Recap / The Proud Family S 1 E 20 Hip Hop Helicopter

Go To

Penny and her friends gain popularity when they win a dance competition on popular dance show Hip-Hop Helicopter, but their parents take issue with the skimpy outfits they wore for their performance. When the girls are invited to a party for the chance to jumpstart a performing career and are made to wear the same outfits, they are forced to make a choice between fame and modesty.

Tropes:

  • As Himself: Big Boy and Shaun Robinson.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The girls are grounded at the end of the episode for wearing the skimpy stage outfits again, but they don't seem too sad about it.
  • Cool Car: Bethany's Porsche. A quarter of the episode takes place in it, and there's even a gratuitous close-up of the gear shift at one point.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When you’re a much older fan of this show, you'll understand that when the girls mention "the power," they are referring to the heaps of praise and male attention that they consistently get throughout the episode.
  • Expy: The titular show of the episode is one to Soul Train.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: After Zoey talks about how she's still wearing her outfit under her normal clothes after getting grounded, she promptly hangs up her call. Penny, Dijonay and Lacienega all laugh at the end.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much as LaCienega loves getting attention, especially from boys (more than others) she’s pretty disgusted at the fact that the older high school boys who interacted with her don’t even try to get to know her beyond how she looks, not even wanting to ask her what her name was.
  • Fanservice: Deconstructed. The stage outfits the girls wear are considered too skimpy, and Trudy asks Penny not to wear it again, saying she’s too young and shouldn’t try to grow up too fast. Unfortunately, the outfits are what makes the four of them popular and when they get invited to a party, they are forced to wear them to keep it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Oscar, despite expressing it in his own unique (and irritating) way, rightly points out that the girls were way too young to be wearing those outfits on TV.
    • When Bethany disgustingly tells the girls that they should be worried if the older boys don’t pay them attention, Lacienega rightly points out that she and the other girls are only fourteen and that they should not have anything to worry about.
  • Oh, Crap!: Penny and her friends do this on the way home from the party when they find out that they left their clothes in Bethany's car. They do this again when Penny's parents (along with Lacienega's parents) return home and catch them wearing their stage outfits after being forbidden from doing so.
  • Take That!: This episode's message towards people who make underage girls wear skimpy outfits.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Oscar and Felix did this when they "won" against Suga Mama's team. Trudy tells them to knock it off.
  • You Are Grounded!: This happens to the girls at the end of the episode when they're caught wearing the skimpy stage outfits for the party. In addition, Dijonay and LaCienega's parents go the extra mile by destroying their outfits to ensure their daughters never wear them again. Zoey is the only one who doesn't learn a thing and reveals that she's still wearing hers underneath her clothes.
