Sergeant Gray decides to test all of the rookies by switching their training officers. Nolan is put with Officer Lopez, West with Officer Bradford, and Chen with Officer Bishop. All of them are asked for a special insight to their mentors.
Nolan and Lopez get along swimmingly and make a career-making bust arresting an escaped prisoner, Bradford feels betrayed when West hesitates during a firefight, and Bishop calls Chen to task for sleeping with Nolan. Bradford takes West to a shut-in to try to confront his fears.
In the end, Sergeant West asks what they have learned about their training officers and all of them say nothing.
- Accidental Proposal: Nolan attempts to share his proposal story and Chen assumes he's talking about them.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: A man proposes to his boyfriend after stealing his urine sample to try to save him from a parole violation. The cops are nice enough to let him propose before arresting him.
- Brutal Honesty: Bishop makes it clear to Chen that she thinks she's destroying her career by dating Nolan and keeping it a secret.
- Did Not Think This Through: A man stole his lover's urine test in order to protect him from having a parole violation. This gets them both in trouble.
- Love Cannot Overcome: Nolan breaks up with Chen in order to protect her career from being tainted by their relationship.
- Secret Test of Character: Sergeant Gray clearly wanted all of the rookies to avoid tattling about their training officers. They succeed.
- Ship Sinking: This is the end of the official Nolan/Chan relationship.
- Sink or Swim Mentor: Bradford's style actually proves better suited to West, who needs to be directly handled.
- Tough Love: Bradford takes West to visit an agoraphobic to get a talking to about the importance of facing his fears before they become a habit
