Recap / The Simpsons S 24 E 7 The Day The Earth Stood Cool

Go To

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein from Portlandia guest star as cool neighbors whom Homer wants to emulate, and Marge and Bart find to be pretentious hipsters whose ilk are overrunning the town.

Tropes:

  • Awesome Mc Cool Name: Homer is impressed by Terence's son, who is named T-rex. He then introduces Maggie, Bart, and Lisa as Ice Cream, Bungee Jump, and Viral Video.
  • Donut Mess with a Cop: Chief Wiggum moved the local police force to find a new donut supplier and threatened to shoot him to force him to make a new batch.
  • Hipster: The cool neighbors. They then had more people join in order to spite Homer and Marge.
    • Deconstructed. When the fire breaks out due to Terrance's compost heap, and the fire fighters cant get to it due their old time horse drawn fire engine losing its horse.
    • Further deconstructed in their son T-rex, who is grouchy and unpleasant due to not getting much sleep from his 'cool' activities, and not only resents a lot of the things he has to do but expresses a desire to be able to watch TV and eat fast food like a normal kid.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: Bart has a disagreement with T-rex when Homer put the effort to make him a jacket with a dinosaur wearing sunglasses and saying "Dino-cool" on the back that T-rex found lame. Bart scolds T-rex for throwing the gift to the trash, but mostly because Bart is only allowed to insult Homer.
Bart: No one bad-mouths my dad except me!
  • Insult Backfire: Homer shares a yard with his new hipster neighbors, with the aim of devastating other neighbor Ned. Ned's actually relieved, instead.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Chief Wiggum once he realized he was threatening to shoot somebody for donuts. He said he knew there was something wrong with him because it was the second time in a day he played that trope. The first time's details have never been discussed.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: By the end of the episode, Lisa is the only one to not have a negative experience with Terence and his family. Marge and Maggie are disturbed by his wife's breastfeeding, and Bart finds his son rude and disrespectful, while Homer gets frustrated after learning that the rest of his family is unhappy. Lisa, however, is impressed by their backyard compost bin and the shows that Terence's son watches. When they drive off, she shouts after them to let her join them.
  • Parental Favoritism: Despite resisting the hipsters' peer pressure to breastfeed, Marge reveals toward the end that she did breastfeed one of her kids: Lisa. The formula-fed Maggie, comparing Lisa to Bart, is clearly horrified by the idea of which way she's heading.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Squick: In-Universe. Marge can't stand breastfeeding and quickly is labeled as weird by the other cool mothers.
  • Status Quo Is God: When Springfield is declared "America's Coolest City" by the New York Times, the hipsters take it as a sign the town is "played out" and decide to leave.
  • Take That!: Marge reads an issue of The Onion. She assumes that The AV Club's negative reviews of The Wizard of Oz and Citizen Kane are also satire, and finds them so mean that they're funny, only to learn that they're real.
  • The Tag: Over the credits is a segment of Mr. Burns, who does not appear elsewhere in the episode, giving a brief lecture on the history of nuclear power.
