Papa Smurf sees (and smells) that Baby Smurf is in need of a diaper change, and calls out to his little Smurfs to find one who is brave enough to handle this task. Eventually it falls upon Handy, who then comes up with an idea that would spare Smurfs the humility of having to change a diaper. His new invention is called Diaper Daddy, a robotic nanny Smurf who is capable of changing Baby's diaper and a whole host of other things regarding the careful watch of the infant. Handy's invention goes along pretty well until one day when a fight between two house painter Smurfs results in a paint can being dropped on top of Diaper Daddy's head, causing him to go berserk and run off into the forest with Baby. The Smurfs chase after Diaper Daddy until they reach the Old Tower, where Diaper Daddy protects Baby by firing laser blasts at his targets. Gargamel, who gets in the way of Diaper Daddy, uses this as an opportunity to try capturing Smurfs until Diaper Daddy sets his butt on fire. Handy says that there's an off button in the back of Diaper Daddy's head and tries to communicate that thought to Baby Smurf. However, Grouchy succeeds in reaching the top of the tower where he shuts off Diaper Daddy and then dives down to rescue Baby Smurf after he falls from the top of the tower. The Smurfs are glad that both Grouchy and Baby are safe, but are again tasked with who's going to change Baby's diaper.
This episode has the following tropes:
- Adaptational Wimp: On a certain level, the smurfs in the 80´s cartoon hardly had a problem in changing Baby Smurf´s diapers.Here all of them hide and run and Handy even builds the titular Diaper Daddy just in order to not do it.
- A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Diaper Daddy goes berserk when a paint can hits him on the head.
- The Cameo: Dimwitty does not speak in this episode, but Diaper Daddy tells him to get out of the way (which he does not), causing him to be sent flying in the air.
- The Diaper Change: What kicks off the plot of this episode.
- Gone Horribly Right: Handy built Diaper Daddy to take care of and protect Baby Smurf. All well and good, until an accident causes Diaper Daddy to perceive the rest of the village as a threat and runs off with the baby.
- Got Volunteered: Papa Smurf asks for a volunteer to change Baby Smurf's diaper, prompting everyone to refuse and back away. Papa subsequently orders the first Smurf he sees (Handy) to do it.
- Hypocrite: While out searching, Hefty says Handy could've prevented this whole mess by simply changing one diaper himself, a sentiment that Grouchy agrees with. Handy retorts that he sure doesn't remember either of them volunteering to change the diaper when Papa Smurf first asked for a volunteer.
- Mythology Gag: Diaper Daddy somewhat resembles Clockwork Smurf from the comics and original cartoon.
- Papa Wolf: Grouchy climbs the tower to save Baby Smurf and even dives down to keep him from falling
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Diaper Daddy in berserk mode has red pupils.
