Recap / The Shannara Chronicles S 02 E 08 Amberle

Go To

Allanon trains Mareth to become the next Druid, but they are captured by the Crimson. The Warlock Lord raises Catania from the dead on Bandon's request. Wil enters the Ellcrys to speak to Amberle, while Eretria goes to save the Chosen from the Crimson troops that have invaded Arborlon.

  • Back from the Dead: The Warlock Lord brings Catania back... temporarily.
  • Badass Boast:
    • Riga delivers a bold (but, as it turns out, mistaken) one to the Warlock Lord.
Riga: You have no power over me. I am impervious to your magic. And I will not stop until it's purged from this land!
    • The Warlock Lord shoots back with one of his own, and backs it up rather more convincingly than Riga could.
Warlock Lord: You may be impervious to magic, but not to me. (fetters Riga through indirect use of magic) Mortals are always blind to magic's true power. The Four Lands will not be purged of magic. It will be consumed by it. (rips Riga's head off with his bare hands)
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Eretria gets them as the Mord Wraith possesses her.
  • Burn the Witch!: Allanon and Mareth end up tied to a stake with magic-suppressing collars around their necks.
  • Charm Person: Catania is initially her normal self - and understandably not happy about seeing Bandon - but the Warlock Lord then turns the screws further by turning her Brainwashed.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Riga turns out to be completely out of his league against the Warlock Lord. He doesn't even get a swing in.
  • Decapitation Presentation: The Warlock Lord rips Riga's head off with his bare hands and holds it up to Bandon.
  • Demoted to Dragon: Bandon, now that he's brought his master back to life.
  • Evil Counterpart: The Warlock Lord proves to be this to Allanon, something that's further highlighted by the fact that they look the same now. Throughout the episode, they both try to teach a protege to put emotions aside in order to serve a higher purpose, and end up facing off against the Crimson. However, Allanon ultimately turns out to be unable to ignore his own fatherly love for Mareth and gets bested by the Crimson because of it, while the Warlock Lord successfully convinces Bandon to kill Catania all over again and then goes on to defeat the Crimson.
  • Eviler than Thou: After almost a full season, we finally get to see Riga, the magic-hating Big Bad, face off against the Warlock Lord, the magic-using Big Bad. The Warlock Lord proves decisively that he's the eviler of the two— Riga's vaunted magic immunity protects him for all of two seconds before the Warlock Lord gets creative.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: A Crimson soldier tells a female Chosen that she can buy herself another few hours of life by letting him have his way with her. He promptly becomes the first one that Eretria kills.
  • I Have Your Wife: Riga gets Allanon to hand over the Codex by capturing and threatening Mareth.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Wil and Shea both. Part of what Wil needs to do to repair the Sword of Shannara is accept that it's just not in the cards for him.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Amberle does it frequently during her conversation with Wil. It also doubles as her switching back and fourth between her white-robed "spirit of the Ellcrys" form, and one dressed as she was when traveling with Wil.
  • Reforged Blade: When Wil admits that Amberle is never coming back, he looks over to the broken stump of the Sword of Shannara that he was holding and sees that it's regenerated into the complete blade.
  • Villainous Rescue: A Mord Wraith turns up and kills a bunch of Crimson soldiers when they are about to kill Eretria and the Chosen. Subverted a moment later when it possesses Eretria and is implied at the end to have made her kill all the Chosen.
  • Vision Quest: Wil goes on one inside the Ellcrys, in order to make peace with his father, accept his destiny, and let go of Amberle.
