Chapter 40.2: True Colors (Part Two)

After foiling the Toad rebellion, everyone takes time to recuperate while Luz recovers, and they're met with a big surprise.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Explanation: It was never revealed what became of Aldo before Amphibia ended. Here, he's shown to have died when King Andrias blows up the North Tower.
  • Adaptational Context Change: In the show, Anne says that three of them (her, Sasha and Marcy) may have made some mistakes. Here, Luz says that Marcy may have made a mistake, meaning that Anne and Luz don't feel like they made a mistake not listening to Sasha’s warning.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: The Calamity Guardian is said to be male here, as the Collector refers to them as their brother.
  • Almost Kiss: As Anne confesses to Luz that she's made up her mind about them dating, she decides to kiss her as her answer...cue Lady Olivia bursting through the door.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Anne has a few moments that stem from her concern for Luz;
    • She's so furious with Sasha over her actions, she suggests leaving her in Amphibia to face execution for them since she allowed the fight between Luz and Beatrix to happen.
    • Later when she learns that Luz intentionally fought Beatrix to keep her from joining the invasion, she lays into Luz for putting herself in danger.
  • Big Damn Kiss: Downplayed. Anne, to show she's accepted her feelings for Luz, kisses her on the cheek while she's laid up and unconscious in the hospital.
  • Big Damn Reunion: Uodeela's apprentices reunite when Lilly, Gustav and Amara are the first to see Luz when everyone visits her at the hospital.
  • Bound and Gagged: Per Andrias' orders and Anne's request respectively, Yunan brings Sasha to the throne room in chains and her mouth gagged so she doesn't cause anymore trouble. Unfortunately, this stops her from warning everyone about Andrias lying to them.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: By chapter's end, Uodeela's apprentices are separated once more; Gustav leaves to regroup with the rebellion and ends up not witnessing King Andrias revealing his intent to conquer, Lilly helps Sasha and Grime fight off Andrias while Marcy opens the portal to Earth, and Amara (despite some initial hesitance) gets sent to Earth with Luz, Anne, the Plantars and Frobo's deactivated severed head.
  • Call-Back:
    • Luz remembers when Marcy brought up the hypothetical scenario of traveling to another world in "Birthday Box" after hearing she got the girls sent to Amphibia on purpose.
    • Upon the sight of Marcy getting stabbed, Luz remembers the prophecy Maddie recited to them and Anne in "Maddie, Marcy and Luz".
  • Commonality Connection: Luz knows the feeling of being alone all too well, and that's why she ends up sympathizing with Marcy after she admits she Hates Being Alone and didn't want to lose her friends because she was moving.
  • Crush Blush: After Lady Olivia ruins their moment, Luz and Anne blush each time they remember what they nearly did.
  • Death by Adaptation: Aldo is blown up in North Tower by King Andrias destroying it using the Calamity cannon.
  • Dirty Coward:
    • As Gustav puts it, for all of Beatrix's talk about wanting to face a strong opponent she escaped when she got it due to the risk of being arrested.
    • Amara's parents Odalys and Alister hid away in a panic room while the toads ransacked the city along with their home. Their butler is also one after running away during the chaos.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Anne is so angry at Sasha for seemingly trying to kill Luz that she suggests leaving her in Amphibia and telling her parents she's dead; she even brings up the possibility of having her executed. Everyone in the room, including Marcy, Hop Pop and Sprig (who admits he doesn't like Sasha), is shocked to hear Anne said that and dissuade her not to hurt Sasha out of anger.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Due to the importance she has in the future, Beatrix needed to escape from Newtopia.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Andrias holds off on taking possession of the Calamity Box until Luz wakes up.
    • As a result of Luz's condition, Marcy decided to call off her deal with Andrias.
    • Anne requests that Sasha be gagged due to not wanting to hear her excuses, which prevents her from warning everyone about Andrias even more. Her not untying Sasha's hands immediately (Luz having to do it mid-battle) also means Sasha isn't able to be as active in fighting off Andrias' forces in the throne room.
    • Grime is not present when King Andrias reveals his true nature to everyone in the throne room.
  • The Ghost: Amara brings up Raine and (indirectly) Eda, whose curse and elixir is used as a basis for curing Uodeela.
  • Group Hug: After hearing Amara say she was glad to put everyone up at the Hemisphere Hotel and accept her parents' punishment, the Plantars pull her into a hug which she embraces after a brief moment of hesitation.
  • Holding Hands: To show they've finally accepted each other's feelings, Luz and Anne hold hands from the time they enter the castle up to when Marcy points it out after her secret's revealed.
  • Hypocrite: For all his talk about protecting humanity, Belos chooses to just ignore the threat Andrias' invasion poses to Earth, putting his agenda of killing off witchkind first.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Marcy's friends still discover her Dark Secret in the worst way possible: Andrias cruelly admitting it.
    • Anne taps into the Calamity energy still within her after Andrias drops Sprig (and Luz) out the window to their deaths, gaining her powers and using them to curb-stomp Andrias in a fight.
    • The heroes lose against King Andrias, Anne and the Plantars (with Luz and Amara in tow) are sent to Earth, and Marcy gets fatally stabbed.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Amara reveals to Marcy that she told Luz about their deal with Andrias.
    • In response to learning that Marcy got them stranded on purpose, Luz tells her (and everyone else present) about her late father, and how it affected her and Camila.
    • Belos learns about the Guardian and how he made the Calamity Gems from the Collector.
  • Karma Houdini: Beatrix managed to escape arrest by using a rhinoceros beetle she kept hidden at the Arena along with most of her squad.
  • Leave the Two Lovebirds Alone: As Anne bawls and hugs Luz, Sprig ushers everyone out of the room to give them some time alone, winking at Luz to indicate what he's doing.
  • Missed the Call: Gustav leaves Newtopia to go meet up with his father and Emmanuel. As a result, he misses out on Andrias' betrayal.
  • Moment Killer: Lady Olivia in a massive way. She just bursts into Luz's hospital room right as she and Anne are about to kiss to tell them King Andrias is expecting them, obliviously leaving the girls incredibly embarrassed.
  • Motor Mouth: Sasha gives off a rapid-fire apology to Luz for nearly getting her killed.
Sasha: (loudly and fast) Luz I'm sorry! When I set up the fight with Beatrix I thought you still had those awesome anime powers! I thought you'd at least have a good chance! When I realized you didn't have those powers anymore I changed the plan! I didn't want you to fight her! I tried to keep you safe! Please understand I'm sorry!
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: While Sasha was in the throne room, Grime escapes from his cell.
  • Rejected Apology: Averted. Luz doesn't reject Sasha's apology to her for the fight with Beatrix happening but Luz doesn't accept it either, especially since they're in the middle of fighting Andrias' frobots at the moment. Luz makes it clear to Sasha they will be talking about what she did later.
  • The Reveal:
    • Gustav went through a growth spurt, complete with his voice changing, during his time spying on Grime and Sasha.
    • Amara learned about Eda's curse from Raine and they gave her the ingredients for Eda's elixir in hopes of making it for Uodeela to cure her.
    • Belos' reason for having Luz sent to the Demon Realm was to ensure that he learns the light, wind and water glyphs.
    • The Collector is the Guardian's brother, and the Guardian helped the Titan seal the Collector away in the In Between Realm.
  • Sadistic Choice: Andrias presents Anne with one: save either Luz or Sprig from falling to their deaths at his hands and allow the other to die. When Anne refuses to choose between either of her best friends, he drops them both.
  • Season Finale: Of "Arc 4: Gem Journey".
  • Sequel Hook: Similar to the original episode, the chapter ends with Anne and Luz returning to the human world with the Plantars and Amara. Sasha and Marcy are left behind along with Gustav and Lilly, the latter fatally wounded by Andrias. The Calamity Box is Andrias' possession, and he is ready to carry out his plans to take over all worlds.
  • Shout-Out: Andrias threatening to drop Luz or Sprig out the window and forcing Anne to choose who to save has some resemblance to the climax of Spider-Man: the villain (Andrias/Green Goblin) forces the hero (Anne/Spidey) to choose between saving either the one they love (Luz/Mary Jane) or a child (Sprig/the kids in the cable car) from an impending fall and drops both for good measure.
  • Speak in Unison: Luz and Anne both shout "WE WEREN'T DOING ANYTHING!" when Olivia ruins their moment and questions why they look so surprised.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Witnessing Anne get her Calamity powers, Sasha remarks that Andrias is in for what she received from Luz back at Tadpole Pond.
  • Twice Shy: As the group walks into the palace, Anne and Luz looked at each other but didn't know what to say, only to turn away blushing.
  • Wham Episode: Anne finally decides to date Luz, Andrias reveals his plans to invade Earth, everyone learns Marcy's real reason for not wanting to go back to Earth, Anne gains her Calamity powers, Luz, Anne, the Plantars and Amara are sent to Earth while Marcy is injured by Andrias, and Belos realizes that although he needs Luz for the Stable Time Loop, it's not time for her to come to the Demon Realm yet.
  • Wham Shot: Anne tells the unconscious Luz she's made up her mind about them dating...and proceeds to kiss her on the cheek.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After Luz heard Marcy's confession, she told Marcy (and everyone else in the room) that her father died at a young age, leaving her and her mom. She then scolded Marcy for thinking that she was serious about going to another world when she's not thinking straight, leaving her mom alone in the process.
  • Worth It: Amara doesn't care that she has to work as her parents' butler to pay back the money she spent putting up her friends at the Hemisphere Hotel: she wanted to do it so they could be close to the hospital when Luz wakes up.
  • Would Hurt a Child: King Andrias has his canon moments of trying to crush Polly, drop Sprig out of the palace and stabbing Marcy; on top of those, he drops Luz with Sprig and has no qualms hurting Lilly while she fights him so the others can escape through the portal to Earth.
