  • Call-Back: Brock says that he gave Hank the bass guitar he uses in the band as a Christmas gift, which happened in "A Very Venture Christmas".
  • Continuity Nod: The birthday party Shallow Gravy plays (where Dermott gets chewed out by the father) is for the boy Rusty "quick cloned" after he was killed by the gorilla in "The Buddy System".
  • Documentary Episode: It plays out like an episode of Behind the Music featuring Shallow Gravy.
  • Oh, Crap!: Rusty when hears Dermott's last name for the first time and pieces together that Dermott is his illegitimate son.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Dermott has a Dethklok poster on his bedroom wall.
    • In the "Jacket" music video, there are numerous shout-outs to real bands/musicals:
      • Dermott has a colorful scarf tied to the microphone stand, a hallmark of Aerosmith.
      • The scene with Dermott standing on a cliff with his arms spread are a reference to Creed's music video for "One Last Breath".
      • Dean wears the eponymous coat from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
      • H.E.L.P.eR is wearing "cat man" makeup like Peter Criss from KISS.
      • The scene with band members running through the woods intercut with words written in chalk on a blackboard is a reference to the Pearl Jam video for their song "Jeremy".
      • Shallow Gravy performing on the roof of the Venture compound is a reference to The Beatles famous "rooftop" performance, with Dermott wearing the same jacket as John Lennon.
    • Lyrics to the Duran Duran song "Rio" can be seen on the monitor during the scene of Rusty "inventing karaoke".
