Recap / The Wonder Years S 03 E 14 St Valentines Day Massacre

Go To

It's Valentines Day, and although Winnie had told Paul that she likes Kevin, she refuses to talk to Kevin after he had found out. Meanwhile, Paul is still trying to get back together with Carla. In class, Craig Hobson criticizes them. Paul decides to make a Valentine for Carla, and that's all it takes to win her back. Kevin decides to do the same, writing "Dear Valentine, I'm sorry". Winnie's friends won't let Kevin give it to her, so Kevin asks a young boy on his way to archery class to deliver the envelope into her locker. However, he misunderstands and puts it in the wrong locker. The locker belongs to Becky Slater, who Kevin had dated and broken up with before. Becky accepts, thinking it is for her. He tries to get to Winnie and straighten things out before she finds out, but is too late. Becky asks Kevin to take her to a dance. Kevin almost tells her who the Valentine is for, before remembering the punch Becky gave him after breaking up, and instead lies about his family hosting a Valentine's cook-out, but Becky believes it and plans to show up.

Kevin finds Winnie and tries to talk again, but Becky once again gets in the way. This time Kevin admits that the Valentine is not for her. Becky gives it back to Kevin, stating that she can take it gracefully. After talking to Winnie again, she tells Kevin that she lied to Paul. She told Paul that she liked somebody else, but when Paul asked who, she said she liked Kevin just to let him down easy, but didn't mean it.

Kevin walks home, heartbroken, while Becky rides her bike down Kevin's path, with intentions to run him over. When the boy who delivered the Valentine card walks in the way, she moves aside and accidentally crashes into Craig, and the two instantly fall for each other. Kevin finds Winnie, who calls him a jerk, but Kevin decides to take a stand and proclaim that he likes her, then asks if she likes him. She then admits that she did tell Paul the truth about liking him. Kevin gives her the Valentine, and since she doesn't have one for him, he decides that they'll share it.

Includes examples of

  • All There in the Script: The name of the seventh grader with the bow and arrow is never mentioned in the episode, but the credits reveal that it is Curtis Hartsell.
  • Call-Back: Kevin keeps having flashbacks to the time Becky kicked his ass for breaking up with her.
  • Dirty Coward: The only reason Kevin doesn't come clean with Becky right away about the mix up with the valentine is because he is terrified that she will beat the shit out of him again.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Unlike the last time, Kevin didn't do anything cruel or abusive towards Becky, and his interactions with her were the result of a mere misunderstanding that he eventually came clean about. Her reaction is to try to run him over with her bicycle.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After a day where Winnie refuses to admit she likes Kevin and refuses to talk to him, Kevin's Valentine for her goes to the wrong girl, and Winnie claims that she lied to Paul about liking Kevin so that Paul wouldn't be hurt by their break-up, Kevin and Winnie finally become a couple when Kevin calls her out and says that he likes her, and she admits that she does like him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Becky may hate Kevin profoundly, but not so much that she'll run over an innocent kid trying to get him.
  • Meet Cute: Becky crashes unto Craig with her bicycle while trying to run Kevin over and it's Love at First Sight for both of them.
  • Pair the Spares: After learning Kevin's Valentine card was not meant for Becky, she ends up in a relationship with Kevin's friend Craig, who had spent the episode being against relationships and been critical of Kevin and Paul over having their respective crushes.
  • Properly Paranoid: Kevin is sure that if he comes clean with Becky about the mix up, she will do something awful to him. He is proven right when she tries to run him over with a bicycle.
  • Shout-Out: When Becky begins her attack run on Kevin, the music on the background comes from The Wizard of Oz, particularly the scene during the tornado when Miss Gulch on her bicycle transforms into the Wicked Witch.
  • Spanner in the Works: Little Curtis keeps unwittingly messing everyone's plans: He delivers Kevin's valentine to Becky's locker, trips him when he is trying to get to Winnie ahead of the gossip, and steps into Becky's path when she's trying to run Kevin over with her bicycle.
