Chapter 43: Hop 'Til You Drop

After a month in quarantine, Luz, Anne, Amara and the Plantars head to the mall and run into trouble.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Explanation: It wasn't mentioned in The Owl House where the Nocedas lived before moving to Gravesfield, Connecticut but here they originated from LA.
  • Call-Back: Amara confirms that what Lilly said about her parents making her go along with an Arranged Marriage with a wealthy bachelor in "Elixirs and Potions" is true.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: To keep Gabby from finding out that she and Luz are dating, Anne gets her to start talking shop on all the gossip she has. Once the two hear about Hop Pop diving into the fountain, they leave Gabby without answering her question.
  • Coming-Out Story: Amara comes out as a lesbian to Luz, but admits she's known this about herself for some time.
  • Continuity Nod: Luz recalls when Amara showed her the Newtopia market in "True Colors: Part 1".
  • Crush Blush: Amara briefly has one before confessing to Luz that she likes Bella now.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Manny died when Luz was 10 years instead of as a young girl, and Camila rejected the reccomendation to move to Gravesfield to help him.
    • Andrias waits one month before sending Cloak-Bot to Earth to eliminate Anne, and it attacks her at the mall. Meanwhile, Polly passes her challenge in being human but Sprig and Hop Pop's challenges are forgotten after the group has lunch.
    • Anne naturally wakes up from her burn out, instead of from the Plantars making her smell Durians.
  • Genre Savvy: Unlike the Plantars who spent the last month on Earth binge-watching "Primthistle Manor", Amara has been researching Earth culture and has become quite knowledgeable in several things such as pensions. She also informs the Planters of how the newts kept their tax money for themselves without using it to improve the frogs' towns.
  • The Ghost:
    • Yunan and Bella are both mentioned by Amara, who admits to Luz that she has feelings for the latter.
    • Sheresade is mentioned and seen on the torn portrait but not named by Andrias when he declares it's time to finish what his former fiance had started in doing recon on the Boiling Isles.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Even when the Nocedas didn't move to Gravesfield, Manny perished.
    • Luz starts to develop the same self-doubt issues as she did in Season 3.
  • Internal Reveal: Andrias gets official confirmation that Luz had lost her Calamity powers.
  • The Load: Between losing her powers and having to be saved by Anne three times now, Luz starts to feel like she's burdening Anne and the Amphibians because she can't properly contribute to fighting against their enemies.
  • Luminescent Blush:
    • Now that she and Anne are dating, Luz has several of these when around her.
    • Anne blushes when she first sees Luz's new outfit.
    • Amara's Crush Blush regarding her feelings for Bella are also worth mentioning.
  • Meaningful Gift: Anne buys Luz a necklace comprised of a purple gem shaped like a heart: it serves as both a gift to her girlfriend and symbolizes Luz's Calamity powers.
  • Pragmatic Adaptation: This chapter combines the canon "Hop 'Til You Drop" with the rest of "The New Normal".
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Luz uses these attempting to convince Camila to let her and Amara go to the mall, but Camila resists.
  • Queer Colors: The shirt Amara chooses for Luz's new attire carries the stripes and colors of the bisexual pride flag, which is ironic considering Luz is technically still in the closet.
  • The Reveal:
    • Luz will have to keep her cast on for two more weeks (one by the chapter's end).
    • Amara admits to Luz that she has a crush on Bella.
    • Gabby reveals that Jesse Bliss wrote a blog post saying Luz and Anne ran away after their parents supposedly "refused both of them coming out" and Sasha and Marcy joined them to help them survive.
    • The Lyft Driver has four jobs in total, as he appears working in a toy store in the Santa Anita Mall.
  • Sequel Hook: Andrias sends a second Cloak-Bot to the Boiling Isles to find and capture witches in order to study how they use magic.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: Anne now has her Season 3 Earth attire and the Planters have their human disguises. On the other hand;
    • To pass Amara off as human, Luz gives her a green coat, blue t-shirt with a sun icon, baggy brown pants, and sunglasses all paired with Amara's usual boots as a disguise.
    • To impress Anne, Amara creates a new outfit for Luz: a striped shirt in the colors of the bi pride flag under a jean jacket, jean shorts, red sneakers and a small blue backpack.
  • Sweetheart Sipping: Luz and Anne share a a cup of boba tea while on their first date.
  • Take That!: The Lyft Driver's statement about the Cosmic Wars reboot is a jab at the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Averted. Andrias considers having a witch take Marcy's place as the Core's host body but rejects it, which doubles as a future Kick the Dog moment.
  • Time Skip: A month has passed since the main characters came to Earth in the last chapter.
