Season 7, Episode 2

Morgan and Carol meet King Ezekiel, ruler of the Kingdom.

  • Androcles' Lion: This is the reason Shiva is loyal to Ezekiel.
  • Arcadian Interlude: The episode has elements of this, as it focuses on the relative paradise of the Kingdom in between episodes depicting the Hell on Earth wrought by the Saviors.
  • Armour-Piercing Question: Ezekiel gets off a good one, with a better result than is usual for this trope. Having been asked by him to train Benjamin in Aikido, Morgan is heavily conflicted, mostly because he's starting to see his creed seemingly doesn't work (as he'd had to kill to save Carol).
Morgan: The man I shot to save Carol...the stick couldn't have saved her.
    Ezekiel: Has it saved you?
    Morgan: *pauses...then smiles slightly* Yeah.
  • Beneath the Mask: Ezekiel drops his act to Carol, explaining that he came to the village with Shiva (a tiger he rescued from the zoo) and people started talking. So, he adopted the entire over the top act as an inspiration to others.
  • Benevolent Boss: Ezekiel is a good, fatherly leader to his people.
  • Breather Episode: After the emotional turmoil of the season premiere, this episode is much calmer in stakes and tone and easily the funniest episode since "The Next World" last season. Ezekiel in particular brings a lot of laughs as he plays the Large Ham king and Carol sits around wondering what the hell's going on.
  • Cloudcuckooland: The Kingdom, from the impressions of Carol. She even outright calls it a circus. Considering how absurdly cheerful the area is and their leader, it's hard to blame her.
  • The Comically Serious: Both Morgan and especially Carol are stunned to see just how outlandish Ezekiel is.
    Carol: Are you shitting me?!
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Morgan encountered a Kingdom soldier in "East", and then encountered the men who brought him and Carol to the Kingdom in "Last Day on Earth".
    • Eastman's rabbit foot (first seen in "Coda") is seen early on in the episode. Morgan also tells Ezekiel he learned aikido from a cheesemaker, as he told Gabriel back in "JSS" (which ironically was the second episode of that season as well).
    • Carol mocks Morgan and suggests he's going to tie her up like he did Owen during early Season 6.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Zig-zapped example. Ezekiel is held in high regards to the citizens of The Kingdom because of his pet tiger Shiva. Multiple stories were made about how he wrestled her into submission, when really she is tame because Ezekiel saved her life. Ezekiel sees how these stories give the people hope and so he plays it up with a Big Ham personality to keep their spirits high, but he is shown to go out in the field and actually do stuff to keep The Kingdom safe, so he isn't an entire fake.
  • Humble Beginnings: Ezekiel was a former zookeeper (and part time community actor) when the walkers came and rescued Shiva from a zoo.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Inverted. The introduction of the Kingdom and Ezekiel brings a lighter sense of hope and comedy to the series after an extremely violent and dark previous episode.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: The one time Ezekiel even slightly breaks character during his introduction is when his steward, Jerry, answers Carol's, "I'm all about the well!" with, "Well said." Ezekiel pauses, the slightest hint of exasperation on his face and chides, "Jerry..." before getting back into his act.
  • Large Ham: Ezekiel. He's right at home on a stage, to say the least. He even addresses a bunch of walkers on his way back from the pig roundup. Justified as he confesses to Carol he played kings on stage and just upped it a bit.
  • Mood Whiplash: After the darkness of the last episode and its overwhelming broodiness, we get what may well be the funniest episode of the entire series.
  • Mythology Gag: The scene of Ezekiel confessing his past and why he takes on this performance is straight from the comic only it was Michonne he was talking to instead of Carol.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: Carol figures Ezekiel is crazy with his talk and his tiger. He reveals in a private talk that it's all just an act to be a leader to the others and he's no different than her.
Ezekiel: I found a way to deal with the bad by going wild with the good.
  • Only Sane Woman: Carol figures she's this after meeting Ezekiel.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: Alanna Masterson (Tara), Josh McDermitt (Eugene), and Christian Serratos (Rosita) are added to the opening credits sequence.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Ezekiel personally leads the pig roundup.
  • Second Episode Introduction: For Ezekiel and the Kingdom itself.
  • Ship Tease: Ezekiel seems interested in Carol, calling her a "fair maiden" (which is flowery even for his diction), has a heart to heart with her and convinces her to live on the fringes of his territory, and also goes to visit her afterwards with fruit. For her part, Carol seems to appreciate his coming clean during their heart to heart and accepts his advice.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: The pigs that the Kingdom are giving to the Saviors as tribute are being fed with walker meat.
  • Title Drop: "Drink from the well, replenish the well." Said by King Ezekiel describing how things work in the Kingdom. It's also prominently inscribed on the hall leading to his throne.
  • Undying Loyalty: Shiva has this towards Ezekiel because he saved her when she was just a cub at the zoo. After he came back during the apocalypse and saved her again she became like an overgrown house cat to him. Ezekiel knows she could easily tear off the chain collar he keeps her in, and his arm with it, but knows she would never do that.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Carol's expression at Morgan when she meets Ezekiel.
