Papa Smurf decides to organize an election that will appoint the Smurfs who will be part of the Special Brigade responsible for defending the village. The chosen ones are Dimwitty, Lazy, Scaredy, Clumsy, and Baby.
This episode has the following tropes:
- Accidental Hero: During the fight with Azrael, Lazy wakes up from the noise and unknowingly makes Azrael hit his face with a stick, but does not notice this and believes they are trying to wake him up.
- Declaration of Protection: Basically the plot of the episode.
- Embarrassing Pyjamas: Gargamel spends the entire episode... in his pajamas.
- I Want My Mommy!: Gargamel says this when he breaks his toe.
- Leap of Faith: Clumsy attempts to make a plan to bring back the captured Smurfs. He ends up falling into the Smurf bag himself. The others believe this was the plan and they follow him inside.
- Mistaken Identity: When Baby burps into a barrel, Scaredy yells "Gargamel!" when he believes it's him. The other Smurfs proceed to scream and runaway.
- Mythology Gag: Gargamel uses freeze balls to catch the Smurfs.
- No Ending: The episode ends with Dimwitty, who has recently saved every Smurf from Gargamel, driving off a cliff, causing the Smurfs to start screaming, but the episode ends abruptly from there.
- Only Sane Man: Azrael occasionally gets himself into this, in contrast to Gargamel.
- Papa Wolf: A minor moment but Hefty throws Baby out of the way before he is captured by Gargamel.
- Team Power Walk: When the five chosen ones do an epic walk in moment, Dimwitty ends up bumping into the others, causing them to fall.
- Tragic Mistake: Averted near the ending, as the chosen ones end up working together and are able to save the Smurfs when Gargamel attacks.
- Training Montage: Smurfette and Hefty train the newly chosen ones.
