- Alternate Timeline: This story takes place in the created at the end of "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow", which is ultimately negated in "The Road Not Taken".
- Broad Strokes: As "The Road Not Taken" had hinted, "Digressions" shows that, despite the change in history resulting in vital crew members not having joined the Orville, the main events of the series up to the Kaylon attack happened much as they did in the original timeline.
- Doomed by Canon: Captain Griffith and his First Officer, who command the Orville in Ed and Kelly's stead and were both established by "The Road Not Taken" as having been killed in the Kaylon attack. The First Officer, who went unnamed, is revealed here as being none other than former Chief Engineer Steve Newton.
