Return to Recap: The Smurfs (1981).

Around the time that Papa Smurf laments the passing of age in his life, a young beautiful woodnymph named Flowerbell comes into the village and attracts Papa Smurf's attention to make him fall in love with her and get married — not knowing until later that she was sent by Lord Balthazar to capture the wisest Smurf in exchange for her freedom.

Tropes associated with this episode include

  • All According to Plan: Overheard by the Smurfs from Flowerbell when she succeeds in getting Papa Smurf to marry her so that she can bring him to Lord Balthazar in exchange for her freedom.
  • Becoming the Mask: Flowerbell wanted to manipulate Papa Smurf into falling for her so she could exchange his freedom for hers. However she ended up truly falling in love with Papa and appreciating the Smurfs (especially Smurfette), causing her to turn on Balthazar.
  • Cassandra Truth: The Smurfs overhear Flowerbell saying to herself that getting Papa Smurf to marry her is part of her plan to bring the wisest Smurf to Lord Balthazar and promptly try to warn Papa Smurf not to marry her. Papa Smurf refuses to listen to his little Smurfs' warnings, so the Smurfs resort to trying to sabotage parts of the wedding to dissuade Papa Smurf from marrying Flowerbell, to no avail.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Played with in the episode, as when Papa Smurf bends over to show Brainy and Vanity that being old doesn't mean a loss of health, he hears what he thinks is his back crunching, but in reality is just Greedy chewing on a vegetable within earshot.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Papa Smurf goes from a white beard to a brown beard sometime after he met and fell in love with Flowerbell. It reverts back to white after Flowerbell rescues him and flies away, realizing that he didn't need to look young in order to feel young.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Despite some rare instances in a few previous episodes, this is the first time Clumsy has a rock collection. In one scene, Clumsy collects a pile of rocks and puts them in the water bucket to get clean.
  • Gender Equals Breed: Hinted at in a painting that Painter Smurf creates of Papa Smurf and his prospective bride Flowerbell the woodnymph, with their offspring being male Smurfs. Of course, given how the painting depicted the couple, it was done to dissuade Papa Smurf from marrying Flowerbell, as the other Smurfs knew the whole thing was a setup.
  • Grapes of Luxury: Papa Smurf was pampered by his one-time love Flowerbell who fed him smurfberries in this fashion.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Flowerbell.
  • Hollywood Mid-Life Crisis: Papa Smurf goes through one in this episode.
  • Jumping Out of a Cake: Balthazar does this when Flowerbell gets Papa Smurf alone in the forest with a big giant cake waiting there.
  • Old-Fashioned Rowboat Date: Papa Smurf goes on a rowboat date with Flowerbell the woodnymph, where he sings to her, "You're Only As Old As You Think You Are".
  • Parent with New Paramour
  • Relationship Sabotage: The Smurfs do everything in their power to sabotage the wedding so as to make Papa Smurf have second thoughts about marrying Flowerbell when they discover she was working for Lord Balthazar.
  • Silver Fox: Papa Smurf is seen as this by Flowerbell when she tries to win his heart.
  • Sound-Effect Bleep: A rather harmless G-rated one, but as Papa Smurf is serenading to Flowerbell and singing the line, "When the sky is blue and I'm with you, I hear nature's...," the word "call" is cut off by the sound of the Smurf River Bridge collapsing. ("Nature's call" normally means going to the bathroom, but here in this context it means something else.)
  • The Vamp: Flowerbell, before her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Why Waste a Wedding?: The wedding cake that was meant for Papa Smurf and Flowerbell's wedding is eaten by the Smurfs in the end.
  • You're Just Jealous: Smurfette's response to the other Smurfs when they see Papa Smurf's attention being taken away by Flowerbell.
