoons Scully to warm her up when she's not feeling well.
  • Karmic Death: CSM finally has the tables turned on him by a vengeance seeking Krycek and Marita, who double cross him after shattering his hopes of rebuilding The Conspiracy.
  • Killed Off for Real: The Cigarette Smoking Man seemingly at the time. He is no longer the threat going forward or seen again until the series finale.
  • "Last Supper" Steal: The gathering in Skinner's office looks like the famous Last Supper, though they are standing, not sitting.
  • Missing Time: Mulder and Scully have a missing time experience on what they subsequently realize is the exact same spot they had one in the first episode.
  • Morning Sickness: Implied to be the reason she wasn't feeling well and went to Mulder for some Intimate Healing.
  • Myth Arc: Alien abductees are back, CSM, Krycek, Marita, the Lone Gunmen and Alien Bounty Hunter... they all make an appearance.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mulder has a silent one when he sees the Alien Bounty Hunter enter the tractor beam with him, the latter sporting a Psychotic Smirk. It's this moment that makes him realise what will happen to him now.
  • Put on a Bus: CSM and Marita Covarrubias until the series finale.
  • Series Fauxnale: Mulder and Scully return to the site of their first case together, pretty much every major character gets an appearance, and the episode ends in true X-Files fashion in which Mulder is abducted and Scully finds out she's pregnant without conclusion or explanation for either. A lot of fans treat it this way, since many regard season's 8 and 9 as subpar to the rest of the series.
  • Some Kind of Force Field: The alien ship has a forcefield that causes trespassers to float and rapidly vibrate uncontrollably. This only happens because normal people are the ones trying to enter. For those with abnormal brain activity induced by the involvement of aliens, they can enter, although the vibrating effect is still present. This can be seen in the page image with Mulder.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Scully finds out she's pregnant immediately after Mulder is Put on a Bus.
  • Wham Episode: CSM is seemingly Killed Off for Real, Mulder is taken by aliens and Scully is pregnant.

"We will find him. I have to."
