Season 7, Episode 13

Morgan is pushed to the limit after a mishap at the Kingdom's offering, and may not be able to return.

  • Anachronic Order: The teaser shows Ezekiel loading a single melon into a truck, provoking a stand off with the Saviors. Only to be later shown it was Richard who hid the melon and the aforementioned teaser happened after Morgan discovered it.
  • Bittersweet Ending: After everything, Carol and Ezekiel are ready to fight against the Saviors, which will get Rick one step closer to beating them in the coming war. But this came at the cost of Benjamin and Richard's lives, and it seems Morgan has finally lost his Thou Shall Not Kill philosophy Eastman taught him and is slowly going back into his dark crazed ways.
  • Call-Back:
    • Carol is finally told of the deaths of Glenn, Abraham, Spencer and Olivia.
    • Richard previously plotted to sacrifice someone to convince Ezekiel to fight in "New Best Friends."
    • In the season premiere, Daryl lashed out at Negan, and fully expected to be killed for his actions, only for Glenn to be killed instead. Here, Richard provokes a standoff with the Saviors in order to get himself killed, only for Benjamin to be killed instead.
    • Morgan dragging Richard's corpse is a visual one to his time as Crazy Survivalist in "Clear". The main difference is that he keeps his fighting staff, and buries the body instead of burning it.
    • Eastman "fixed" Morgan's spear in "Here's Not Here" by cutting the tip off and turning it into a staff. At the end of this episode, Morgan appears to be turning his new staff into a spear again by sharpening it.
  • Call to Agriculture: Ezekiel agrees with Carol that it's time to prepare to fight the Saviors, but spends the final scene planting crops with Henry, Benjamin's little brother. Carol joins them shortly after.
  • Character Death: Benjamin is killed by Jared, and Richard is strangled to death by Morgan.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Morgan experiences traumatic flashbacks to his fits of madness and the loss of his wife and child. He also sees the "Clear" mantra again.
    • A Savior roadblock is never a good thing, as we learned back in Season 6, though it turns out that it wasn't the Saviors this time.
    • Indirectly. When Daryl found out Richard's plan to sacrifice Carol in order to force Ezekiel into fighting the Saviors in "New Best Friends," Daryl angrily told Richard that if Richard was willing to die for the Kingdom, he ought to do it himself. Here, we see Richard taking that 'advice' to heart.
  • Death by Adaptation: Both Benjamin and Richard die earlier than his comic book counterpart. Benjamin in the timeframe before his comic book counterpart is even introduced.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Even for Gavin, one missing melon from a group that has gone the extra mile to meet their required offerings is still enough to warrant the loss of a human life on the Kingdom's part.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Gavin is shocked and outraged when Benjamin is shot — because he intended for Richard to be the one killed — and when he finds out he died, orders Jared to walk back to the Sanctuary and threatens to kill him where he stands if he mouths off.
  • Flat "What": When Morgan drops the bombshell that Negan killed Glenn and Abraham, Carol responds with this until he continues, and she eventually breaks down crying.
  • Forced to Watch: When Morgan attacks Richard, Gavin forbids anyone else from getting involved, so the rest of the Kingdommers present are forced to watch as Morgan strangles Richard to death (and they don't learn the context until after the deed is done).
  • Gone Horribly Right: Richard plotted to sacrifice someone close (Carol) to Ezekiel to the Saviors to convince him to rebel. His plan goes through, only while he intended to sacrifice his own life, Jared kills Benjamin.
  • Heroic BSoD: Benjamin's death causes one to Morgan, who is assaulted by the painful memories of his family's deaths and his fall into despair. Morgan later calls Benjamin "Duane".
  • Internal Reveal: Morgan tells Carol that Negan beat Abraham and Glenn to death, forced Alexandria into servitude and later killed Spencer and Olivia.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Richard is devastated that Benjamin was killed thanks to his gamble.
  • Not Me This Time: Richard leads the Kingdom crew to believe that the Saviors have left a roadblock to make them late for their tribute, and we've seen several Savior roadblocks that could convince us as well. It turns out that Richard did it to help provoke a confrontation with the Saviors.
  • Out of Order/Once More, with Clarity: The episode begins with a grim-looking Ezekiel preparing to deliver a single melon to Gavin while accompanied by Richard, Morgan, Alvaro, and Dianne. The episode later reveals why Benjamin is not present.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Gavin admits he took up the job of liaison to the Kingdom just because it's a fairly stress-free job.
  • Rule of Symbolism: The final scene shows Morgan seemingly carving his staff into a spear.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Richard kept the backpack of his dead daughter, Katy, and buried in the tomb he had expected to be buried in.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: While Morgan is ranting about what Richard did and why he killed him, he accidentally refers to Benjamin as "Duane".
