A recap for The Summer You Were There, sorted by volume. Be warned: all spoilers are unmarked.

    Volume 1(Chapter 1-5)
The story begins with Shizuku Hoshikawa looking at a picture of herself and Kaori Asaka, reflecting on the summer they spent together.

Shizuku, a high school first-year, finishes a novel in class. Her classmate, Kaori, helps her by reminding her of where they left off in class, and while Kaori invites Shizuku to lunch, Shizuku refuses, afraid that she will hurt people by being around them. That evening, Shizuku uploads the last chapter to "Girls Lovers Suicide," a web novel she published, and after having a traumatic flashback of negative comments, deletes her novel, then resolves to kill herself.

The next day at school, Shizuku plans on throwing out her manuscript when Kaori takes her by surprise and picks up the manuscript she dropped. She then announces that she's borrowing it, and promises to return it later. Shizuku spends the evening worrying about what Kaori will do with it.

The next morning, the last day of class before summer break, Shizuku comes in early. When Kaori arrives, Shizuku dreads what Kaori will say about her novel, but is shocked to find Kaori loved it. Kaori is saddened to hear that Shizuku has no plans to keep writing, and proposes that they go out so Shizuku can write a story about them.

The next day, Shizuku is about to take the family dog, Shion, for a walk when she runs into Kaori, seemingly by coincidence. Shizuku's older sister Shizuka is pleased to meet Kaori, and offers to walk Shion so that Shizuku and Kaori can talk.

Shizuku wonders how Kaori knew where she lived and is still suspicious of why she wants Shizuku to write their love story. She dismisses Kaori's proposal is stupid, but stops short, afraid that she'll offend Kaori. Kaori proposes that they pretend to be in a relationship until the end of summer, and Shizuku reluctantly agrees.

The following morning, Shizuku oversleeps and wakes up to Kaori outside her window. Still a bit uncomfortable with Kaori's proposal, she says she was planning on going to the library, only to find that Kaori is eager to come along.

At the library, Shizuku notices that Kaori is an avid reader, like her, and they enjoy the same author. Shizuku wonders why Kaori likes her work so much and whether Kaori can accept her.

Not long afterward, Kaori tries to get Shizuku to go to an aquarium with her, but Shizuku refuses, claiming that it's too hot out, she can't afford it and she doens't have any clothes for the date. Kaori eventually backs down and hangs up, causing Shizuku to wonder if she hurt her feelings.

Soon afterward, Kaori shows up at Shizuku's house with a dress, shoes and a hair accessory for her, as well as morning glory seeds. She shows the seeds to Kaori's mother, who lets them plant her in a planter outside. Kaori remarks about how nice Shizuku's mother and sister are, and says they'd listen to Shizuku's troubles, but Shizuku is afraid of how her mother or sistre would react.
Shizuku and Kaori plant the morning glories, which are expected to bloom in one to two months. Shizuku realizes that the semester will have started and her and Kaori's pretend relationship will have ended, but concludes that she'll think about that when the time comes. As Kaori stands up, she stumbles forward and Shizuku catches her. Shizuku finds something suspicious.

An extra chapter shows Kaori's younger sister Shiori giving her morning glory seeds. Shiori agrees to let Kaori give them to her "friend" (i.e. Shizuku), but is worried about Kaori pushing herself. Kaori reassures Shiori that she's having fun every day.

Shizuku shows up to the aquarium wearing the outfit Kaori gave her, and Kaori insists on paying. Kaori and Shizuku hold hands as part of their "couple" act when walking through the aquarium. Kaori, who'd called Shizuku "Hoshikawa-san" up to this point, asks if she can call her by her first name, and Shizuku nonchalantly accepts, but continues calling Kaori "Asaka-san."

Time passes and Shizuku starts enjoying herself, but starts feeling guilty. While Kaori is in the bathroom, Shizuku, pondering how Kaori has become part of her life, buys Kaori a plushie as a gift.

As Kaori returns and accepts the plushie, she thanks Shizuku, calling her a kind person. Shizuku vehemently disagrees and, reaching her breaking point, reveals her secret- she was a bully in elementary school. Shizuku expects that Kaori will give up on her, but to her shock, Kaori calmly accepts what Shizuku says, claiming she already knew about Shizuku being a bully.

    Volume 2 (Chapter 6-10)
Shizuku is shocked at Kaori's confession, claiming she never told anyone about her bullying. Kaori reveals that she was in the class next door to Shizuku's when they were in fifth grae, the year the bullying occurred. Shizuku, not knowing why Kaori would want to get close to someone as "rotten" as her despite knowing everything, flees the aquarium, leaving Kaori bheind.

By the time Shizuku gets home, it has started to rain. Soaked and upset, she walks past her sister without a word and angrily deflects Shizuku's concern. Shizuku feels guilty about running from Kaori and taking out her anger on Shizuka, then lies on her bed, wondering why Kaori is associating with her.

Kaori stops by the Hoshikawa residence, but Shizuka informs her that Shizuku is ill with a fever. Kaori then asks Shizuka for a favor.

The story flashes back to elementary school, when she helped a classmate, Ruri Ichinose, with schoolwork, since Ruri often missed class. While Shizuku' classmates praised her and her teachers noted that she expressed herself well, Ruri was uncomfortable with Shizuku's harsh words, but did not openly say anything.

Time went on and Shizuku became more abrasive, blaming Ruri for costing their class victory in a dodgeball game, and accusing Ruri of slacking off while not listening to Ruri's claim of having to go to the hospital. Some of her classmates protested, but Shizuku brushed off their protests, claiming she was the only one saying what everyone else was thinking.

One day, Ruri was tasked with bringing curry to the other students. Shizuku, annoyed with how long Ruri was taking, slapped her on the back, causing her to fall over. Ruri's friend Seri Ichihara, who was from another class, came running after hearing the commotion and slapped Shizuku, publicly calling her out on her behavior and accusing her of being a bully, turning the school against her.

Shizuku wakes up from a nightmare of the past, finding that her phone's battery has run out. Shizuka stops by with porridge, medicine and a letter from Kaori, encouraging Shizuku to make up with Kaori. Shizuku apologizes to her sister for yelling at her the previous day, an apology Shizuka accepts.

After Shizuku's fever goes down, she contemplates cutting ties with Kaori so that she won't hurt Kaori, and wonders if Kaori hates her. But then Shizuku realizes that Kaori has always been open with Shizuku, while Shizuku ran away rather than listne to Kaori. She then decides that even if she's scared, she must read what Kaori has to say.

Kaori apologizes for shocking Shizuku the other day, and mentions that she didn't bring up the past due to Shizuku not wanting to talk about it. She then confesses that she admired Shizuku in fifth grade, and only knows about the bullying because of rumors. She concludes by asking to meet with Shizuku.

Kaori is in her room with the plushie Shizuku gave her, talking with Shiori about it, when she gets a message from Shizuku. She immediately gets up and goes to Shizuku's house.

Kaori apologizes for blindsiding Shizuku with her admission, once again calling her "Hoshikawa-san," a change Shizuku notices but doesn't comment on. Shizuku apologizes for running away and not contacting Kaori, then asks Kaori to tell her more about herself.

Kaori admits that she always knew but was hesitant to bring it up because Shizuku was wary of her. She admits that she found Shizuku's home by chance by driving by it. Kaori confirms that she only heard rumors about Shizuku's bullying and only ecided to bring it up when Shizuku came clean.

Shizuku asks about Kaori's admiration or her, and Kaori tells her that Shizuku was charismatic and helped people. Shizuku denies that there was anything to admire, claiming that she was blind to hurting others, and thus doesn't deserve to live a carefree life.

Upon realizing the depths of Shizuku's self-loathing, Kaori asks if Shizuku was planning on killing herself, something she realized when she read "Girls Lovers Suicide," and realized that the main character, who wanted to atone for her mistakes by committing suicide with her friend, represented Shizuku's own burdens. Shizuku mentally confirms Kaori's suspicions.

Kaori then reveals that she wanted to get Shizuku to write again so she would have a reason to live. When Shizuku asks why she would bother with someone like her, whom Kaori barely knew, Kaori tells Shizuku that she loved Shizuku's story, feeling as though it expresses herself. Shizuku still refues to believe Kaori, feeling as though she's a horrible person who hurt Ruri, cannot even apologize and lacks redeeming qualiies.

In response, Kaori replies that Shizuku wouldn't have agonized over her past actions if she weren't a good person, nor would Shizuku have gifted her the plushie. She remarks that she got that impression after seeing Shizuku at their high school entrance ceremony. To her, Shizuku was burdened by guilt and she doesn't want it to swallow her completely.

Kaori asks if Shizuku wanted to hurt Ruri, and Shizuku says no, but adds that it only made it worse, since she kept on hurting her out of the belief that she was right. Shizuku confirms that she tried to push Kaori away out of fear that she'd hurt Kaori, but is at a loss when asked whether she hates being with Kaori. Shizuku admits to herself that she was uncomfortable around Kaori at first, but had fun.

Kaori tells Shizuku that no one can go through life without hurting others, and that she shold apologize for doing so. She suggetss that she apologize to Ruri, and allow Ruri to give her space if she can't forgive Shizuku. Kaori then tearfully asks Shizuku not to commit suicide or torture herself.

After a tender moment together, Kaori remarks that Shizuku expresses herself well in writing, and Shizuku realizes that it's because if she makes a mistake, she can cross it out and rewrite it. Shizuku regrets not writing an apology letter to Ruri now that it's too late, but Kaori suggests that she give it a try.

A side chapter shows a now teenaged Ruri, who is waiting for Seri in the city. Ruri is wearing her uniform so she can go to her club from Seri's house. Seri proposes getting a bite to eat, but Ruri silently hesistates upon seeing banners promoting curry, which reminds her of Shizuku's bullying. Ruri apologizes, resulting in Seri teasing her a little, and then gets a text from Kaori.

The story switches back to Shizuka and Kaori. Shizuka, knowing Kaori can contact Ruri, works on writing an apology letter, but is unable to make any progress.

As July draws to a close, Shizuku meets Kaori on the bus, having invited her to the library. She mentions her lack of progress on the letter, and her doubts about how well it will be received, since it seems like a way to make herself feel better. Kaori concedes that Shizuku has a point but wants her to feel better, then suggests looking for information at the library.

Kaori and Shizuku learn about an upcoming fireworks festival the following evening. Kaori is eager to go, remarking that it's a must or a summer date. She then reminds Shizuku of their couple act and the promise to write a story. After some thought, Shizuku decides Kaori would be happy to read the story.
The day o fth efestival, the two meet up, wearing yukatas, and like how each other looks. Shizuku mentions that Shizuka, who is going to beauty school, helped her with her yukata in exchange for doing her hair.

Shizuku and Kaori enjoy the festival, and Shizuku decides to write an apology to Ruri in the form of a story. As the two watch fireworks, Shizuku realizes that while she bears the guilt of hurting Ruri, she can still enjoy herself with Kaori. Shizuku expresses her desire to go to the festival again next year. After a brief pause, Kaori apologizes, her words drowned out by the fireworks.

As Shizuku and Kaori prepare to go home, Shizuku notices that Kaori seems tired, but Kaori attributes it to her clothing, especially her wooden geta sandals. Shizuku returns home in a good mood, unaware that, at the Asaka house, Kaori is gasping for breath, trying to take medications.

    Volume 3(Chapter 11-15)
The day after the festival, at the start of August, Kaori visits the Hoshikawa house and is pleased at the mornng glories' progress a week after planting them.

Shizuku is about to ask Kaori something when her mother comes out to offer shaved ice. Kaori is then introduced to Shion, and hears Shizuka's first name for the first time. Shizuku's mother then sends Shizuku and Kaori to walk Shion and get milk.

Kaori enjoys walking Shion and learns that Shizuku has had him for four years. Shizuku then asks Kaori for advice about her apology letter for Ruri, having written a story and needing to make it into a letter. Kaori agrees and Shizuku is grateful, but refuses to share her story. Shizuku doesn't want anyone to know that she writes, not even her family, hence why she waited to ask her question until after leaving the house.

Shizuku, noticing that Kaori called Shizuka by her first name, asks her to do the same for Shizuku. Kaori agrees, on the condition that Shizuku do the same, and Shizuku agrees after some hesitation. Shizuku, in a good mood, works on the story.

Shizuku soon finishes the story and invites Kaori over to read it; Kaori is excited but Shizuku is tense, and ends up thinking about how beautiful Kaori is as she reads.

Kaori approves of the story, and Shizuku is somewhat relieved. Shizuku asks for Kaori's help in turning it into a letter, and after a teasing reminder to use her first name, Kaori accepts, confident that Shizuku can express herself well. Shizuku writes out a letter, but is dissatisfied with how it reads, and Kaori proposes that she make it a short and simple.

After a great deal of work, Shizuku finishes, with Kaori congratulating her and Shizuku thanking Kaori. Shizuku still doubts whether Ruri will want to read it, and in response, Kaori proposes a face-to-face meeting. Shizuku is afraid of seeing Ruri, certain that Ruri hates her, but realizes that she may never get another chance, and willingly takes it, letting Ruri choose a time.

Kaori, getting a message from her sister, heads home, but Shizuku insists on escorting her, making excuses about it. She then thinks about the fake relationship they have, and is less than happy that it will only last ofr the summer.

Not long afterward, Kaori calls Shizuku at night, informing her that Ruri agreed to meet on August 7, with Shizuku agreeing.

The day arrives and Shizuku gets dressed in the outfit Kaori bought her. She's anxious and nervous about how "selfish" the apology is, but believes they can move forward together.

Shizuku meets up with Kaori, explaining that she wore the dress she got from her because it seemed appropriate to dress up, and because the clothing gives her courage.

Unfortunately, Shizuku's anxiety grows as she approaches the station, with her imagining how the apology cold play out and how she never apologized to Ruri back then. Kaori, sensing that Shizuku is not at all fine, proposes that they rest. Despite being wracked with fear and self-loathing, Shizuku refuses to come back another day, even as she's on the verge of a panic attack. Kaori then gives Shizuku a Cooldown Hug, revitalizing her, and they go to the meeting spot Holding Hands. Unfortunately, Shizuku' second wind only lasts until she sees Ruri with Seri.

Shizuku is amazed at how Ruri has grown, and recognizes Seri, who is glaring at her, as the one who slapped her. Kaori greets the two of them, with Seri remarking that she only came because Kaori asked. Faced with Seri's hostility, Shizuku is unable to speak until Kaori encourages her. Shizuku states her intent to apologize to Ruri, then offers the letter, switching from calling her "Ruri-chan" to the more formal "Ichinose-san."

Ruri reads the letter, as does Seri, who contemptuously says the apology is inadequate. Kaori defends Shizuku, saying she was being concise. Kaori then asks Ruri to speak with Shizuku; Seri objects, but after a pause, Ruri reluctantly agrees. Shizuku thanks Kaori, who goes off with Seri to give her privacy.

Seri demands to know why Kaori came with Shizuku, and after Kaori evasively replies that she ended up in the same school as Shizuku, Seri clarifies that she wants to know why Kaori is out given her condition, only for Kaori to brush off the question by saying it's a "good day" for her.

Seri then asks what Shizuku wants, remarking that Ruri has never gotten over what Shizuku did to her. Kaori replies that Shizuku is also tormented by her guilt, and knows full well what she did, hoping that Shizuku and Ruri can come to an understanding. Seri replies that Ruri has no interest in seeing Shizuku again, and only came out of a sense of obligation to Kaori, before accusing Kaori of manipulating them into going along with her demands. Kaori admits that she did, since she wanted Seri to meet Shizuku. Seri grudgingly concedes Kaori's point.
Meanwhile, things are awkward between Ruri and Shizuku. Shizuku tries to apologize, but ends up saying the same things she crossed out. Ruri then asks what Shizuku wants, and whether she wants forgiveness, but Shizuku says no. Ruri adds that she tried to forget what happened, but the pain is still with her, and she never wanted to see Shizuku again. Shizuku realizes that she caused Ruri harm that could never be undone, but still selfishly wanted to be forgiven, having forgotten that Ruri's pain is greater than her own. Shizuku apologizes, explains that she merely wanted to tell Ruri how she felt, and asks if there is anything she can do to atone. Ruri says no, and simply asks Shizuku to leave her alone. Shizuku gets up, bows in apology to Ruri and thanks her for coming before leaving to get Kaori. Ruri wonders if Shizuku was always like this.

Seri runs over and checks to see whether Ruri is OK, while Kaori asks Shizuku if she said what she needed to; Shizuku says yes with a bittersweet smile. Shizuku notices how close Kaori is with Ruri and Seri, and wonders if Kaori hates her.

Ruri and Seri start to leave, at which point Shizuka, bowing, calls out to them and thanks them for coming. Ruri turns around and returns the bow before walking away. Shizuka starts to thank Kaori, but sees Kaori collapse, gasping for breath, then screams Kaori's name.

Seri and Ruri hear Shizuku's screams and rush over, with Ruri calling an ambulance and reporting that Kaori has a chronic respiratory disease, much to Shizuku's shock. As the ambulance takes Kaori away, Ruri goes with the ambulance while Seri grabs Shizuku by the wrist and takes her to the hopital.

On the subway to the hospital, Seri tells Shizuku that Kaori has had a lung disease ever since she was young, but Shizuku doesn't believe her, since Kaori seemed fine to her, and wonders if Seri is lying out of spite.

Shizuku reaches the hospital and meets Kaori's family, but is left with no choice but to go home and think about how what happened recolors everything she knows about Kaori.

The following day, Kaori sends a message asking Shizuku to come to the hospital When Shizuku arrives, Kaori seems cheerful and downplays her condition. When Shizuku brings up what Seri said, however, Kaori goes silent for a moment, then confirms that it's true. She then, calling Shizuku "Hoshikawa-san" again, suggests that they break up.

    Volume 4(Chapter 16-20)
As Shizuku reels from Kaori's sudden request to break up, Kaori explains that she does not wish to inconvenience Shizuku by forcing her to visit her, and claims this is or her own good. Kaori then attempts to return Shizuku's manuscript.

Shizuku is bewildered, unsure why Kaori would want to break up with her- whether because Shizuku offended her or because of Shizuku's past as a bully- but is certain of one thing: Kaori is serious.

Nevertheless, Shizuku refuses to take back the manuscript and demands that Kaori tell her the truth. Kaori stuns Shizuku by revealing that she is dying and she won't leave the hospital. Shizuku tries to find some cause for hope that Kaori's condition is not terminal, but Kaori bluntly shoots down each possibility.

Kaori proposes that they end their relationship before it becomes too painful, but Shizuku vehemently refuses. Kaori's cheerful facade shatters and she begins to cry, revealing that she believes she can't do anything for Shizuku in her condition. Shizuku, however, tearfully insists that she merely wants to be with Kaori, but Kaori says that losing a loved one is painful to those left behind and that she knows that pain(implied to be from the loss of her mother). Because of this, Kaori had planned to quietly disappear from Shizuku's life so Shizuku would never have to learn of her illness, but that plan failed.

Shizuku insists on staying by Kaori's side to get what she can only get from Kaori, promising to write their love story. She knows there's no easy way to end their relationship, but by this point, Kaori has become important to her. Kaori accepts, and Shizuku feels some measure of relief that their connection is intact.

Not long afterward, Kaori goes in for a test and the doctor tells her that her condition has worsened, but refuses to give her a definite anwer as to whether she can rest at home. Kaori, depressed, writes about this development in her diary.

Two days have passed since Shizuku's visit to Kaori in the hospital. Shizuku worries about Kaori while watering the morning glories, since Kaori is too busy with tests to see her. While Shizuku is in the bath, she gets a text from Kaori telling her that she can visit tomorrow.

Shizuku feel a bit sure about actually writing the story, having made the promise on the spur of the moment, but has written the opening scene and doesn't intend to give up.

Shizuku arrives at the hospital and notices that Kaori is unnaturally cheerful. Having become aware of how much pain Kaori is hiding, Shizuku insists that Kaori be open with her, and Kaori agrees, then asks to see the story.

Shizuku begins showing Kaori the story, starting with how they were classmates and how Shizuku initiallly disliked Kaori. Kaori teases Shizuku about how it feels "awkward" reading about her, but enjoys it, and admits that she knew Shizuku had trouble with dealing with people, given how easy Shizuku is to read. Shizuku used her and Kaori's real names, since it's for their eyes only, and Kaori is eager to read the rest.

On the way out, Shizuku runs into Ruri and Seri, who came to visit Kaori. The meeting immediately turns awkward, but Shizuku thanks them for helping Kaori after her collapse. Seri remarks that she's used to it and offers to tell Shizuku more about Kaori, sending Ruri on ahead to Kaori while she and Shizuku talk.

Seri confirms that she still hates Shizuku, but adds that it didn't matter when Kaori needed help. When Shizuku asks why Seri told her about Kaori's illness, Seri replies that she knows what it's like to be in the dark about a friend's illness, and didn't want any harm to befall Kaori due to Shizuku not knowing.

Shizuku inquires about Seri's friendsip with Kaori, and Seri mentions that Kaori met Ruuri at the same hospital, resulting in them becoming friends and Seri becoming friends with Kaori when she visited Ruri. According to Seri, Kaori keeps in touch with Ruri and Seri, but neither of them had seen her for six months.

Shizuku asks whether Ruri is sick, too, and after a moment of angry disbelief, Seri realizes Shizuku is telling the truth. Like Kaori, Ruri has a chronic illness, and while it is currently under control, Ruri used to collapse and be hospitalized. Shizuku is even more ashamed at how she treated Ruri, who had a legitimate reason for falling behind. She apologizes, but Seri says it won't change anything.

As Seri gets up to leave, Shizuku asks why she would say all this to someone she hated. Seri remarks that she saw much of herself in Kaori, given that they're both close to people who are ill and don't know what's going on, then adds that Kaori's "girlfriend" should know. Shizuku, flustered, asks if Kaori said anything to Seri, but Seri remarks that it's only a guess. Shizuku thanks Seri as the latter leaves, then ponders how someone else thought she and Kaori looked like a couple.

Shizuku continues to think about Seri's remarks as she writes, but concludes that she and Kaori aren't really a couple. Nevertheless, when she goes to see Kaori, she's caught off guard when Kaori casually says she's "in love" with Shizuku's novel.

Kaori likes the version of herself in the story, and suggests that the story's Kaori be a normal girl who isn't sick, a suggestion Shizuku accepts, since the story is solely for Kaori's eyes and Kaori's sake.

Shizuku asks Kaori for other requests, but Kaori is unsure. Shizuku then gets a text from her sister asking her to do an errand. Kaori is briefly concerned about how much time and money Shizuku is spending on her, but Shizuku replies that she doesn't mind, since she has no other friends. She admits that she doesn't mind taking requests, and asks Kaori to make a request. Kaori then comes up with one.

The scene then cuts to the Hoshikawa sisters on a mountain hike together, as Kaori asked Shizuku to go on a hike to take photos and bring Shizuka along. Shizuku wonders why Kaori would make such a request or how she could incorporate that into her story.

Shizuka is a bit worried about Kaori's hospitalization, even though she is unaware of the severity of Kaori's condition. Despite everything, Shizuku hopes Kaori can get out of the hospital soon.

The mountain turns out to be much more difficult than Shizuku thought, while the more physically fit Shizuka has no problem with it, so the sisters take a break.

As they get moving again, Shizuka remarks how Shizuku has changed, evidenced by inviting Shizuka on an outing, and recalls that was how they adopted Shion. Shizuku is surprised, having been under the impression that the Hoshikawas got Shion from a relative who had a baby, and Shizuka says that while that's true, their mother was inspired to adopt him after doing research on therapy animals after Shizuku stopped talking. Shizuku recalls that she started to distance herself from her family after being ostracized for bullying Ruri, but opened up a little after Shion came.

Shizuka notes that Kaori also helped Shizuku open up again. Shizuku recalls that she'd planned to dispose of the manuscript and kill herself without saying anything, not realizing anyone would care. Seeing her sister happy, Shizuku realizes that her family is a place where she can belong, apologizing to her sister for worrying her and thanking her. Shizuka suggests that Shizuka tell that

The two sisters have ice cream, then take some pictures and send them to Kaori. Kaori is pleased and considers her next request.

The Hoshikawa sisters get home, and their mother is shocked to hear that Shizuku invited Shizuka. Shizuka whispers to her mother that Shizuku will be fine. Shizuka apologizes to and thanks her mother, who invites her to dinner.

Kaori enjoys the story and photos, then gives Shizuku her next request. She enjoys reading Kanae's novels and asks Shizuku to get a book in the Fata Morgana series from her house.

Shizuku rings the doorbell and Shiori answers the door. Shizuku tells Shiori the title of the book and Shiori goes inside without another word. After waiting a while, Shizuku, worried that Shiori is having trouble, goes inside and into Kaori's room, where Shiori is rummaging around for the book. Shizuku is toched that Kaori still has the plushie Shizuku gave her.

Shizuku anounces her presence, and Shiori angrily tells her not to come in, confirming Shizuku's fears that Shiori dislikes her. Shizuku quickly finds the book, and is about to leave when Shiori demands to know why it "has to be" Shizuku who gets the book to Kaori. She snatches the book from Shizuku and insists on taking it to Kaori, and that Shizuku not go see Kaori again. Shizuku says Kaori asked her, and Shiori, bitter, says she hates Shizuku.

An extra chapter reveals that Kaori's mother nicknamed her "Kao," and she, in turn, nicknamed Shiori "Shio." Shiori decides she doesn't need friends as long as she has her sister, and remarks that the plushie isn't all that cute.

    Volume 5(Chapter 21-25)
Shizuku, confused by Shiori's demand that she give Kaori back, protests that she hasn't taken anything. Shiori then says that Kaori wanted to be a high school girl for a semester and would rest over the summer, but ended going out to see Shizuku. Shiori worried that her sister was pushing herself too far, but didn't press the issue due to how happy she seemed, and hoped she would go back to normal.

For Shiori, all that changed when Kaori collapsed the day of the festival. Shizuku is horrified, having noticed that Kaori was less upbeat than usual back then but having assumed she'd gone back to normal. Shiori then blames Shizuku for what happened, and Shizuku can only apologize, not having known. Shiori is unsurprised, saying Kaori hides her pain even though Shiori wishes she would lean on her more. Shizuku replies that she feels the same way, pondering how Kaori's "selfish" requests are to help others, and realizing that she acts that way toward her family.

Shiori tearfully admits that she's worried about Kaori, and Shizuku, who is also in tears, tries to give her a hug, saying she feels the same way. To Shizuku, Kaori was first an annoying classmate, then a pretend girlfriend, then an important person to her. Kaori helped her begin to be happy again, forgive herself a little and reconnect with her family. Shizuku wants to give back to Kaori, make her happy and be there for her. All this concludes with Shizuku realizing that she loves Kaori, which is why she feels so much pain now that Kaori is dying.

Shiori offers Shizuku the book, confessing that she was jealous of Shizuku and that Kaori would be ashamed of her if she got between them. Shizuku calls Shiori mature, and when Shiori takes offense, admits that she's still a child.

As Shizuku dries her hair that evening, she thinks about what it means to love someone, and recalls how she thought it was happier. She concludes that she and Shiori are alike in that they love Kaori and are suffering over it now. Shizuku makes note of how close the Asaka sisters are, as Kaori still has a profile picture of herself and her sister, and is thus unsurprised that Shiori dislikes Shizuku for getting between the sisters.

Shizuku, conflicted, wonders if she shouldn't visit Kaori every day, since it's exhausting for her to see multiple people every day. On the one hand, Kaori enjoys her visits, but on the other hand, Kaori pushes herself too hard while forcing a smile. That decision ends up being made for Shizuku, as a typhoon is set to arrive the next day, forcing Shizuku to stay home and move the morning glories inside.

Shizuku texts Kaori, informing her that she can't come, and Kaori is understanding. Shizuku is disappointed that she can't see Kaori, and, wanting to speak with her, asks if she can call her. As Shizuku frets over whether phone calls are allowed when one is hospitalized, or whether she's being annoying, Kaori enthusiastically says yes, and thanks her for asking.

The next morning, as the rain falls, Shizuku calls Kaori, but is distracted by her thoughts about being in love with her. Kaori asks her about visiting Shiori, and Shizuku answers tactfully, leaving out Shiori's hostility. Shizuku is taken off guard when Kaori claims Shiori actually thinks Shizuku is a nice person and they'd get closer if they talk more.

Kaori then suffers a coughing fit, which she dismisses as choking on something. Wanting to do something for Kaori, Shizuku asks Kaori for suggestions, and Kaori jokingly proposes promise rings. Shizuku is a bit disappointed that Kaori doesn't ask for more, but feels conflicted, considering that she might be selfish for asking for more.

Kaori hangs up with a smile on her face, but starts coughing again, takes a drink of water and gasps for breath. Kaori then puts a check mark on a page indicating her desire to establish a connection between Shizuku and Shiori.

Shizuku goes to look at promise rings and immediately decides that since promise rings are expensive and she doesn't know how to find a good one, she should give up on that idea. She does, however, find an alternative.

Shizuku sees Kaori for the first time since the typhoon, and as they exchange small talk, thinks about how she's glad to see her. Shizuku shows her pictures of the morning glories, gives her Fata Morgana, offers her latest work on her manuscript and, after a bit of hesitation, gives Kaori a gift. The gift is a hair ribbon, which Kaori gratefully accepts and puts on her hair.

Shizuku contemplates whether to confess to Kaori, but decides against it, not knowing how Kaori will react. To her, it's obvious that Kaori doesn't dislike her, but that doesn't mean Kaori necessarily returns her feelings.

Kaori eagerly asks when she can see the next part of Shizuku's story, and praises Shizuku's writing, suggesting that she could become an author. Shizuku doubts that she could submit her work to a judge, or make a living on it. Kaori innocently proposes that Shizuku submit her novel to a web novel site, but Shizuku vehemently says no. Aftera moment of awkward silence, Shizuku excuses herself.

As Shizuku goes to the vending machine to buy a bottle of water, she wonders why she overreacted, since Kaori knows so many of her secrets. Shizuku considers telling Kaori, but feels nervous about how Kaori will react. Remembering Seri's warning that Kaori could collapse again, Shizuku realizes that she should cherish every momet with Kaori.

As Shizuku returns to Kaori's room, Kaori apologizes for putting pressure on Shizuku, but Shizuku apologizes, promising to tell Kaori when she's ready. Shizuku offers Kaori the water as a way of apology, and then excuses herself, since Ruri will be stopping by soon. As Shizuku leaves, she looks at the web novel site, where her novel used to be, and wonders where to begin.

Ruri goes to see Kaori by herself, and tells her about photography club. Ruri notices Kaori's "cute" ribbon, and while she's surprised to hear that Shizuku got her the gift, Ruri notices that Kaori is happiest when talking about Shizuku, whom Shizuku describes as her "savior."

Ruri mentions that Kaori wanted her to see Shizuku as she is now, and acknowledges that Shizuku has changed. Ruri had once thought Shizuku was scary, but now sees her kinder side, with her visting Kaori every day ad givng her gifts. Ruri wondered if Kaori had changed from associating with Shizuku, but is glad that she's still the same kind person Ruri knows.

Ruri feels guilty, as though she's stuck in the past, but Kaori disagrees, acknowledging that Shizuku hurt Ruri in the past, even if she's changed. She doesn't expect Ruri to forgive Shizuku, but hopes the two can start over and wants to do what she can to help that.

Kaori then begins violently coughing and claims she choked on something. Ruri protests that Kaori doesn't need to help her or Shizuku, but Kaori admits that she was told she'd never leave the hospital again. She then backpedals slightly, mentioning that she gets to spend one night away from the hospital, and while Ruri insists that she use it for herself, Kaori replies that this is what she wants. Kaori proposes that Ruri go with her to the beach and take photos of her.

The next day, Shizuku shows Kaori more of the novel, and while Kaori is excited, Shizuku worries what wil happen when the novel comes to an end and she loses her excuse to see Kaori every day, or if Kaori dies.

Shizuku, while watering the morning glories, ponders the novel, in which Kaori is not sick and she and Shizuku turn their fake romance into a real one in the end. It's a happy ending, and while Shizuku doesn't want to write it, she persists for Kaori's sake.

Shizuku arrives at the hospital, having made minimal progress, and sees Shiori, who tearfully tells her that Kaori is unconscious. Shizuku, frightened of what might become of Kaori, is frozen in place until Kaori and Shiori's father arrives, revealing that Kaori woke up. He greets Shizuku, who introduces herself, and thanks her for visiting Kaori but akss her to come back another day.

Shizuku goes home and laments taking her time with Kaori for granted, and taking her claims at doing well at face value. That night, Kaori texts Shizuku to thank her for visiting and tell her that she'll be able to see her in two days. Shizuku tries to write, but is unable to think of what a healthy Kaori would be able to do.

Unable to make progress, Shizuku doesn't visit Kaori until Kaori calls and asks why. Shizuku apologizes for not having anything to show her, but Kaori says it's fine, and tearfully says she doesn't want to die before seeing Shizuku again. Shizuku, realizing that Kaori has never been so vulnerable, realize how foolish she's been, rushes to the hospital, embraces Kaori and apologizes. Kaori forgives Shizuku, who is grateful that Kaori is relying on her.

Kaori then tells Shizuku about her plans to go to the beach.
In an extra chapter, Kaori texts Ruri and tells her about the plans to go to the beach on the 23rd, as well as how Shizuku will be there. Despite being afraid to talk to Shizuku and Seri insisting that Ruri can say no if she wants, Ruri insists on going to get to know Shizuku so she can overcome her fear.

    Volume 6(Chapter 26-32)
Shizuku, after hearing Kaori's beach plans, realizes that Kaori is forcing herself, but doesn't know what she can do besides pretend not to notice.

Shizuku, along with Kaori, Ruri and Shizuku, arrives at the beach. She wants Kaori to have fun, but is distracted, knowing that Kaori's condition is worse than she lets on, and feeling awkward around Ruri and Seri. Kaori's father reminds her to tell someone if she starts feeling sick, and tells her friends to call him if they need anything. The four of them set out, with Seri pushing the wheelchair.

Kaori makes small talk with Seri and Ruri about the latter's clubs, and while Shizuku is glad to see Kaori enjoying herself, she still feels awkward around Ruri and wonders if she should be there. The group stops for a moment, and Kaori asks for a drink, sending Shizuku out with Ruri.

Shizuku, unsure of what Kaori is planning, suggests going by herself, but Ruri asks to talk to her. Ruri admits that she's always been scared of Shizuku and as much as she wants to forget what Shizuku did to her, she can't. However, she wants to get to know Shizuku as she is now, since Shizuku is kind to Kaori and has made a sincere effort to apologize to Ruri. Shizuku asks if Kaori had told Ruri to say this, but while Ruri admits she wouldn't have gone this far without speaking to Kaori, she wants to do this for herself. She then adds that while friendship might be a bit too much to ask, they could start as acquaintances rather than avoiding each other.

Seeing that Ruri has changed, Shizuku, addressing her as "Ruri-chan" once again, bows to her and apologizes, then agrees to her request to get to know her. Shizuku acknowledges that she hasn't necessarily been forgiven, but she and Ruri have a connection, however thin it is. She returns with the drink and thanks Kaori, who denies doing anything. As the group takes the picture that is on Shizuku's desk in the first scene, Shizuku thinks about how much she has changed due to Kaori's help. Seri and Ruri prepare to leave, and Seri entrusts Shizuku with the task of pushing Kaori's wheelchair.

Shizuku and Kaori go back to the aquarium. Kaori tell Shizuku that she told Seri about it while Kaori and Ruri were away. Shizuku recalls that they went there at the start of the sumer. Shizuku then asks if Kaori should be spending time with her rather than her family, but Shizuku says she'll see her father and sister later.

As Kaori and Shizuku go through the aquarium, Shizuku thinks about Kaori and considers making a Love Confession, but Kaori self-deprecatingly describes herself as a burden. When Shizuku brings up Kanae's next book, and proposes coming back later, Kaori apologizes, saying she won't necessarily be able to come back.

Shizuku takes Kaori to an isolated corner of the aquarium, where Kaori breaks down in tears, saying she doesn't want to die. Shizuku, feeling helpless, cries with her. After Kaori calms down, she confesses that she's scared of death and doesn't want to be a burden to others. Shizuku hugs Kaori, who apologizes for unloading her anguish onto her. Shizuku says there's no need, since she's Kaori's girlfriend. Shizuku talks about how nice Kaori is, but Kaori replies that Shizuku is a kind person at heart.

Shizuku, painfully aware that Kaori doesn't have long left, feels a sense of urgency. As she takes Kaori out of the aquarium to go to her family, she asks to speak with Kaori the following afternoon.

The next day, after Kaori spends the night at home and has tests done in the morning, Shizuku comes to see her in the afternoon. She says she hasn't made any progress on her novel, but is prepared to explain why she reacted so negatively to Kaori's suggestion that she publish a web novel.

Shizuku explains that for the rest of middle school, the school ostracized her for bullying Ruri, which Shizuku felt she deserved. This continued in middle school, a some of Shizuku's schoolmates followed her there, but Shizuku also avoided others out of fear of hurting them. She found solace in books, where she could go to other worlds, but her feelings of happiness also made her feel guilty, which is why she often read dark and tragic works.

Around this time, Shizuku learned about web novels, and decided that anonymously publishing one would be an emotional outlet. She then worked on a novel titled "Girls Lovers Suicide," the same one Kaori read, and posted it online. Initially, the feedback was positive, but it turned critical. Shizuku didn't understand why at first, but later learned that her story resembled an actual suicide incident by coincidence. Shizuku thne began to despair, believing that she could only hurt others.

Shizuku admits that she chose her and Kaori's high school so that as few people as possible would know her there. She then planned on posting the ending to her story, disposing of the manuscript and killing herself... but then Kaori stepped in.

Shizuku apologizes for such a long story, saying she was scared to tell it because of what she did, but Kaori appreciates it, and says that Shizuku can save people.

Shizuku admits that she's having problems writing an ending, partly because "Girls Lovers' Suicide" was an outlet for her emotions, and partly because she doesn't know how to write a happy ending for them. Kaori replies that the ending doesn't have to be happy as long as the characters are content. Shizuku, knowing she doesn't have long left, dedicates herself to writing.

Shizuku then writes about how Kaori tried to cut ties with Shizuku, but Shizuku refused to accept it and took up the pen. She recalls that the Kaori in her story and the real Kaori have always been different, but Kaori liked seeing the versio of herself on the pages, so that's what Shizuku will give her, as a love leter.

Shizuku arrives a bit early, having made progress, and sees Kaori hasn't eaten much lunch. Kaori reads what Shizuku has written, as Shizuku notices how beautiful Kaori is, and enjoys it. Shizuku promises to give Kaori the rest tomorrow, and leaves as Kaori's family arrives.

That evening, Shizuku has just finished the story when she gets a call from Seri, who gave Shizuk her contact information during the trip, informing Shizuku that Kaori's condition has taken a turn for the worse. She learns that Kaori is being operated on, and desperately hopes she will make it to tomorrow.

As the doctor tells Kaori's family that there is a 50-50 chance she won't awaken, Shizuku shuts down, forcing Seri and Ruri to take her home. Shizuku tries to pull herself together and writes the ending, in which her character tell Kaori's character, "Goodbye," but is dissatisfied.

Shizuku goes to the hospital and sees Ruri, who is on her way out. Ruri says today will be the decisive day, but asks Shizuku to take care of herself. Shizuku waits a bit longer and finally sees Kaori wake up. Kaori, who is wearing an oxygen mask, clutches on to Shizuku and begs her to stay. The strain of talking is too much for Kaori, so she and Shizuku text.

Shizuku thanks Kaori for everything and shows Kaori a picture of the morning glories, which have nearly bloomed. Kaori asks to see Shizuku's novel and Shizuku says yes. Kaori takes Shizuku's hand, and Shizuku whispers, "I love you" to Kaori before leaving. Shizuku leaves Kaori for the last time, with both crying.

Shizuku laments her powerlessness, but finishes the novel as promised and sends the last line to Kaori. Late at night, Kaori sends one final message, "Me too." It turns out that Shizuku had changed her character's last line to "I love you," which reveals that Kaori accepted Shizuku's confession

Shizuku wonders how Kaori will react to seeing Shizuku tomorrow... but then Kaori passes away before morning comes.

A few days pass, and school starts again. Shizuku sits on her bed, draped in her blanket. Seri and Ruri go to Shizuku's house and ask Shizuku's mother if they can see her. Shizuku's mother apologizes, saying Shizuku has not left her room or eaten, but Seri barges into Shizuku's room, grabs her by the shirt and demands to know why Shizuku wasn't at Kaori's funeral. Seri then carries Shizuku downstairs and insists that she shower and brush her teeth, since they're going to Kaori's house.

At the Asaka residence, Kaori's father sees Shizuku, Ruri and Seri inside, showing them the family altar and Kaori's picture on it. Shizuku recalls how she came to the hospital after hearing of Kaori's death, but fled after seeing Kaori's body covered by a blanket, unable to face Kaori's death.

Shiori shows Shizuku to Kaori's room and shows her Kaori's diary and a letter from Kaori before seeing herself out. The diary starts when Kaori is in high school, and apart from revealing Kaori's desire to help Shizuku open up to others, states that she admired Shizuku.

Kaori's final letter reveals why Kaori admired Shizuku- Shizuku, who had helped Kaori get a book she was too short to reach and said she looked cuter without glasses, impressed Kaori with her confidence, but Kaori couldn't speak to her before transferring out.

Kaori then reveals that in her last year of middle school, when she despaired as her condition deteriorated and she was hospitalized, she read "Girls Lover's Suicide," and found that it gave her hope. She was hesitant to tell Shizuku, though, lest she become just another fan to her.

Kaori thanks Shizuku for her story, and apologizes for not being there for her. She enjoyed their fake relationship, and while she wanted a real one, she was worried that Shizuku would kill herself after Kaori's death if their relationship had become real. She asks Shizuku to live on and remember her.

Shizuku, overwhelmed by emotions, breaks down sobbing, and promises to always remember Kaori. She returns to school, having cut her bangs short, and greets her classmates, no longer isolating herself from others. She promises to become the proof Kaori was there, wanting to believe that the summer she was there was a happy story.
