  • Big Brother Instinct: Steven acts protective with Belly, his little sister, when young man Jumper hits on her, warning him off as she's still fifteen.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Jeremiah and Belly seeing each other for the first time since the previous summer. She waits for him to see her as he greets her brother and Jere compliments her when he does and runs to hug her.
  • Childhood Friends: Belly and Steven with Jeremiah and Conrad. The flashback montage in the beginning show them together at the summer house from they were little up until the previous summer.
  • Corporal Punishment: Laurel slaps Steven on the head while he drives, after asking her kids to clean up more and be good house guests at Susannah's, because Steven asks if Susannah doesn't have staff to do that.
  • First Kiss: Belly has hers with Cam at the beach party. She dishes to her best friend Taylor about this, delighted that it finally happened.
  • Interclass Friendship: In her narration, Belly mentions that her family doesn't have money, but the Fishers are rich and that Laurel acts weird about it.
  • Jail Bait Taboo: Steven warns off Jumper, a young man who starts hitting on Belly, by informing him that she's fifteen, thus underage. Jumper retreats at once.
  • Jealous Romantic Witness: Belly when she sees Conrad kissing Nicole at the bonfire.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Laurel and Belly's reactions to Conrad being surly, quiet and apathetic. Susannah tells Laurel he thinks it's because of his recent breakup with a girl named Aubrey.
  • Opening Monologue: Belly narrates her relationship with summer at the beach house over a montage of the kids growing up.
  • Patient Childhood Love Interest: Belly has been in love with Conrad since she was 12 (so almost 4 years), and Taylor urges her to go for it this summer, but Belly says he doesn't see her that way.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: Susannah and Laurel have to ban their kids, all teenagers, from using their phones at the dinner table.
  • Photo Montage: The photos of the kids on the bridge in front of the beach house, taken over the years.
  • Rule of Pool: The boys do the traditional "Belly flop" to a fully clothed Belly, who manages to pull Conrad in too by pretending she hurt her foot.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Both Susannah and Jeremiah react like this to Belly, although Conrad seems to notice as well. Susannah tells Belly that she's 'in bloom'.
  • Shout-Out: When Cam approaches Belly at the bonfire, he references the characters in Ecce Romani which they portrayed at Latin Camp in 7th grade. Belly initially misunderstands when Cam mentions Sextus.
  • The Teetotaler: Cam doesn't drink at all, which sets him apart from his fellow teenagers. He doesn't mind being unlike them at all in this. Cam doesn't push it for anyone else either.
  • Time-Compression Montage: The opening sequence of summers in Cousins which Belly narrates.
  • Twirl of Love: When Jeremiah sees Belly, he hugs, lifts and twirls her.
  • Wild Teen Party: The rich kids there for the summer throw a bonfire at the beach. The cops break it up after a drunk Conrad gets into a fight with Jumper for trying to steal his beer.
