Go To

Original air date: 12/6/2002

Production code: PPG-501

Keen on Keane: The Professor and Ms. Keane go out on a date set up by the girls. Unfortunately, Ms. Keane and Professor start using the hotline to keep in touch with each other, preventing the Mayor from reaching the girls.

Not So Awesome Blossom: When Blossom loses confidence in herself, believing she is a jinx. After Buttercup defeats Mojo Jojo's robots, she replaces Blossom as the leader while Mojo Jojo comes up with a plan to destroy the girls and the Professor.

Keen on Keane provides examples of:

  • An Aesop: Being in a relationship is fun, but you have to remember your life and responsibilities outside of them.
  • Berserk Button: Don’t insult Valentino, Ms. Keane’s cat. Don't even say that you don’t like cats in her presence.
  • Continuity Nod: The events from Cat Man Do are referenced in this episode. It turns out the experience of being brainwashed by an evil kitty has made the Professor hate cats in general.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Getting Ms. Keane and the Professor into a relationship has unforeseen consequences, like Mrs. Keane abandoning her duties as a teacher, the Professor forgetting to make the girls breakfast and lunch, and their house becoming a big mess. Not to mention, Townsville getting overrun by disasters since the Mayor can no longer call the girls.
  • Idiot Ball: The Mayor shares some of the blame for the episode's problems because he was too polite to interrupt the Professor and Ms. Keane's chats on the hotline.
  • Kids Play Matchmaker: The girls set up the Professor and Ms. Keane and actually succeed.
  • Lies to Children: Ms. Keane uses the classic threat "your face will freeze that way" against Mitch when he is pretending to be disgusted over Valentine’s day. Mitch considers it awesome if that would actually happen.
  • Love Letter: The girls leave one supposedly written by the Professor on Ms. Keane’s doorstep and one supposedly written by Ms. Keane with the professor.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Ms. Keane and the professor get this reaction when the Mayor makes them realize they have been occupying the Powerpuff hotline, preventing the Mayor from calling the girls.
  • Split-Screen Phone Call: Between Ms. Keane, Professor Utonium, and the Mayor.
  • Suck E. Cheese's: Pete’s-A Pizza, where the girls arrange for the Professor and Ms. Keane to meet.
  • Sucky School: Pokey Oaks Kindergarten turns into one of these when Ms. Keane stops bothering to actually teach.
  • Teacher/Parent Romance: Between Professor Utonium and Ms. Keane. The girls actually support it (at first).
  • Trash of the Titans: Happens to the Utonium house when the professor starts dedicating all his time to Ms. Keane.
  • Valentine's Day Episodes: The episode starts on Valentine’s Day.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: In the end, the Professor ends up ending his relationship with Ms. Keane when he finds out she has a cat.

Not So Awesome Blossom provides examples of:

  • Burger Fool: After running away from home, Blossom gets herself a job at a hot dog place.
  • Bound and Gagged: Professor Utonium ends up like this at the climax of the episode.
  • Call-Back: At the beginning of the episode, Blossom is sadly talking to one of her dolls about her mistake. She insists that "it was a good plan." At the end of the episode, Mojo says the same line with a similar tone about the failure of his own convoluted scheme.
  • Deadly Dodging: Buttercup disposes of Mojo’s robot army by tricking them into shooting each other, even though this was entirely coincidental.
  • Expressive Accessory: Blossom's bow droops due to sadness after she thinks she's not worthy of being the leader anymore.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: When Blossom is thinking of a different way to defeat Mojo and save her sisters, the camera rotates from her to Mojo across the metal walkway, which shows a large panel which stretches from before her to underneath Mojo's seat.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Blossom suffers hard from this after her plan to defeat Mojo’s robot army fails.
  • I Have Your Wife: Mojo Jojo's evil plan consists of taking this approach three different times in a row. First, when Blossom runs away from home, he lies to the Professor through a note by saying that he's captured her instead, insisting that he come alone to Mojo's lair without Buttercup or Bubbles if he wants to save her. Second, Mojo calls the hotline and has the Professor (who is now captured and tied up) tell Bubbles and Buttercup that they must come to his lair together in order to save him. Finally, once the girls have arrived and become stuck on the balancing pads, Mojo calls Blossom at her new job to inform her that he's captured her whole family and she must come to the lair at once to rescue them (and also bring him two hot dogs).
  • The Jinx: Blossom believes she has become this after everything she tries keeps failing.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Mojo orders Blossom to bow down and pledge to serve him if she wants to ensure the Professor's safety.
  • Lava Pit: The volcano part of Mojo's volcano-top observatory actually comes into play in this episode. At his command, the floor completely opens up to reveal the boiling hot magma underneath. The Professor is tied up and precariously balanced on a small platform directly above it, with Bubbles and Buttercup's weight keeping him steady on two connected pads. If either of them move from their positions (or if Mojo presses a button), he will fall to his death.
  • Parents in Distress: Professor Utonium, big-time. It's not the first time that Mojo Jojo has captured him, either. Buttercup and Bubbles lampshade this when they get the I Have Your Wife call.
Buttercup: I think we're supposed to go to Mojo's and save the Professor.
    Bubbles: [annoyed] Again?
  • Produce Pelting: While not on a stage, Mojo's windshield gets the brunt of the hot dogs Blossom throws.
  • The Runaway: Blossom runs away from home after feeling she is no good anymore to the team.
  • Running Gag: People complaining that their hot dog doesn't have ketchup or refusing to pay for them.
  • Take a Third Option: With Buttercup and Bubbles unable to move and the helpless Professor's life literally hanging in the balance, Blossom has to choose between two options. Does she swear her allegiance to Mojo in order to keep everyone safe or does she attack him head-on, knowing that her father may fall to his death if she doesn't make it in time? It looks like she will go for the first one, but instead she takes an unexpected third option. The metal walkway in front of her has a large panel that stretches beneath Mojo's seat. She bends as though to bow to him (which he ordered her to do) and then jumps down as hard as she can on her side of the panel, causing the other side to flip up and knock the villain up into the air. The Professor still loses his balance and falls, but Blossom's renewed leadership saves him at the last moment.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: After her plan fails and she can't seem to do anything else right, Blossom seemingly gives up on being a Powerpuff Girl and gets a regular job at a hot dog place instead. When Mojo takes her family hostage, though, she springs into action. By the end of the episode, she's outsmarted the villain and regained her rightful role as the leader.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie: Mojo's whole plan hinges on him knowing that Blossom fits this trope perfectly.
Mojo: First, you will bow down before me! Next, you will pledge your allegiance and devotion to serve me!
Blossom: How do you know I won't lie?
    Mojo: Because you're Blossom.
    Blossom: Shoot!
