Recap / The Smurfs Book 18: Doctor Smurf

Go To

A Smurf decides to become a doctor, but his superficial knowledge of medicine makes his treatments lackluster at best and harmful at worst.

Tropes associated with this story include:

  • Back-Alley Doctor: Doctor Smurf begins as such, though a well-meaning one, who takes great pride in his self-appointed role.
  • Fainting: Smurfette faints from overworking.
  • Homage: "Doctor Smurf" is largely inspired by Jules Romains' well-known and beloved play Dr. Knock. It lampshades the play with a comical footnote and a retake in Smurfing of the play's most popular lines.
  • Hot Drink Cure: Doctor Smurf recommends that Sickly Smurf drink some horehound tea for his "illness" (which doesn't actually exist).
  • Naked People Are Funny: Doctor Smurf has Dopey Smurf undress, but Doctor Smurf gets sidetracked by an argument with Papa Smurf before checking Dopey Smurf, who later reveals he's still naked, to Smurfette's shock.
  • Placebo Effect: Papa Smurf's medicine to Sickly Smurf is actually a placebo for Sickly Smurf's psychosomatic illnesses.
  • Soup Is Medicine: Papa Smurf tells Sickly Smurf to drink some vegetable soup and rest. Played with in that Sickly isn't actually sick, he just thinks he is.
  • Spice Rack Panacea: Doctor Smurf's intended cure for most diseases are herbal potions.
  • Worst Aid: In-universe example of the trope, as Doctor Smurf's less-than-perfect idea of first aid often causes some fairly realistic (if still cartoonish) damage to his patients.
