Castle and Rachel remain on the run, relentlessly pursued by mercenaries. Meanwhile, in New York Madani continues trying to prove that Russo is faking his amnesia.

Tropes

  • After Action Patch Up: As per usual for this series, played for Fan Disservice despite a pretty girl being involved.
  • Blasting It Out of Their Hands: Played fairly realistically as Marlena probably hit Frank's gun completely by accident, and Frank's hand is broken in by the impact.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Frank sees through whatever obvious lie Rachel is trying to sell him.
    • Pilgrim notices Beth not telling him everything she knows about Frank.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Frank scores three in rapid succession when he ambushes some of Pilgrim's enforcers at the motel.
  • Bound and Gagged: Frank does this to Rachel in the motel, having her zip-tied to a bed and then gagged with duct tape when she threatens to scream.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Frank plans an ambush for the people chasing Rachel, laying a lot of groundwork for being able to surprise them from different directions.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    • When Frank gives Rachel a bunch of bloodied cash to pay for a Motel room, she quips "Not suspicious at all".
    • The doctor that the sheriff calls in to patch up Frank and Marlena can't help but snark at everyone in sight as she works.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: Frank says that if Rachel was a man he wouldn't have helped her, and says it's because he's old-fashioned. However Rachel points out his lack of hesitation implies he was just looking for an excuse.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Pilgrim doesn't like profanity.
  • False Innocence Trick: Rachel keeps trying this but neither Frank nor the Sheriff fall for it.
  • Fan Disservice: We get a long look at Jon Bernthal's naked rear end... while Frank is painfully treating a bullet wound there.
  • Good Is Not Nice: It's implied that as well as trying to prove Russo is faking, Madani is also indulging in Evil Gloating about his condition.
  • Heal It with Booze: Frank uses what looks to be scotch as an anaesthetic and antiseptic when getting the ricochet out of his ass and stitching it up.
  • Home Field Advantage: Frank sets up at a motel knowing that the Pilgrim's people will come after him (he's inviting it because he wants revenge for them hurting Beth). His preparations are fairly minimal, for him at least, because he knows that the trained killers he's going after aren't as well equipped as ANVIL was in the previous season. All he does is rent the room behind his own and knock down the wall in the closet so he can ambush his pursuers.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Madani accuses Russo's therapist Krista Dumont of this.
  • Implied Death Threat: Pilgrim reads the Get Well cards in Beth's hospital room, then points out he now knows the names of everyone who's important to her, including her son.
  • I Owe You My Life: Rachel brings this up but Frank just scoffs at the idea that this matters to her, thinking (probably correctly) that she's trying to lull him into letting his guard down so she can escape.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Russo can't remember anything about his criminal deeds and who put him into his current state.
  • Mugshot Montage: With a lingering final shot at Frank.
  • Properly Paranoid: While escorting Frank through booking (fingerprints, mugshot), there's a cop a few feet away with a shotgun trained on Frank. The cop in charge also doesn't buy Rachel's bullshit for one second.
  • One Phone Call: Frank uses his one phone call to call Madani, but she refuses to help.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Amber Rose Revah's British accent slips during the end of her phone call with Frank.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Rachel tries to get away during the gunfight between Frank and Pilgrim's people, but the police catch her.
  • Self-Surgery: Averted; having been shot in the backside, Frank can't do this trope, so has to get Rachel to help. She gets annoyed at the assumption that she knows how to sew him up, but Frank says he doesn't care how pretty her stitches are.
  • Shot in the Ass: Frank suffered from this, which Rachel has to stitch up. Frank mentions that he's been shot quite a few times, but this is the first bullet he's taken in that particular spot.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • A massive shootout in a roadside motel is going to draw an equally massive police response, before anyone has the chance to leave the scene.
    • Hitting someone on the head to knock them out isn't a reliable method, and they may wake up much sooner then you'd expect at a really inconvenient time.
  • Tap on the Head: Frank knocks Marlena out with his gun. It isn't long before she wakes up.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • Marlena doesn't call in Pilgrim after locating Frank because her employer gives her the creeps.
    • Rachel also isn't too happy about Frank's rescue work and plan to ambush the people chasing her.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Frank says the people who attacked him died of "terminal stupidity".
  • The Unreveal: Even though he has to lift his mask to take his pills, Russo only does so partially and turns away from the camera so we don't see the results of what Frank did to him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Rafi calls Madani out for her twice daily visits to and harassment of Russo, saying it's jeopardizing the NYPD's case, Homeland's cover-up, and her career.
    • Madani chews Frank out for calling her asking for another cover-up.
  • Worst Aid: Frank uses scotch as antiseptic, adding sugar to the wound, pretty much guaranteeing an infection.
  • You Wouldn't Shoot Me: Frank gives Rachel a Glock to defend herself, but predicts accurately that she's incapable of shooting him when she tries to force him to let her leave. After she can't even shoot Marlena, he takes the gun back off her.
