Lisa stays home from school because she's running a high temperature. Marge left some books by Lisa's bed, including a gift from Homer, The Illustrated History of Western Art, a thick coffee table book. As Lisa reads the book, she imagines herself and her family as famous artists.

Tropes

  • Art Shift: The Stinger played over the credits has Moe inserted into the paintings of Vincent van Gogh (or Vincent van Moe, as he puts it).
  • Couch Gag: The Simpsons are silhouettes on the couch. Transparencies are added for their skeletons, internal organs, muscles, etc., finishing up with skin and clothes.
  • Food as Bribe: To lure the Emperor of France (Homer) into their exhibition hall, the Expressionists (Bart and friends) hide inside a giant wheel of cheese and roll it while the Emperor chases it and takes bites out of it on the way.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Vincent Van Moe references the lady who shushes everyone in the Gracie Films card at the end of the episode, she's not the boss of him.
  • Off with His Head!: Skinner and Chalmers die at the guillotine in the second segment. Their heads are alive long enough for a brief exchange.
  • The Scream: Moe as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec after he looks in the mirror for the first time in his life. The scream causes the windmill blades at the Moulin Rouge to fall off.
  • Shout-Out: A caption reading "Leonardo di Ninji" while showing off a picture of the 2014 live-action incarnation of the turtle (albeit with purple covering like Donatello) appears when Lisa first opens up the art history book.
  • Sick Episode: Lisa has to miss school due to being sick in bed. Her reading a book on art provides the Framing Device for the episode.
  • Stairway to Heaven: Homer rides an escalator to Heaven after dying in the "Birth of Venus" segment. His weight causes it to drop down towards Hell instead.
