Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Jim is clearing the air to the cameras about lying to Pam:
Jim: And when she gets her body back and her confidence back… yes, I will tell her the truth. That I had feelings for a co-worker today that I haven’t had in years. [Beat] But in my defense, he was grabbing my crotch fairly aggressively at the time.
  • Brutal Honesty: Dwight is the only person at the office who's completely blase about how unattractive he thinks Pam looks as a pregnant woman, which Pam actually finds herself appreciating because of how weird it is everyone else is flattering her with overly sincere compliments.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: The entire episode happens because Pam is trying to get Jim to admit that he thinks her replacement temp Cathy Simms is attractive, something Jim refuses to say to his nine-months pregnant wife.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Dwight reports that Jim had a hypertension level on every question asked of him, including his name. He then demands to know who Jim really is. Even after Pam realizes that Jim has high blood pressure and they begin to leave, Dwight calls out "Doesn’t it worry you in the slightest that Jim is not his real name?"
  • Groin Attack: Dwight decides to check to see if Jim has an erection from talking to Cathy... by pretending to stumble and grab right at Jim's crotch.
  • Mood Whiplash: The last scene of the episode goes from comical to serious when Dwight reveals that Jim scored a high number on the blood pressure monitor for every question he answered, even his name. Pam realizes that Jim must have high blood pressure like his father, and drops the matter of his being attracted to Cathy entirely having become far more concerned for his health.
