Recap / The Office USS 5 E 7 Customer Survey

Go To

Dwight and Jim receive shockingly bad customer feedback reports and go to investigate. They discover that their customers actually gave them great reviews and that Kelly tampered with the reports because they didn’t go to a viewing party she had for America's Got Talent. Meanwhile, Andy searches for a wedding venue but Angela’s standards make it difficult.

Tropes

  • Crocodile Tears: Kelly is usually good at them, but this time, the idea that she and Michael are tricking Jim and Dwight into thinking she is being punished is so funny to her that the two just burst out laughing a few seconds in. Jim and Dwight notice this.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Everyone treats Dwight's claims of being sabotaged as his usual delusions. However, it turns out he's right: Kelly sabotaged his and Jim's reviews as revenge for not attending her party.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Kelly tampers with Jim and Dwight’s customer feedback reports, putting their bonuses at risk, all because they didn’t go to a viewing party at her place.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: After the truth comes out, Michael tells Dwight that even if Kelly did tamper with the reports, he still has problems dealing with people, as evidenced by his suggestion to call security on her.
  • Karma Houdini: A particularly appalling instance as Kelly suffers no consequences for her sabotage. Instead, Michael empathizes with her frustration over people not coming over to hang out.
  • Lost in Character: The "Bill Buttlicker" bit goes on long enough for both Dwight and Michael to begin treating the scenario as if they really were making a sale, resulting in Michael seriously considering firing Dwight in exchange for a million dollars while Dwight begs him not to.
    Michael:...It's a million dollar sale.
  • Noodle Incident: Kelly isn't allowed to say "I was raped" and expect all her problems to go away. Not again.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Pam and Jim's conversations with each other through their hidden Bluetooth lead to this with Dwight (although Dwight assumed Jim was talking to himself on a few occasions).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Two examples.
    • While no one bats an eye at Dwight receiving negative feedback from customers, the fact that Jim also received poor scores suggests that something is up with the reports.
    • After Dwight harasses Kelly about the reports, Jim apologizes on his behalf and Kelly has a brief conversation with him before leaving. However, Pam points out that Jim has never had a conversation with Kelly where "she didn't go on for 15 minutes without taking a breath" and he realizes something's wrong.
  • Overly Narrow Superlative: Invoked by Angela for her wedding venue, as she tries to lead Andy to pick Schrute Farms.
