Season 11, Episode 21

When the Coalition prisoners are put to work, a few escapees try to track them down to stage a rescue.

  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Alexandria was converted into another labor camp after Lance conquered it.
  • Behind the Black: Two walkers get the jump on Gabriel and Rosita and somehow outright walk up right next to them.
  • Call-Back:
    • The Commonwealth trooper asks Gabriel to pray with him as he bleeds out, like how the Reaper Nichols requested back in “Hunted”. As this trooper uses his last words to try to repent and help the group, Gabriel obliges his request as opposed to how he killed Nichols for daring to ask him to pray.
    • Alexandria was conquered by Lance at the end of “Acts of God”.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Carol brings up Connie’s getting caught in Alpha’s cave thanks to her back in Season 10’s “Squeeze”.
    • Carol tells Maggie that before the Fall, they never would’ve spoken to each other, recalling Maggie’s famous speech at the end of Season 7 wherein she said the same thing.
    • Daryl interrogates the Commonwealth trooper, and in a stark contrast to how he interrogated Randall in Season 2’s “Judge, Jury, Executioner”, he starts out gentle.
    • Gabriel relates how fear can drive someone into acts of cowardice and terrible things, just like how he related he locked his congregation out at the start of the Fall.
    • Ezekiel lambastes Negan for his atrocities as leader of the Saviors - burning people’s faces with irons, coercing women into glorified prostitution, and massacring his people, specifically recalling the slaughter of the Kingdom militia in Season 8’s “Monsters”.
  • Driven to Suicide: The train operator kills himself, too afraid of him and his family being tortured by the Warden.
  • The Exile: The Coalition prisoners are referred to as “exiles”.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The group somehow allowed the train operator to grab a shiv and it results in him taking his own life.
  • Family of Choice: Carol reminds Maggie of how the group made this after the Fall due to surviving together.
  • The Guards Must Be Crazy: The guard defending Maggie, Rosita and Gabriel in their truck outright falls asleep, and evidently did a piss-poor job restraining their captives’ wrists considering how easily Maggie gets out of hers.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Negan tells Ezekiel that his plan will likely come at the cost of his life.
  • I Have Your Wife: The Commonwealth Warden warns the Coalition residents that they won’t see their kids again if they do not comply with them.
  • It's All My Fault: Maggie and Rosita, the good mothers they are, fruitlessly blame themselves for the capture of their children, despite having had little to no way of fending off Pamela’s lightning strikes.
  • Kick the Dog: A trooper strikes Negan with his weapon when he tries to ask where Annie is.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Few Commonwealth troopers know what “designation two” is, but it means the person sent there is never seen again.
  • Made a Slave: The Coalition residents are put into a labor camp and are all but told they are going to stay this way.
  • Mood Whiplash: Daryl and Connie’s cute moment is interrupted by the train operator threatening to kill himself.
  • Precision F-Strike: Rosita gives a “fuck” when she and Gabriel realize the Commonwealth troopers are in hot pursuit.
  • POW Camp: The Coalition residents are put into one where they are going to do hard labor for the benefit of the Commonwealth, presumably until Pamela sees no further use for them as hostages.
  • Red Shirt: Three Coalition residents try to make a run for it when a trooper is distracted by Negan but are immediately gunned down.
  • Ship Tease: Daryl is obviously affected seeing Connie loaded onto the train and later has a sweet moment with her in which he outright chuckles at her.
  • Undead Child: Maggie encounters one that rattles her enough, making her think of Hershel, that she doesn’t even put it down and simply gets away from it. She’s later forced to put it down when it nearly bites her after she takes down a guard.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The only group members seen in the prison camp are Negan, Annie, Ezekiel, and Kelly, with Gabriel, Rosita and Maggie escaping their confinement. While the children are mentioned to be in a secure location, no other group member appears in this episode - no Diane, Magna, or Princess. Virgil is still absent as well, but he’s been missing since Part 1.
  • The Worf Effect: This episode confirms that virtually every member of the Coalition, from Negan to Maggie, was felled by Pamela’s special forces.
  • You Are Number 6: The foreman tells the Coalition prisoners that they are forbidden from using each other’s names and does not give his either.
