Season One, Episode Three

When Jadis's threat cannot be ignored, Rick tries to send Michonne away, but she refuses to leave without a fight.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Jadis makes another pass at Rick, to his disgust.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Rick is forced to beg and plead for Jadis to not go through with her threat to have the Coalition destroyed.
  • Battle Couple: The climax of the episode sees Richonne back in action for the first time in a long, long time.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Thorne doesn’t care that she and the others needed help, she’s only angry that Michonne and subsequently Rick broke protocol.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: By the end of the episode, Rick mournfully tries to tell Michonne they are over to try to hurt her enough to get her to leave without him.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Michonne kills the walker encroaching on Cleo by tossing the head of the walker she just slayed at its head, destroying it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Jadis mentions the CRM cannot operate within the walls of the Civic Republic itself. World Beyond revealed that the CRM and the Republic itself operate virtually autonomously. The CRM is allowed free rein without the CR’s oversight for ten years after the Fall.
    • Jadis explicitly confirms the Scavengers were CRM trading partners. Back in Season 8's "The Lost and the Plunderers", Simon had expressed curiosity about the helicopter pad, asking just what kind of place it was, which caused Jadis to grow notably apprehensive about answering. Later, Jadis was shown going into her living quarters which were very well-furnished, now explained as being supplied by the vast resources traded to her by the CRM.
    • Jadis says she saved Rick’s life and gave him to the CRM due to owing him for inviting her into the Coalition after the end of the Savior War, and subsequently being one of the few survivors who actually came to trust and befriend her.
    • When Jadis says that Rick is planning to kill her, he says "not today", recalling his famous, defiant threat to Negan in the wake of Abraham and Glenn’s deaths in "Last Day on Earth"/"The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be". It was also reprised for "The First Day of the Rest of Your Life", which also featured Jadis and Rick and Michonne’s most famous declaration of "we’re the ones who live".
    • Jadis says a CRM reclamation team would be sent to wipe out the Coalition in the event of her death. We previously saw one sent to kill Isabelle after she went rogue from the CRM back in the seventh season of Fear the Walking Dead.
    • Beale wields a sword taken from an American Revolution museum. Victor Strand wielded an antique sword during his tenure as leader of the Tower in the seventh season of Fear.
    • Rick tells Jadis that "people are a resource", recalling Negan's mantra as leader of the Saviors.
    • Michonne finds the artist who originally drew her and Judith on the iPhone that she found at Bloodsworth Island in "What We Become". It also calls back to early Season 9 when Jadis was shown to have kill in drawing people from descriptions, which she used to draw many late loved ones of the Coalition like Hershel Greene and Glenn Rhee.
    • Benjiro says that he tried to make portraits of Carl, who died in Season 8's "Honor".
    • Thorne nearly shoots Michonne in a sequence eerily similar to when Shane nearly did the same to Rick back in Season 1’s "Wildfire", the same bloodthirsty grin appearing on her face. Rick himself stops her in Dale’s place.
    • Jadis tries to invite Rick to her place, showing that she still lusts after him. Back in Seasons 7-8, she tried to sleep with him even after being told he was with Michonne, and expressed a desire to sketch a nude art piece of him to keep for herself.
  • Cruel Mercy: Jadis says Rick and Michonne could live their lives together at the CR in peace, but at the cost of never returning home lest she have the Coalition destroyed.
  • Exact Words: Thorne signals Rick to shoot Michonne if she gives the wrong answer as she draws her knife. Little does she know that Rick was clearly getting ready to shoot her if she tried to kill Michonne.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Thorne immediately goes for a drink upon arriving at Rick’s apartment out of stress at her promotion.
  • Rank Up: Thorne is promoted to Command Sergeant Major.
  • The Reveal:
    • Jadis clarifies that the Scavengers became trading partners and contacts of the CRM, getting supplies in exchange for giving A’s or B’s to them.
    • Michonne finds the source of the mysterious drawings of her and Judith on the iPhone she originally found, in the form of an artist who specializes in drawings of people he’s never met.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Michonne is angry with Rick for trying to send her away without him. She can’t even answer if she loves him or not when he asks.
  • Wicked Cultured: Beale shows himself to be well read, acquainted with history and literature.
  • Worthy Opponent: Jadis says she never threatened to wipe out the Coalition when he vowed to escape before because he had no chance of escaping on his own, but now that he’s with Michonne, the pair of them are powerful enough that they may just succeed in their goal. And that is why she’s now threatening them.
