Recap / The Venture Bros S 6 E 5 Tanks For Nuthin

Go To

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch hunts the Blue Morpho, while Doc gets a new arch who overestimates his intelligence.

  • Affably Evil: Think Tank is a supervillain who has the day job of a college professor. However, he takes his job seriously and cares about Dean as a student, ensuring he isn't home when he breaks into the Venture building and tries to be a Friendly Enemy to Rusty.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Dr. Venture's new arches only think he's supposedly trying to invert this as the Blue Morpho, taking them out without attracting the attention of the Guild and its by-laws against killing archenemies. It in fact ends up being played straight as they end up doing Monarch/Blue Morpho's job for him by literally killing themselves going after Dr. Venture.
  • Brick Joke: The Monarch takes a dump in Dr. Venture's pool, which was first suggested by #21 back in season three's "Tears of a Sea Cow". That's a three season brick joke, (about dropping a brick!)
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Deadly Force Field: Brock, during his fight with Think Tank, gets his arm stuck in the latter's protective force field. Brock thinks they are still evenly matched, only for Think Tank to retort that if he wanted to, he could cut Brock's arm off through the bone and blast the rest of him point-blank. Brock isn't too concerned about it.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Dr. Mrs. The Monarch's attempts to learn Blue Morpho's identity result in her concluding that Rusty is Blue Morpho.
  • Expy: Think Tank is one for MODOK, as well as a No Celebrities Were Harmed version of Dr. Cornel West.
  • Flying Car: Much to the surprise of Monarch and 21.
The Monarch/Blue Morpho: I love you, daddy!
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Dr. Mrs The Monarch's laptop screen shows the subjects of several emails in her inbox. These are:
    • Wide Wale: VIDEO Surveillance.
    • GCI Admin: You have nearly exceeded your cloud storage limit.
    • Red Mantle: Ignore Dragoon's previous email.
    • Dragoon: Wolves after me - please advise.
    • Nutri-produx: Exciting news about vitamin products.
    • Phantom Limb: That Bolognese recipe I told you about.
    • Dot Comm: Any news about my application?
    • GCI Admin: Meteor Majeure scheduled maintenance.
    • CopyCat: A little birdy told me...
    • Monarch: We are out of TP - please get on way home.
    • Watch (CGI Admin): Who took my juice box?
    • Ward (CGI Admin): Is this somebody's juice box? (ATTACHMENT)
  • Instant Web Hit: The video of Billy loopy from God Gas got 80,000 hits overnight. ("Wrong! Eighty thousand and one!")
  • Mistaken Identity: Deepened further with the Blue Morpho (actually The Monarch) and Doctor Venture, with Mrs. The Monarch and Battle Axe now making that connection.
  • Pet the Dog: Think Tank has Dean as a student and ensures he isn't home when breaking into the Venture building.
  • Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: Think Tank comes to Rusty expecting an enemy who can provide him the intellectual match he seeks and, despite breaking into his building, treats their encounter like meeting a new neighbor. On the flip side, Rusty treats the villain as an annoyance due to the number of villains barging in that he's already had to deal with.
  • Shout-Out: The video of Billy recovering from the "God Gas" shows him asking "is this real life?" This line was made famous by the "David After Dentist" Youtube hit showing a kid waking up after anesthesia. His sloppily eating a hamburger references an infamous video of an intoxicated David Hasselhoff attempting to do the same.
  • Smart People Play Chess: Think Tank's is a highly intelligent supervillain, who has been incredibly frustrated with arching unintelligent opponents. The first stage of his plan to arch Venture is to break into his condo and challenge him to a game of chess. This quickly falls apart when Venture reveals that he doesn't play, which Think Tank finds "disappointing".
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • When the Monarch asks Gary why he's going over the plan on his laptop instead of the giant crime computer he's resting the laptop on, Gary tells him that the decades old computer is so outdated that children's toys have more memory, and it doesn't even have an internet connection.
    • The tranquilizer in the Morpho darts is decades past expiration and only knocks the impound lot security guard out for a brief amount of time. To his credit, Monarch realizes this almost right away and calls it out.
  • Tempting Fate: Subverted. Brock actually thinks he could dodge Think Tank's laser cannon pressed point blank against his chest; one shot later of Samson being blasted off the Ventures' roof would indicate otherwise. He's half right though, his chest plate takes the hit for him.
  • Wham Episode: Thanks to The Monarch, his wife ends up thinking that Rusty is Blue Morpho.
