Recap / The Proud Family S 2 E 19 Wedding Bell Blues

Go To

When Suga Mama begins dating a man by name of Clarence St. John, Oscar comes to believe the man isn't who he truly says he is.

Tropes:

  • As Himself: Smokey Robinson.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Despite their wonderful romance, Clarence and Suga Mama don't get married after all, if only because Clarence's dementia means it just wouldn't work. Though Suga Mama's a bit heart-broken she had to break it up, Penny cheers her up with the possibility she'll find love again. Sure enough, she gets back together with Papi, much to Papi's chagrin.
  • Domestic Appliance Disaster: Oscar burns the food to ashes and has to take his family plus their friends to Chez Wizards.
  • The Fat Episode: Inverted. Suga Mama gets in shape for the wedding so she can fit into the dress. After it gets called off, she returns to her normal frame after one bite of cake.
  • Growling Gut: Thanks to literally not eating for a week, Suga Mama's stomach roars for food at the end of her wedding.
  • Guess Who I'm Marrying?: Suga Mama and Clarence in the eyes of Oscar, but this is actually a heroic variation as Clarence is a genuinely nice person and he really does care for Suga... along with all the other women he met in his life.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Clarence constantly leaves his home in search of romance. But thanks to Maxwell, his plans are foiled.
  • Hypocrite: Upon learning Clarence is in actuality a wealthy widower, Oscar insists that the marriage must take place, even trying to sweep Clarence's dementia/Alzheimer's under the rug so he can have a wealthy stepfather he spent the entire episode objecting to the presence of.
  • Inspector Javert: Oscar calls in Igloo the mall cop/private eye to dig up dirt on Clarence. His surprisingly thorough investigation points to Clarence being a serial heartbreaker, but Suga Mama refutes it.
  • Nothing Is Funnier: The closest we get to seeing how much money the Prouds owe Chez Wizard's is Oscar's outrageous reply: "I've never seen so many zeros in my life!"
  • Older Than They Look: After Suga Mama loses weight, she transforms into a near identical version of how she looked as a young woman (aside from her white hair).
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When arriving at the wedding to take his father Clarence home, Maxwell is nothing but level-headed and polite, even when Oscar refers to his father as a derelict.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Oscar is the one most vocally against Clarence and Suga Mama's romance, insisting that he isn't who he says he is and is just using Suga Mama for her money. At their wedding Clarence's son appears and confirms that Oscar is right about him on the first count, but wrong on the second as he wasn't using Suga for money, in fact he's the wealthy owner of a successful restaurant chain, even richer than Wizard Kelly himself! He's simply a widower with dementia trying to recapture the romance he had before his wife died.
  • Scatterbrained Senior: Clarence is revealed to be a senile widower who thinks it's 1938 and Roosevelt is still in office.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Compare Suga Mama's appearance at the wedding to her normal appearance. The difference is astounding.
  • Villain Respect: Wizard Kelly knows that Clarence/Roscoe is even richer than him, but doesn't appear to be jealous or petty about him.
