Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 2 E 17 You Saved My Life

Go To

Felix takes his concern with the window washing way too far and nearly falls to his death, only being rescued by the lucky appearance of Oscar. Petrified and grateful, Felix vows to make it up to Oscar. However, his constant attempts to express his thankfulness quickly start driving his roommate insane.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Aside Glance: Felix glances at the camera when Oscar draws a mustache on him with a marker.
  • Canon Discontinuity: Felix comments that he's "never considered the possibility of Felix Unger dying", yet the earlier episode "A Grave for Felix" was about Felix losing a grave plot he'd been trying to buy.
  • Delayed Reaction: Oscar wanders by while Felix is hanging out the window and whimpering and casually asks him what he's trying to do, seeming oblivious to the danger. A second later, realization hits.
  • Implied Death Threat: At the end, Felix philosophically muses about people's obliviousness to their own eventual death, commenting that he's never thought about himself dying. Oscar answers that he has.
  • Intimidating Revenue Service: Felix tries to get Oscar a lower alimony payment. Unfortunately, this involves the IRS going over his books, so Oscar is more horrified than delighted.
  • I Owe You My Life: Oscar saves Felix from falling eleven-or-so stories to his death. Felix spends the rest of the episode thanking Oscar for it, much to Oscar's increasing annoyance.
  • Jumping on a Grenade: While trying to orchestrate a situation that would allow Felix to "save" him and cancel out the debt, Oscar fakes an argument with someone and tosses a dud grenade on the couch. Felix jumps on it, but soon realizes it's a fake. Oscar points out that Felix didn't know that and he could very well have saved him if it had been a real grenade, but Felix still insists it doesn't count.
  • My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: Felix claims this happened while he was hanging out the window. Among other things, he remembered where he lost his skate key during his childhood.
  • Security Cling: Felix clings hysterically to Oscar while being carried to the couch — understandable, given that moments before, his grip on Oscar (and vice versa) helped keep him from tumbling to the street.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Felix's concern with the sloppy job the window washers did makes him decide to sit on the windowsill and clean the smudges himself. He doesn't actually die as a result, but only thanks to Oscar wandering by at the right moment and noticing his roommate hanging out the window.
