Recap / The Simpsons S 29 E 05 Grampy Can Ya Hear Me

Go To

After getting hearing aids, Grampa finally learns what everyone says about him. Principal Skinner discovers the ultimate secret his mother was keeping from him.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: When Bart and Lisa break into the school to change Lisa's report, he steals Ms. Hoover's nicotine gum. Later, when Ms. Hoover calls Lisa, Lisa confesses to the cheating but Ms. Hoover says she wants her gum back.
  • Call-Back: Once again, Lisa imagines herself (this time with a nightmare) in a future where she's about to become the President until an incident from second grade is held as grounds to disqualify her.
  • Couch Gag: The Simpson family goes through a Progressive Era Montage, from what looks like The Gay '90s (travelling on a boat, arriving in the U.S.) all the way to the far future (travelling in a UFO flying away from Earth, arriving on planet Rigel 7).
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: Lisa has a nightmare where she's about to be elected President, her cheating on a second grade paper is exposed and she's disqualified for it, making a character named Kenny Hitler the new President.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Grampa hears the bad things his family whispers about him right when he's about to tell them about his hearing aids.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Averted. When Abe reveals he heard all the horrible things his family said about them, Homer replies that they didn't mean to say those things, only to immediately say they 'did' mean them.
  • Where the Hell Is Springfield?: In one scene in Miss Hoover’s classroom, the chalkboard reads: “Five states whose capitals start with the same letter as the state: Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Oklahoma, this state.” Those aforementioned four states are the only states whose capitals begin with the same letter.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: In Lisa's dream, it was reported that she had 99% of the vote to become President of the United States, but since she had 72,743,658 votes and Kenny Hitler had 69,658,757, it would be more accurate to say that Lisa had 51% of the vote.
