Recap / The Powerpuff Girls 2016 S 02 E 04 Splitsville

Go To

Each of the girls are faced with a separate dilemma: Buttercup with a monster dog that multiplies when it gets hit, Blossom with a destructive robot at the library, and Bubbles with helping a farmer cross a river. They each tap into one another's id in accomplishing their goals.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Banned in China: In-Universe. Buttercup's choice for movie night, Bearnado Apocalypse II, was banned in three countries until 1987. Bubbles' choice, Cuddle Bunny's Fun Time Adventure is still banned in three countries.
  • Berserk Button: When Blossom tries to channel her mentor—herself—in solving her problem, Bubbles and Buttercup enter her thoughts as well and begin pestering her on what to do. Blossom gets so fed up she attacks the robot with the same reckless abandon Buttercup usually employs.
  • Fox-Chicken-Grain Puzzle: Bubbles has to help a farmer get his goose, fox and bag of seeds across the river. At first Bubbles was going to fly them across, but the farmer is afraid of being flown by a little girl. Also, the reason the goose and the fox can't be left alone is because the goose will beat up the fox. Things get complicated further when it turns out the goose was keeping obnoxious tourists away from the fox. And then there's the Robber Baron, the starting line-up of the Townsville girls basketball team, Sherlock Holmes, and the Raptor King.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: When Buttercup tells the dog monsters to play dead, they explode offscreen and cover her in rainbow colored goop.
  • Hydra Problem: Every time Buttercup hits the dog monster, it splits in two, until she has dozens of them chasing her. Eventually she finds out that the dogs obey commands like a regular dog, and is able to defeat them by asking them to "play dead".
  • Literal-Minded: Telling the dog monsters to play dead actually causes them to die.
  • Meet My Good Friends Lefty and Righty: Buttercup calls her fists Ruth Bader Punchburg and Amelia Punchhart.
  • Plot Tailored to the Party: The main theme of the episode. However, it is inverted when the girls end up separately mismatching to each other's obstacles. Buttercup ends up dealing with the monster dog with the ability to replicate itself (which Bubbles would have no problem with taming it); Bubbles ends up with a complex situation involving a farmer, his goose, a predator fox, a bag of seeds, etc. (which Blossom would have no problem solving); and Blossom ends up with a robot who can predict her every plan (which Buttercup would just easily take it out by brute force).
