Tropes

  • Asshole Victim:
    • The bully who needlessly antagonized Billy at the bus in the beginning gets (presumably) killed and Billy steals his clothes.
    • Arthur Walsh, Billy's abusive (and heavily implied to be child-molesting) baseball coach, gets murdered by him after one too many taunts.
  • Beneath the Mask: Having had a chance for a shower and to sleep in a bed without being zip-tied to it, 'Rachel' hides underneath it and breaks down crying.
  • Berserk Button: Reminding Billy the Beaut that he no longer has his Mr. Fanservice looks is a good way to get a stick rammed through your chest.
  • Blatant Lies: Madani's boss is rightly skeptical of her claims about what she's doing and not doing about Billy.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Both the bully and Arthur needlessly antagonise a currently non-hostile Billy. The bully is apparently just an idiot, but Walsh's actions could easily be read as deliberate suicide, considering what he said about how much his life sucks, and how he is fully aware that Billy is extremely dangerous.
  • The Bus Came Back: Curtis returns for the first time in Season 2.
  • Coincidental Broadcast: When Frank turns on the TV, WHIH is playing a story on Russo's escape.
  • Compensating for Something: The jerk on the bus wears a T-shirt saying I Have A Big Dick. It's the one item of clothing that Russo doesn't steal from him.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Russo had a hard childhood. Amy's past is also revealed and it is full of dead bodies.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Dr. Dumont takes Billy in despite the fact that he murdered people.
  • Informed Deformity: Billy's scars really don't look as bad as everybody makes them out to be.
  • Internal Reveal: Amy learns who Frank really is.
  • Interservice Rivalry: Madani and Brett Mahoney clearly can't stand each other meddling in their respective affairs.
  • I Was Beaten by a Girl: When Mahoney threatens to report her for shooting him, Madani tells him to go ahead as all his friends in the NYPD will have a good laugh over it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Arthur Walsh, who initially seems like a decent guy turns out to have not changed since his days as an abusive coach at all.
  • Mugged for Disguise: Billy mugs (and possibly kills) the bully who antagonized him in the bus to get a new set of clothes.
  • Never My Fault: Arthur Walsh apparently sees himself as being the victim of the child abuse case against him, going on at some length about how wronged he was by the kids telling people what he did to them.
  • Prefers Rocks to Pillows: Amy prefers to sleep under the bed instead of in it, due to PTSD from having witnessed the aftermath of the massacre of her surrogate family, when she had to hide under the bed from the killer after he returned to the scene of the crime.
  • The Reveal: Turns out Rachel was a part of a criminal teenage gang who did something that upset Pilgrim and his community. Everybody but her were slaughtered. Also, her real name is not Rachel but Amy.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Averted; Frank is reluctant to pursue his Roaring Rampage of Revenge against Billy, despite Madani trying to incite him. Billy decided to forgo his chance for revenge on Arthur Walsh in the past, and might have done so in the present if Walsh hadn't provoked him.
  • Trigger-Happy: Madani is understandably keyed up when going to confront Billy, so she shoots Mahoney when he walks in on her, but fortunately he's wearing a Bulletproof Vest.
  • Ungrateful Bastard:
    • Mahoney says he won't report Madani for shooting him, which could cost Madani her badge, but that doesn't make her any less of a jerk towards him.
    • What Arthur thinks the kids (including Billy) he molested are, after everything he's done for them.
