Recap / The Office USS 8 E 21 Angry Andy

Go To

Andy finds out he has been replaced by Nellie in the workplace when he comes back from Florida with Erin and lapses back his pre-anger management rage.

Meanwhile, Kelly and Ryan break up, and Pam sets her with Ravi, her new pediatrician. Jealous, Ryan looks for a way to get Kelly back.

Tropes

  • Brick Joke: Ryan tries to woo Kelly with a poem he refuses to read due to being too profound. Pam and Jim read it at the end and cry because it really is good.
  • Call-Back: Pam mentions that she has already told Ryan that he is not a good person and that she dislikes him. She had already, back when they were Michael's only employees.
  • Continuity Nod: A lot of Andy's plotline elements in this episode call back to his time in anger management and his early wrathful personality. He even punches the exact same wall as before.
Darryl: He does not like that wall.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Andy left town for several days with no notice (and lied about where he was during that time) and, upon returning, is shocked to discover that he was replaced during his absence and demoted back to sales. Truth be told, he was lucky that they offered him his old sales job back instead of just firing him outright.
  • The Gentleman or the Scoundrel: Kelly finds herself having to choose between the Gentleman Ravi, a lovable and sweet pediatrician, and the Scoundrel Ryan, her toxic ex that wants her because of jealousy. Kelly mentions that Ravi makes her incredibly happy, but Ryan puts her through so much drama, so she needs to decide what's more important to her.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Andy had trouble "performing" with Erin.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Played for laughs in the Cold Open. Jim makes a bet that he will buy hot chocolate for everyone if Phyllis says a complete list of phrases she always says on rainy days before noon hits. Throughout the day, everyone converses with her to bait her into saying these things, but when it comes down to the last one ("This weather makes me want to stay at home curled up with a good book") it hits noon with everyone failing to get her to say it. Then in the Confession Cam...
Phyllis: I mean normally, the rain would make me want to stay home curled up with a good book, but everybody’s being so nice to me today. I’m really happy being here.
  • Status Quo Is God: Zigzagged. Ryan is back together with Kelly at the end of the episode, but Andy is demoted to salesman and then ultimately fired, and Nellie is the new manager.
  • Too Much Information: When Andy's bedroom problem finds its way into the meeting room, several co-workers share their own tips and experiences.
