Recap / The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon S01E03 "Paris Sera Toujours Paris"

Go To

Season 1, Episode 3

Daryl mounts a course directly for Paris.

  • Call-Back: Aimée was the young neighbor of Isabelle’s seen in the flashbacks in the previous episode. Quinn also returns.
  • The Comically Serious: Daryl is as flatly bemused by the catacomb club as you’d expect.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Like Dale Horvath and Luke Abrams before him, the musician wants culture and music to continue even after The Fall.
    • The ending of The Walking Dead: World Beyond introduced a walker variant (and with it the concept of variants) that reanimated nearly immediately after death and possessed dramatically increased strength, speed, and intelligence. We see another one of those variants midway through the episode, one that reanimates in 18 seconds.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Laurent cuts right to it and promises Daryl he won’t die in Paris, unnerving Daryl who was silently worrying about it upon seeing Jim Morrison’s grave.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Quinn reveals that he is Laurent’s father despite having been in a relationship with Isabelle.
  • Monumental Damage: Fallou says that a helicopter crashed into the Eiffel Tower during the Fall and broke off the top.
  • My Greatest Failure: Codron regards the death of his brother as this since it violated his promise to their parents to protect him.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Laurent immediately senses Daryl’s unease seeing Jim Morrison’s grave, assuring him he won’t die an American in Paris.
  • Precision F-Strike: Daryl asks "what the fuck" early on after being baffled by the musician. He later says to fuck Quinn after realizing he’s an untrustworthy prick.
  • Scenery Porn: Even over a decade after the Fall, Paris has some rather gorgeous scenery.
  • Ship Tease: Sylvie hits it off with one of Fallou’s men and shared a dance with him.
  • Shout-Out: The title "Paris Sera Toujours Paris" ("Paris Will Always Be Paris") refers to the 1939 song of the same name by Maurice Chevaliernote . Gay Paree and Small Reference Pools rolled into one, basically.
  • Spotting the Thread: Daryl slowly grows defensive around Quinn after noticing Isabelle's obvious discomfort around him.
  • Super-Persistent Predator: Codron pitches himself as someone who won’t give up on trying to find and kill Daryl for killing his brother.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Isabelle is distressed to see Aimée has long since become a walker since leaving her behind at her apartment.
  • Undead Child: Aimée has become one.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Isabelle cites this as why much of Paris fell under the warriors’ control as they wanted order and stability.
