Go To

Return to Recap: The Smurfs.

Brainy discovers a magic book in Papa Smurf's laboratory that answers whatever questions are asked. He first lets the other Smurfs make use of it, but after a while he decides to be the only one in control of the book, even setting up a private domicile outside the village where Smurfs could come by appointments and ask the book for its wisdom. Papa Smurf finds out that Brainy has been using the book and tries to stop him and his little Smurfs from doing so, but his efforts are in vain. Later on, the village dam is threatening to break and Papa Smurf must mobilize his little Smurfs to alleviate the building water pressure behind the dam before it does, only for Brainy to halt their efforts by demanding they consult the book first.

Tropes associated with this story include:

  • Battering Ram: Used by the Smurfs to pound open Brainy Smurf's door, until Brainy Smurf opens the door and lets the Smurfs with the ram enter only to crash into a wall.
  • Big Dam Plot: The dam is ready to burst near the latter end of the story, and Papa Smurf struggles to get many Smurfs to help relieve the pressure before it bursts...which unfortunately it does when they waste too much time consulting the book.
  • Blank Book: At first the titular book is that — a book that has nothing but the page numbers on it. However, when a Smurf asks the book a question, the answer instantly appears on the page the Smurf is told to turn to.
  • Brown Bag Mask: Vanity wears a shopping bag over his head when he finds out that the cream that the book gave him the recipe for to give him a great facial complexion had also given him spots.
  • Character Name and the Noun Phrase: The Smurfs and the Book That Tells Everything.
  • Faint in Shock: Papa Smurf gets so frustrated with his little Smurfs being so dependent on the titular book that he stamps his feet in anger and collapses in a faint.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Near the end of the story, Brainy is trapped on a rock in the middle of a flooded river with Baby Smurf and the titular book and he is forced to choose either to save Baby or the book in order to swim across to safety. The book tells Brainy since that it's more important, he should sacrifice Baby. Brainy is disgusted by the book and throws it into the water and swims to safety with Baby.
  • Great Big Book of Everything: The titular book is capable of answering every question and solving every problem, except that it never warns the consulter of the book the consequences of using its solutions.
  • Open Sesame: Brainy eventually puts a spell on the book that would make it respond to only himself saying who he is.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Papa Smurf when he is told by the Smurfs waiting at the old tower to see Brainy that he has to wait in line.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Papa Smurf is given a drink that is laced with a sleeping potion when he is taken to his house after fainting from exhaustion.
  • Throw the Book at Them: Brainy hits some of his fellow Smurfs with the titular book in order to get them away from him.
