Recap / The Shannara Chronicles S 02 E 02 Wraith

Go To

Wil and Mareth flee the Mord Wraiths and seek out Wil's uncle Flick. Ander goes to the kingdom of Leah to discuss an alliance against the Crimson with Queen Tamlin. Lyria's background is revealed.

  • Altar Diplomacy: Queen Tamlin stipulates that Ander marry her daughter Lyria to seal the alliance between Leah and Arborlon.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Subverted. Bandon admits that Wil was kind to him when no one else was, but he doesn't let that stop him from brutalising Wil to get what he wants.
  • Doppelgänger Spin: Mareth tries to use this tactic to draw away the Mord Wraiths. It apparently partly works, since there were three Wraiths approaching, yet only the Red Wraith ends up confronting Wil and Flick.
  • The Easy Way or the Hard Way: Tamlin offers Eretria the choice of a bag of diamonds if she goes away peacefully and forgets she ever met Lyria, or getting beheaded if she refuses to cooperate.
  • Fingore: Jax slices off the fingers of one of the Rovers with a sweep of his bladed staff.
  • Have You Told Anyone Else?: Edain asks this of Catania when she tells him of Allanon's abduction. She says no, and he stabs her to death immediately.
  • Hidden Depths: Flick was with Shea when he saved the Four Lands from the Warlock Lord, and knows a lot more about - and is a lot more positively inclined towards - magic and Wil's Shannara heritage than he's previously let on. The reason why he claimed otherwise was that he promised Shea to keep Wil away from magic, something that he now sees as no longer possible.
  • High-Dive Escape: Wil and Mareth escape the Mord Wraiths by jumping off a cliff into a lake.
  • I Have Your Wife: Bandon takes Flick captive to ensure Wil's cooperation.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Wil claims to be "just an ordinary guy wanting an ordinary life." Mareth points out that if that were true, he wouldn't still be holding on to the Elfstones.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Wil sarcastically notes that he can see the family resemblance between Mareth and Allanon, in that she's just as negative and judgmental as he is.
  • The Mole: Ander's advisor Edain turns out to be this for the Crimson.
  • No-Sell: The results of Allanon firing his staff at Riga, and of Wil firing the Elfstones at Bandon.
  • Plot Coupon: Evil plot coupons, in this case. The Warlock Lord can be brought Back from the Dead by someone who has his sword, his heart, and his skull. Bandon is two-thirds of the way there already.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Bandon does not harm the Elder Stor, because he's got no quarrel with him. On the other hand, he also notes with no apparent concern that once he brings the Warlock Lord back, "no one will be safe."
  • Rebellious Princess: Lyria turns out to be Queen Tamlin's daughter, and was happy to be rid of her royal position and free to live her own life until Jax dragged her back to Leah.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Wil points out that Allanon learned his magic rather than being born with it, so it shouldn't logically have gotten passed along to his offspring. Mareth shrugs that off by saying that, basically, magic is funny like that.
  • Villainous Rescue: Bandon turns up to save the Elder Stor from the Crimson soldiers who are torturing him.
  • Was It All a Lie?: Eretria bitterly asks Lyria this. Lyria swears that it wasn't, but Eretria is too hurt to believe her.
  • The Worf Effect: Shown repeatedly in this episode.
    • If Jax defeating a bunch of Rovers effortlessly wasn't enough to establish him as a seriously tough customer, him laying Eretria out with a single punch should do the trick. She makes a slightly better showing of herself when they meet the next time, but he still proves able to get the better of her, even when he starts out with her knife at his throat.
    • Riga turns out to be skilled enough to take out Allanon on his own in only a few seconds. True, being immune to magic helps, but Allanon has always been shown to be a great fighter even without magic.
    • Bandon deflects Wil's attacks with the Elfstones almost contemptuously. In this case, however, it's possible that Worf Had the Flu, since Bandon comments that Wil has gotten "rusty."
