Chapter 47: Anne-sterminator

Just as Anne and Luz are about to come out to their respective families, the Cloak-Bot makes one last attempt to kill them.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Bittersweet Ending: Luz and Anne eradicate the Earth Cloak-Bot and come out to their parents, who give their approval for their relationship. However, the Boiling Isles Cloak-Bot, despite taking heavy damage, successfully captures four witches for Andrias to study magic from, two of whom are a married husband and wife and one being a child who is locked in the dungeons with Marcy.
  • Chew-Out Fake-Out: Bee seems ready to lay into Luz for kissing Anne at the dance, then it turns out he was just messing with her, to his family's shock and annoyance. Of course, Luz proceeds to go along with it.
  • Coming-Out Story: Luz and Anne, tired of the guilt in keeping their relationship secret from their parents, decide to confess. Unfortunately, Cloak-Bot attacks the Boonchuy house right before they do. Once Cloak-Bot is defeated once and for all, the girls go through with it before going home so they didn't risk losing their nerves.
  • Dope Slap: Oum administers one of these on Bee for messing with Luz.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Luz and Anne witness a glyph giving off smoke and wonder if there's a way to power them on Earth before dismissing it as a fluke.
    • Whichever witches have been kidnapped by Demon Realm Cloak-Bot may play a part in Andrias' conquest.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Cloak-Bot attacks the Boonchuys and the Plantars in the early morning instead of the evening.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Both Camila and Oum berate their daughters for keeping secrets and supposedly continuing to act irresponsible and impulsive. This just causes Luz and Anne to think of the worse-case scenarios that would occur from telling the truth and they run off crying. It takes each girl talking to the other's mother about their insecurities that causes them to see they handled things poorly.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Andrias sets Cloak-Bot to self-destruct as a last-ditch effort to kill Anne, and it fails when Anne uses her Calamity power to send it into the sky before it explodes.
  • Kick the Dog: The Lyft Driver was having a good day when he got caught up in the highway chase between Cloak-Bot and its targets. His attempt to aid the Boonchuys, Nocedas, and Plantars ends with his car being destroyed.
Lyft Driver: And I was having a good day...
  • Large Ham: After being challenged by Mr. Boonchuy in a games of Smash, Luz dramatically said she would do it in honor of dating Anne.
  • Out of Focus: Amara doesn't appear in this chapter, only being mentioned by Luz in the beginning.
  • The Un-Reveal: The identities of the four captured witches are as of yet unrevealed. Only that three of them are adults.
  • Wham Episode: Luz and Anne defeat Cloak-Bot and come out to their parents, who accept the relationship. However, the other Cloak-Bot succeeds in beinging four witches to Andrias, and he has the youngest imprisoned in the basement with Marcy.
