Chapter 53: The New Resistance

Lilly finally reunites with Gustav and her father, with Raine, the Farmers, and some Newtopians in tow. Meanwhile, Andrias sends Bog on a mission to recapture the witches.

Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Mrs. Croaker and Sal had no canonical connection; here, they were part of the same organization mentioned in "Cracking Mrs. Croaker".
Adaptational Expansion: This chapter shows how the Wartwood residents found the tunnels under the Plantar farm, as well as how the Paddocks and Bella joined the resistance.
The Bad Guy Wins: Zig-Zagged. Although Bog's attack on Wartwood fails, King Andrias destroys the town and kills half of the resistance. He has no idea the other half survived, so they can lie low and restore their forces, but he's free to keep building up his own army.
Break Them by Talking: Lilly gives an Armor-Piercing Response to Sasha that Anne hated her now, and that she and Luz wouldn't mind her striking her down for defending Grime. Sasha is basically speechless after hearing that.
Brutal Honesty: Lilly tells Sasha that Anne said that she hated her, and that she and Luz wouldn't mind if Lilly strikes her down. Sasha is hurt real bad by this, as this basically implies she deserves death for betraying her friends and joining Grime.
Death by Adaptation: Mayor Toadstool, Toadie, and Priscilla Paddock lived all the way to the end of Amphibia but in this timeline, they're eradicated after Andrias uses the Newtopia Castle cannon to wipe out Wartwood in an attempt to finish off the resistance. Word of God confirmed that Mire was killed by the blast as well.
Dishing Out Dirt: After having Vincent make spell circles so she can take a picture of the pattern she kept seeing in them, Sasha ends up discovering an earth glyph.
For Want Of A Nail: Due to her guilt over her past actions, Sasha doesn't become The Leader of the Wartwood resistance, instead becoming Lilly's second-in-command. Andrias takes out Wartwood using his cannon, and a few canon members of the resistance are killed.
Heroic Sacrifice: Before the cannon fire killed Priscilla, she threw her daughter Penny out of its range, saving her life.
Innocently Insensitive: Lilly assumes Bella's life is easy as a newt in Newtopia, not aware that she also needs to work hard for her life. After learning about this, Lilly apologized for her assumptions.
Internal Reveal:
- Raine learns that Amara comes from Amphibia.
- Sasha learns about Anne's declaration of hatred to her from Lilly.
Just a Kid: Deconstructed. When Emmanuel learns Sasha's only around 14, he offers her encouragement to learn from her mistakes. However by that time, she ended up in bad terms with her friends, got a nasty scar from Belos's possession, and faced people who wants her dead or worse for bad things she's done in the past that she deeply regrets. Needless to say, the poor young girl shouldn't be going through that much at her age as she now ends up nearly broken.
Killed Off for Real: Toadie, Toadstool, Priscilla, and Mire get killed when Andrias fires the laser cannon at Wartwood.
More Insulting than Intended: Lilly brutally tells Sasha of Anne's declaration of hatred about her, and that Anne and Luz wouldn't care if she strikes Sasha down for defending Grime. As Sasha has reformed herself by this point and suffered much because of Belos' torment (especially after having a Disney Death from Belos' Demonic Possession), this greatly hurts Sasha as Lilly's statement basically confirms her worst fears have come true.
Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Andrias destroys Wartwood with his cannon, which results in the deaths of half the resistance and leaving the other half homeless.
Oh, Crap!:
- Mire is surprised when Grime tells him Barrel's Warhammer can break any armor, figuring out he's going to destroy his helmet.
- Everyone pats themselves on the back when Bog's army retreats...until Grime mentions it's not like him and sees Newtopia Castle in the sky. It doesn't take long for everyone to realize what Andrias plans to do.
The Reveal:
- The cure for Uodeela turned her into a heron-newt hybrid, but removed her ability to speak.
- Bella appears to return Amara's feelings for her.
Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Just as everyone else had to do before, it's Lilly's turn to learn to trust Sasha and Grime in spite of all they've done in the past. It's only when they defend her from Bog and Mire in the Battle of Wartwood that she later puts her faith in them, to the point that she appoints Sasha her lieutenant after becoming the leader of the resistance.
Together in Death: Toadstool is injured in both legs during the battle, preventing him from running out of the cannon's blast. Toadie refuses to abandon the mayor and they die together as a result.
Trash the Set: Wartwood is completely taken off the map after Andrias resorts to using the calamity cannon to end the resistance.
Wham Shot:
- After Bog's retreat, everyone sees Newtopia Castle flying over Wartwood with the cannon charging up.
- Once Sasha takes a picture of Vincent's spell circle, she spots a glyph pattern within the photograph.
You Are in Command Now: With Emmanuel injured, he makes Lilly the Resistance's new leader.
