Season 1, Episode 3

Armstrong is taken to the depths of the Croat’s headquarters as Maggie and Negan try to convince their group to mount an attack.

  • The Alcatraz: Negan refers to the Croat’s fortress as one.
  • Anti-Villain: Luther is a good man, but he decides to try to kill Negan once he finds the bounty on him.
  • Bread and Circuses: The Croat hosts a gladiatorial game where prisoners are given methane and then forced to try to fend off walkers.
  • Character Death: Negan is forced to kill Luther in self-defense.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Armstrong rips into the young man’s stomach to get the pin needed to pick the locks of his handcuffs. Negan later shows he’s still in prime form, able to beat the much larger and much angrier Luther within moments.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The title of the episode is taken from Negan’s old mantra as leader of the Saviors, most prominently heard in Season 8's "The Big, Scary U."
    • Negan and Maggie retell how despite the Savior’s reign of terror, enough good people were motivated to rally together to topple the former in Seasons 7-8.
    • Maggie looks at old family photos. Among her possessions is the Greene family watch, passed from Hershel to Glenn in Season 2’s "Judge, Jury, Executioner", later passed to Enid in Season 7's "Go-Getters". The watch was evidently recovered after Enid’s death in Season 9's "The Calm Before".
      • Also included is a sketch of Glenn that was presumably made by Anne/Jadis. The first episodes of Season 9 showed she was able to create sketches of people she didn’t even meet, and provided Maggie with portraits of her deceased loved ones.
    • Negan reveals he and Annie had a son named Joshua. He previously said he wanted to have a son back in Seasons 7-8.
    • Negan reveals to Ginny in the flashbacks that his habit of whistling came from a whistle Lucille had.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Negan immediately wins his fight with Luther by virtue of thinking fast enough to grab the cheese grater, slashing him across the forehead, and causing him to fall down and fatally strike the back of his head against a pipe sticking out of the floor.
    • Curb-Stomp Cushion: That being said, Luther does actually come close to overpowering Negan at the start of the fight, due to the former's greater size and strength.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When he sees a Thanksgiving float being used to herd walkers, Negan lampshades that the parade is looking pretty rough this year.
  • Exact Words: The Croat is revealed to have taken the title of the episode far more literally than Negan ever did, as he’s found how to convert decomposed dead into methane for fuel.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: The Croat says that cannibals killed and ate his wife and son early into the apocalypse.
  • Improvised Weapon: Negan uses a cheese grater to kill Luther in self defense.
    • In an earlier scene, Armstrong uses one of his boots to kill several Walkers in the Croat's arena.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Maggie has to take five after Amaia discloses how the Croat basically formed a new Savior empire, Amaia unaware of the trauma the old empire inflicted on her.
  • Internal Reveal: The Croat learns from Armstrong that Negan is in the city.
  • Mood Whiplash: The somber singing by Luther is followed by their group immediately, voraciously tearing into their suppers.
  • Motor Mouth: Negan lampshades that contrary to popular opinion, sometimes he does know how to shut up.
  • Not Using the "Z" Word: Amaia and Tomasso refer to walkers as "fleshies".
  • Parting-Words Regret: Maggie’s last words to Hershel were telling him he was stupid, and Hershel’s last words to Maggie before being captured were ordering her to get off his back.
  • Pet the Dog: Maggie and Negan give each other some decent courtesies. Negan defends Maggie when she has to be alone after being reminded of the terrors of the Savior empire, insisting to the others she’s perfectly tough in her own right. Maggie later clarifies to the group that Negan is no ally of the Croat.
  • Put on a Bus: Negan reveals that he put Annie and Joshua on a wagon train to Missouri and hasn’t seen them since.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Negan strongly implied Annie had been raped by her assailants and won’t even state it outright.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: Luther is The Big Guy of the group, and he leads the prayer before dinner.
  • The Starscream: The Croat’s chef is lightly implied to have purposefully not thoroughly inspected the meat he served his boss in an attempt to kill him.
  • There Are No Therapists: Negan references this, noting before the Fall that Ginny would be able to seek professional help for her trauma.
